Prepare a paper detailing the role of corrections officials.

At a minimum, your paper should focus upon the corrections officers place within the social roles of inmates as detailed in your text, and the role of corrections officers within jail administration The role of the correction officials is one where the correctional staff has to focus towards the accomplishment of specific goals ( Stojkovic & Farkas, 2003,p.4) We expect them to maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and inmates, Also at a societal level of analysis the corrections official must consider and deal with the political, economic, and culture conditions that affect the administration as well as dealing with the inmate population, one reality within the system the official has to be concern with is Crisis Intervention, where by they have a (CIT) team that attempts to identify the best ways to address a myriad of problems found among jail inmates, another key factor is the supervision of inmates on all levels within the jails and prisons, to me the role of correctional officials and correctional officers are a very tasking role, they have to be able to study and learn all the rules and regulations of the jails and prisons where by in their day to day operations, they are working within the lines of each policy, some officials has to have knowledge of how to deal with those who suffer from mental ills, as well as those with serious behavior problems. The officer has to be able to assist the mental ill by helping them alleviate the everyday stress of jail life (Lombardo, 1985) states Correctional officers can be trained on how to teach inmates to cope with the stresses associated with jail environments. Correctional officers can play a valuable role in the delivery of multidisciplinary mental health services in jails and prisons. Despite differences in their training, culture, and mission, correctional and clinical staffs have some common goals. When correctional officers share appropriate information with clinicians and assist in the management of inmates who have mental disorders, both the quality of treatment and the safety of the correctional environment improve. Mutual respect, proper orientation and training, and ongoing communication and cooperation provide the foundation for meaningful contributions to mental health care by correctional officers from the Multidisciplinary Roles in the 21st Century, The Role of Correctional Officers in the Multidusciplinary

mental health care in prison by Kenneth L. Appelbaum, M.D. James M. Hickey, Psy. D. Ira Packer, Ph.D. http://psychiatryonline.org/data/Journals/PSS/3578/1343.pdf Another aspect is dealing with the different cultures within the prison system; there is a strong diversity reality within the prisons and jails that a correctional officer has to learn to deal with, you have religions, genders, racial and sexual orientations that a officer and also the correctional officials has to deal with within the jail and prison system, by which on a day to day base they have to make sure they do not offend the inmates. Cultural diversity should be shared with cultural
sensitivity training related to people issues such as team building, working and coping with difficult people and addressing the special needs of others [that includes staff, the public and the prison population] that may require specific knowledge and the training should include a focus on the avoidance of using stereotypes or stigmas and assumptions and maintained with the strictest professionals standards imposed in such training environments. http://www.corrections.com/news/article/30240managing-cultural-diversity-inside-prisons I had the chance to sit with a family member who worked within the military prison system, Michael Stanley, who was an officer at the USDB, also known as the United States Disciplinary Barracks in Ft. Leavenworth Ks, and I asked him concern his working within the prison system and his role as an officer, and he stated to me That as an officer he had to try to learn the meaning of all the gang related activities within the prison, as well as the different cultures as far as race relations, and being able to communicate with so many schools of thought when it came to religion So in my study and in the course text the role of the officers in dealing with the inmates and in their role is to provide a safe and effective work environment for both he inmate as well as other officers
