Vietnam veteran looks back on 40 years with Honor Flight trip

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
As Town of Jackson resident Dennis Jeske recalls his recent day trip to Washington, D.C., it is hard for him to not get a bit choked up. As one of the participants on the first ever Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight for Wisconsin Vietnam veterans, Jeske said the trip was the experience of a lifetime. I was overwhelmed and so impressed, he said. I am so grateful to everyone who put this together. Jeske said his daywhich included a walk along the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, a stop at the Lincoln Memorial, lunch at the Smithsonian and a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery where the group witnessed the Changing of the Guardwas one he will never forget. The whole thing was so moving, said Jeske. I just cant say enough about it. Jeske was one of 114 individuals randomly selected out of 525 applications for this one time-only trip for Vietnam veterans. The Aug. 3 event was organized by Appleton-based Old Glory Honor Flight, which has arranged numerous trips for World War II veterans, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the end of hostilities in Vietnam. The hero treatment, said Jeske, began from the moment he and the other veterans arrived at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, where the annual EAA AirVenture aviation celebration was taking place. Even at 5 a.m., there was a small group greeting uspolice officers, volunteers, people from the airport, he said. That was really nice. After a greeting from Medal of Honor recipient and Vietnam veteran Gary Wetzel of Oak Creek, the playing of Taps and a prayer, the men departed on their early morning American Airlines flight. Their first stop, at The Wall, put Jeske in a place of solemn reflection as he watched his fellow veterans search for the names of friends they had lost in the war. I was relieved I didnt see anyone I knew (on The Wall), but I had great respect for the men who did (find familiar names), he said. The day of remembrance brought full circle a journey that began for Jeske in 1966. Drafted into the Army and then subsequently selected by the Marine Corps at the age of 21, Jeske was working at A.O.Smitha job he

ended up holding for 42 yearswhen his country called him for duty. I was surprised and shocked, he said. I just looked at it like, When the time comes that they need me, theyll call me. Jeske spent the next year on a whirlwind, completing a very rough boot camp in San Diego, going through various forms of training, coming home to get married and spending a summer with an artillery group in North Carolina. In January 1967 he shipped out to Okinawa and remained there for six months.

Dear Dr. Winter, I was wondering if most people are happy with their dentures? Do they eat well? I have 6 veneers that have failed. After they were installed I couldn't eat or speak properly and my back teeth didn't touch any more! Then the dentist ground on 22 other teeth to make them fit and my bite is off and I am miserable. I would like to have all my teeth pulled and have dentures! How much does this cost and will I be happy? Dear Janet, I am sorry you are having problems. From your question, I am not sure I fully understand what you are going through. You may have a bite problem, a skeletal problem or a cosmetic issue or a combination of the above. First, you should realize that If you can keep your teeth you will chew more efficiently, eat better, extract better nutrition from your food and be happier in the long run. People that have had dentures for 5 years typically chew with one fifth the biting force of people that have their natural teeth. Second, dentures don't work like teeth. They are big pieces of acrylic with denture teeth. They block the roof of your mouth from taste sensations and they can dislodge with sneezing, yawning or chewing. Over time they will contribute to further deterioration of the underlying bone through movement of the dentures and friction. So if your situation can be identified, and fixed, that is what you should do. It is very easy to think that pulling teeth and getting dentures will be a solution but in reality they render you a dental cripple with a prosthesis that must be relined or remade every 3-5 years as your gum tissues change. Then if you want to replace these dentures with implant retained dentures or bridges it can be a long and expensive course of treatment compared to saving your natural teeth. So your dentist should evaluate your bite and cosmetics from before your veneers were done and try and recreate the situation where you were comfortable and happy. We would be happy to see you for a second opinion. Dear Dr. Winter, My wife just had grafting to her gums because they were receding. Her dentist says she now needs to have braces to prevent the recession from coming back. Is this common practice? It seems a bit illogical, as her teeth are pretty straight. Thanks. Dear Neal, grafting for root recession is a

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

common practice in dentistry. The reason for the recession was probably discussed with your wife prior to the surgery. If the positioning of the teeth contributed to this recession than an overall plan to prevent the recession from returning-ie: braces- was probably discussed. Certainly your wife can always say no to the braces but if the dentist feels this is necessary to prevent a recurrence it seems wise to consider this option. It is also possible that judicious reshaping or recontouring of the teeth could decrease forces that may have accelerated the recession. You should ask the dentist if occlusal equilibration or adjustment could be an option to braces. We are happy to see our readers for a comprehensive examination or second opinion visit. Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit. Green is the new pink and blue

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) is pleased to announce Baby Safety Month 2013 Green is the New Pink and Blue! Green programs have been in effect for years but it wasnt until 2002, when the Go Green Initiative started, that the greater population started taking a closer look at the chemicals used in common household products, as well as taking steps to reduce carbon footprints. This has spawned an entire industry of green and sustainable baby products that only continues to grow. Parents are now looking for information on how to buy, where to buy, and what to buy in order to raise a healthy family and stick to eco-friendly practices and products. Always at the forefront of the juvenile products industry, this years Baby Safety Month theme reflects JPMAs commitment to safe products and industry developments. Green is the New Pink and Blue focuses on: what parents need to know about chemicals in baby products (facts vs myths) green initiatives manufacturers are undertaking safety concerns with second hand products product recycling programs /how to properly discard products "Raising children takes care and on going education to ensure the first years are happy and healthy," remarked Julie Vallese, Managing Director of Government and Public Affairs for JPMA. "Its important to know how to properly use any juvenile product, new or used, including following product instructions trusting your instincts and using common sense when caring for baby at all times." A comprehensive online guide for green parenting is coming soon via www.jpma.org. About Baby Safety Month Baby Safety Month started in 1983 when JPMA initiated "Expectant Mothers Day." In 1986, it was extended to a week long celebration, until 1991, when JPMA sponsored the first "Baby Safety Awareness Month." Since then, every September has been designated as Baby Safety Month.

