BACKGROUND
On the 18th July, 2012 The Hon Martin Dixon, Minister for Education announced a New high school to bring Coburg community together [See appendix 1]. Mr Dixon said that Coburg Senior High School (CSHS) will expand to include Years 7-9 in 2015. He said the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development would work closely with the school and the local community to ensure the expanded school meets the needs of the local community. This is a big undertaking and I have asked the Department to begin consulting with the school and community to map out what the new school will look like. In term 3, 2012 the High School for Coburg (HSC) Working Group were invited to nominate two members to join a sub-committee of the Coburg Senior High School Governing Board CSHS Community Consultation Sub-Committee. In preparation for the committees eventual first meeting in late December, HSC undertook to do a piece of simple community research to assist the consultation process. Aim: To get a quick snapshot of what the local community would like their local 7-12 high school to be like. To enable Minister Dixons request that the Department consult with the community to map out what the new school will look like.

METHODOLOGY
An online survey predominantly to ask the question How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be? The question was purposefully open-ended. Respondents were also asked where they live and, if their children were likely to attend the expanded school, how many and when. The survey was promoted predominantly via social media. The survey was live online from 30 November 2012 until 18 March 2013 but the 83 percent of responses came in during the first two weeks of December (221 of 267).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Respondents: 267 respondents in total, providing a total of 533 potential future students of the expanded CSHS. Questions and Responses 1. Would any of your children be likely to attend the 7-12 Coburg High in the future? [see chart page 5] 79% of respondents answered Yes. 19% answered Maybe 2% answered No. 2. If yes/maybe please indicate number of children starting year 7 in which year? [see graph page 6] Numbers consistently increased from 42 children starting in 2015 to 71 starting year 7. This was followed by a further 150 who would start year 7 from 2020 onwards. This shows a likely healthy future for the expanded school in terms of enrolments as the results indicate demand will not only continue but increase over time. 3. Which suburb do you live in? [see graph page 7] not surprisingly, 70% of respondents answered that they live in the 3058 suburbs of Coburg. These were Coburg (138), Coburg North (41), Merlynston (4), Coburg West (1) and Coburg East (3). There was 19% from the Darebin suburbs of Preston (19), Preston West (13), Reservoir (15) and Thornbury (3). 6% from Pascoe Vale (11) plus Pascoe Vale South (5). 4. How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be? (Please note this is an intentionally open-ended question, feel free to comment on any aspect of a high school.) We are proud to be part of this community and are confident the expanded Coburg Senior High School our local high school, will reflect all the richness that was evident in the survey responses.

Note: Ideally this report would include a full text analysis of the survey responses to elicit the exact number of respondents mentioning the key themes that came through however this is beyond the means of the High School for Coburg (HSC) working party at this time. We are optimistic that resources may be garnered to give the wonderful responses due credit in the form of a report incorporating text analysis and so in the meantime we will call this an Interim Report. A safe school where strong leadership successfully manages issues of bullying & inclusiveness as well as a focus on academic success. A 'house' system that involves students across the grades/ages is successful in helping combating bullying as a student makes friends across all grades/age groups. Student mentors to help assist student issues, and/or a mentoring/buddy system to again assist in bullying and inclusiveness/academic focus and achievement. Interhouse sports AND academic competitions to bring house-pride to both physical & intellectual pursuits. How about an 'agreement' between school and parents about rights AND responsibilities of both parties so school management is supported when dealing with issues such as bullying etc & help instil a sense of appreciation to attend Coburg High instead of just a feeling of entitlement & potential lack of respect & support towards the school, staff, other students etc. The High school in Coburg should be of a high standard educational facility. It should be comparable to any good high school in the area, Also a uniform should be worn. Students should be proud to attend the school. Violence free, fee free, community connected, approachable, friendly, open, well resourced Academically focused. Safe & friendly learning environment. Community focused and to lead the way in education in the north Bright, fairly academic, offering an alternative to at least 2 or 3 other northern high schools (leaving out NHS and Viewbank) that seem to have pretty low aspiration for their students, reflective of the changing demographic which I would describe as increasingly 'educated left'. Open plan, interesting buildings that keep kids occupied & interested, great grounds with lots of space for vegie patches and chances to learn about the environment. It would be great if it had a social conscience and to be taught sustainable values. Good tolerance values and inclusiveness of all students. Environmental, Art and Academic subjects would be ideal. Top quality education Facilitated with good technology access for all students without parents forking out extra fees. Healthy canteen food options. A strong emphasis on all creative arts subjects. A good sporting program with opportunities for students to compete both locally, nationally and internationally. Male and female students Compulsory formal uniform Open entry with high acedemic expectation School uniform at least until Year 10 Hope it will equip my three children for university studies Technology focussed, with sporting facilities. An open and respectful environment between students and teachers. I would like a school that embraces the diversity of the community (including ethnic, religious, socio-economic but also sexual and gender diversity). I would like the school to aim for the highest possible standards for children

