BULKING OF SAND

What is bulking ? -Bulking Means Increase in volume due to presence of surface moisture. -The volume increases with increase in moisture content till a certain level then vol. decreases . -There is a thin layer of water around the sand grains which causes the bulking . Aim: To Find the Bulking Of Sand in Percentage. Principle : Volume of flooded(inundated) sand is same as volume of sand when dry. Reference : IS 2386(Part-III) - 1963 Apparatus: Water , Cylindrical Container(250 ml) , metal / glass rod ( 6mm dia. ). Material : Sand sample to be tested, water.

Procedure : -Take the soil sample to be tested n fill it in a cylindrical container ( no need to compact ) upto 200 ml mark. -Fill the cylinder with water and stir the sand with a clean rod. -Observe the new level (y) of sand .

Observation Data : Initial level Of Sand = 200 Final level Of Sand (y)= Percentage Bulking = [(200/y)-1] x 100
