ometimes things work out the way they should. The mare I wrote of a couple of weeks ago that didnt want to travel, belongs to a ten year old girl. She has had a romance with horses as long as she could talk, according to her folks. Ive seen a picture of her as a very small girl absolutely fascinated by a draft horse, a huge draft horse, but its size didnt faze her. She, like many young girls, was and still is, fascinated by, and in love with horses. Her folks told her that when she was ten years old, she cold have a horse. She turned ten a few months ago. We spent some time trying to find the right horse for her and found a 19-year-old mare. She had been in a guest ranch string for a while and was used as a brood mare for a few years. She had four foals and didnt breed back. When I asked the guest ranch horse manager if she had a horse that would work, she recommended this horse. She is gentle, has become a lot easier to catch and the lit-

tle girl spends quite a lot of time with her. Perhaps because she gives treats to the mare has something to do with its becoming more people oriented. She combs the mares mane and braids it, sitting on her back as she does it. Im sure youve seen pictures of other kids doing the same She had some trouble with getting the mare saddled and bridled so she spent time riding it bareback in the pasture with just a halter. The saddle she had was getting a little small for her but she rode it occasionally. A friend loaned her a barrel racing saddle to use. I didnt let her ride it until she cleaned it and oiled it. After she got it done, I spent a couple of hours showing her how to saddle the horse and get it cinched up tight enough. She had trouble getting the saddle on the horse, but after a few tries, she figured it out. Same with the bridle. She had to get the horse to keep its head down low enough for her to reach it and she had to have patience enough to let the mare open her mouth for the bridle, but she got it done. While I was feeding the horses last Sunday, her dad came out and told me that she got to go riding. A couple of her school friends rode over on their horses and asked if she could go along. He said the girls were gone a few hours after riding to Bald Pate Inn where they had some pie then rode till it started raining. Thats how its supposed to go, I think. Ill bet they will be horse lovers for the rest of their lives. Ride easy pards....Vic mtyodeler@hotmail.com