with academic aspirations. I would like a school that sees education in more than one LOTE as essential, as well as music education. 14 15 16 modern, high achieving, academically orientated A top quality school offering broad based education to our community an environment where - the development of the 'whole child' is supported and valued - it's seen as cool to achieve highly in academic, sporting, artistic and/or entrepreneurial pursuits - learning is personalised for all students and opportunities for extension and remediation are commonplace - there are strong relationships between teachers and students and parents - students' learning in the community (eg part time work, internships, volunteer work) is valued by the school, and the connections between the school and the Coburg and wider Melbourne community are strong - 'soft skills' such as teamwork, organisation and leadership are learned. - there is a culture of learning (not wagging or cramming) in the school - there are no dated preconceptions about how the school should be organised/designed, in order to effectively facilitate these goals. Classes and classrooms may not be the best sub-units for the school. Advisory groups within learning communities would probably be better. strong academic focus. good music, spots & art/performing arts programs. environment of tolerance and inclusiveness. We are looking for a school that has a great parent community. We would like lots of opportunities for our children, both educational and socially. We are hoping that the music program expands to more instruments. We want a smooth transition from the primary school and up. I don't know that having open classrooms right away would be beneficial but over the years working up to students being more in control of their education. As a parent from Coburg Primary, we are really proud of the music program at coburg primary, would be great to know that the same kind of quality music program would be offered at coburg high. new, energetic teaching and support staff, inclusive, aiming for high achedemic achievement with an understanding of a well rounded education and the support needs of today's students. One that could support the number of families looking for high quality education for their children. One that would offer similar curriculum to that of Northcote high school. A regular government school. Not experimental. Great facilities for students, academic, arts, technology To be able to cater for students with higher learning capability Students to be happy at the school Strong learning culture Committed teachers Opportunities for students to try extra curricular activities Compulsary and elective subjects. Informal classrooms using latest technology. Small class sizes. Landscaped gardens with quiet areas... I would like the school to have a broad curriculum including arts and languages, lots of opportunities for community and family involvement, a kitchen garden, a loose uniform policy so kids can still express their own identities, and values and a vision that the students and parents are involved in creating. Ideally, I would like Coburg Junior High to prepare students intellectually as well as academically as well as possible for a highly selective global market. In this context I would welcome it if the school would provide thorough language training (e.g. Mandarin and German to speak to two important markets). Apart from that I would want the school to provide a nurturing environment where children can also equally pursue their interests in the arts, music and physical education. My expectation would be that the high school would rather target the upper end of achievement (such as, for example University High and Melbourne High/Mac Robertson High). Creative bullyfree environment that supports children of different cultural backgrounds in the area. Strong in music and specialising in a few other areas of study. I think developing an inclusive, tolerant and respectful school culture is the most important aspect of the new High School. Young people cannot learn effectively in an environment where this is not the case. In particular, I would like to see great emphasis on gender equality. I think young people today are relentlessly exposed to images and messages which objectify their bodies particularly those of girls and young women - and this often spills over into the school environment (sexualised bullying, verbal abuse, 'sexting'). I would like to see a school culture that has women in leadership roles (both as staff and students) and encourages both young women and men to see themselves not simply in bodily terms, but as individuals with diverse skills, interests, goals and challenges. Formal school with a focus on academic achievement. My child currently attends Brunswick East primary, which is a wonderful progressive school experience for us, I would like the opportunity for her to attend a like minded high school, that is based in child led learning. I would also like the the school to offer the International Baccalaureate. I would like a school diverse in languages, the arts and which sees science and technology as an integral part of all learning disciplines, encouraging creative thinking and philosophical critical thinking. One that creates a hub for the community and incorporates young people into the community in many ways so they feel an important part of society and foster respect and responsibility their community members. A safe, challenging and caring invironment that will support our childrens' learning in all areas of the curricullum.