Industry group enhances certification program

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association(JPMA), a non-profit association dedicated to promoting the industry and the safe selection and use of juvenile products, announced enhancements to its ongoing and industry-leading Certification Program. "JPMA Certification guarantees the product youre investing in meets the highest government, industry and retailer standards," said Michael Dwyer, CAE, executive director of JPMA. "Consumers should look for the JPMA Certified seal when purchasing products for their children." The JPMA Certification Program was initiated in 1976 with a program for high chairs and has grown to cover 23 product categories. The program has always, and continues to be verification that a product sample has been laboratory tested and meets the ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials) and mandatory government testing requirements. JPMA has enhanced the certification program by now also requiring State, Retailer, and CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) testing requirements culminating in the most comprehensive program in the baby product industry. "JPMA Certification helps to ease new parent worries and make the product selection process easy." added Dwyer. "Keeping children safe is the highest priority for parents and caregivers. Its the highest priority for JPMA, too." How will you know if a product is JPMA Certified? Look for the JPMA Certification seal on product packaging to make sure your products meet the latest safety standards. For help when shopping, print JPMAs Certification Registry to use as your in-store guide for juvenile products.

...It was an adventure

From page 1
It was an adventure, he said of his time in Japan. Me and another fellow, who was also married, tried to stay away from the bars and the ladies, so we would take a cab as far as we could go up the island, or we would go beach-combing to keep busy. In June of that year, Jeske shipped out again, wrapping up his time in the military with a relatively uneventful six months in Vietnam. Now the father of five grown children and married for 28 years to wife Patricia, Jeske said he looks back on his time of service with a grateful heartbecause he realizes his personal outcome could have been very different. Thank God it was a safe time (when I served), he said. I got to swim in two oceans, see both coasts and spend time in Hawaii. And Vietnam was a beautiful country; it was just too bad there was a war. Jeske regards the period of 1966-68 as a time of growth. It taught me a lot about myself, he said. I learned a lot and became able to do a lot of things I didnt know how to do before that. So when he received the call this summer that he would get to revisit that season of his life, Jeske said he considered himself very lucky. Indeed, everywhere the veterans went that day they were thanked and cheered. As their flight departed, three P-51 Mustang fighters escorted the plane and as it landed at the Ronald Reagan Airport, the veterans were greeted by an even bigger crowd, and the plane received a water salute by an airport fire truck, Jeske recalled. People thanked us all day, he said. While we were at the Lincoln Memorial, tourists started gathering around us and taking our pictures. A mother had her 5-year-old son shake my hand. It was wonderful. However, the biggest fanfare was reserved for when the vets returned to AirVenture that evening as they were welcomed back by thousands of peopleincluding officials such as Sen. Ron Johnsonwith signs, hugs and gratitude. We walked through more than three blocks of people, two or three deep, lined up to meet us and thank us, said Jeske, whose personal greetings included a hug from his 10-year-old grandson. It seemed to go on forever; it was just amazing. The evening wrapped up with a concert by actor Gary Sinise's Lt. Dan Band and a performance of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon by Tony Orlando. Jeske said the Honor Flight experience will be filed away with his very best memories. Aside from my marriage and my kids, this was one of the highlights of my life, he said.

Tough Subject Though marked with stories and laughter, these gatherings are also a perfect time to talk about important matters that affect the health of your family members. As the number of those with common ailments such as obesity, heart disease and cancer continues to rise, there are other major conditions that should not be overlooked, such as kidney disease. According to the U.S. Renal Data System, nearly one in six African Americans has signs of kidney disease. With the two primary causes being diabetes and high blood pressure, family reunions are a great

opportunity to gather everyone and talk about family health, as well as encourage those at risk to get tested. The National Kidney Disease Education Programs Family Reunion Health Guide can help you plan a talk about kidney disease and African American families. Visit nkdep.nih.gov/family-reunion to order a copy. Tips for Healthier Family Reunions It can be easy to get family members of all ages involved in healthful activities. Just including a few small changes to your family reunion activities will help get even the youngest members more involved and create a memorable experience for all in attendance. Here are some tips to improve your reunion with healthier activities: Serve Healthy Snacks: This year, skip the fried and fatty foods and serve only wholesome, healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. If foods are served in a potluck style, be sure to connect with other family members and spread the word to only bring foods on the healthy, lighter side. Track Family Health: Capture your familys health history. The Surgeon Generals My Family Health Portrait tool can help you track health conditions that your doctor should know about. To begin your own family's health tracker, visit www.familyhistory.hhs.gov.

Make Your Reunion Interactive: Ask a tech-savvy family member to interview elders within your family using a mobile phone or tablet. From this, create a keepsake video that future generations can watch to better understand family history and health history. Also, invite kids to get involved in creating a Facebook group to keep your family informed and excited about the
reunion. Get Out and Walk: Start a walking or jogging group with your family while at your reunion. Having a buddy can help you stay motivated and active after the reunion. Plus, this will allow you more opportunities for family time in the future. For more information on kidney disease, diabetes, healthy eating and physical activity, visit www.niddk.nih.gov.
