BULK DENSITY &VOIDS OF FINE AGGREGATES

AIM : To determine Bulk density and voids of fine aggregates. OBJECT : The bulk density is the weight of material in a given vol and for the purpose of this standard it is measured in kg/litre. The bulk density of an aggregate is affected by several factors: i. Amount of moisture present in the aggregate, ii. Amount of effort introduced in filling the measures.

APPARATUS: Cylindrical metal measure(3 ltr capacity of 150mm internal dia) , Tamping rod(16mm dia and 600 mm length), Balance. REFERENCE: IS:2386 (Part-3) 1963 CONDITION OF SAMPLE: a. Oven dry condition b. Saturated and surface dry condition c. With a given percentage of moisture Note: Condition of sample at the time of test shall be stated PROCEDURE: 1. Compacted Weight: -The cylinder shall be filled in 3 layers with thoroughly mixed aggregates and tamped with 25 strokes of the rounded end of tamping rod. - Similar quantity of the aggregates shall be added further. - The cylinder shall finally be filled to overflowing , tamp 25 times and strike off the surplus aggregates , using the tamping rod as straight edge. - Determine the net weight of aggregate. - Calculate the bulk density in kg/litre. 2. LOOSE WEIGHT: - Fill the measure upto overflowing it by means of a shovel.

- The aggregates shall be discharged from a height not exceeding 5cm above the top of measure. - The surface of the aggregates shall be levelled with a straight edge. - Determine the net weight of aggregate. - Calculate the bulk density in kg/litre.

OBSERVATION TABLE

CALCULATIONS FOR VOIDS: % Voids= [(Gs ) / Gs ] * 100 where, Gs= Specific gravity of aggregate = Bulk density in kg/litre RESULT: - The bulk density shall be reported in kg/litre to the nearest 0.01 kg. - The voids shall be reported in percentage.