Academic focus, but with an appropriate mix of art, music and sport. Supportive with a zero tolerance for bullying. Should promote the involvement of parents and have a very strong community focus. The school should also have good links with their schools in the area - I.e complement, not compete with Brunswick secondary college, northcote high school etc. Consideration should also be given to a limited amount of single sex classes (e.g Mathis) if there are academic benefits from this A beacon of quality in both the teaching and the school environment. To set an example that creates pride in the teaching staff and a source of inspiration for all prospective students. progressive, using restorative practices opportunities in music music, arts, sport and science linked to community opportunities for excellence for all students - gifted and struggling mix of male and female teachers Modern, co-ed, small class sizes, additional programs for gifted students, additional programs for students with additional learning needs, strong outdoor program focus, technologies in high use (iPads, electronic/interactive whiteboards), student-led learning. Open entry and well resourced Incorporation of multimedia is essential. Use of computers, video, audio, games in everyday lessons. I would much prefer a uniform. Recognition and accommodation of different learning styles is important. Get the culture established before worrying about establishing an accelerated learning program. Please if at all possible don't neglect the non academic subjects. The opportunity to develop leadership skills, team work. open!, i would like to say, my eldest child will be starting high school in 2014... Resemble princes hill in structure and ethos, allow the students a voice and responsibility. No set type of person that the school is attempting to mould. Valuing creativity and Academic excellence equally. A school that recognises all the different cultures of the children with equal respect and celebrates diversity actively. Diversity that reflects the local community. Community and environmentally minded. A balance of opportunities that include academic, artistic and sporting opportunities. Not sure I have the knowledge to answer this yet. It will be many years before my kids would be at high school but I am so pleased that the community has had the success in having this high school extended to include 7-10. Well done! Strong focus on academic curriculum. Compulsory School uniform. Good discipline and anti-bullying initiatives. School curriculum projects which augment the core academic program by encouraging students to engage with the world around them. Strong science and language program's (asian & european). For students who struggle with academic program,there should be good educational pathways which support them to pursue other vocational avenues.

An open school with traditional teaching program which aims for academic excellence. Preference for school uniform. I would also like to see music and art programs. Open to all in the diverse area of Moreland with a varied subject range. open, well equipped, inviting and an encouraging environment. Responsive to current needs high in it and computer skills I am in my 50's and have lived on/off in the City of Moreland for the lasty 30 years - My son is now in his twenties, BUT, if there had been a high school in Coburg at the time we would have sent him there! I have now become a rate payer in Moreland, and have moved into a neighbourhood in North Coburg becoming chockers with young families; I also have great nieces and nephews in the area who will very probably be attending Coburg High; As a member of the community with family members and neighbours who will be attending the school, I hope it becomes a dynamic, inclusive and diverse learning environment for the young people of the area - as well as an accessible space for a whole range of community activities _ i'd like it to become a leader in the appropriate use of a local educational facility for the community outside ( and inside ! ) of school hours. activley non denominational, inclusive An open entry school with high academic standards and a broad curriculum in the arts, sciences and fine arts. A strong focus on drama, public speaking and movement/dance A place where children can learn to be themselves whoever they are, where academic and personal growth can occur side by side and bullying, disruptive behaviour and intolerence of difference does not occur. A wide range of vce subject choices First of all, we do not want it to be a failure like the attempted merger of Coburg High and other primary schools onto the old RMIT campus. A school that provided opportunities for it's students to branch out into many subject varieties. A school with a uniform that did not consist of tracksuit pants as an everyday item of clothing. A school that promoted pride within the students themselves and for their school. A school where everyone is beginning to live within it's zone just like Strathmore High. A school that performs to a highstandard and accomodates for all students needs. A school that intergrates and celebrates its community. their school community. A school that has a beautiful environment with as many eco features as possible. A schoo that promotes skills such as home economics, sewing, woodwork, metal craft, pottery, phys ed., dance, concerts and the healthy competition and participation in interschool sports. A playground of sorts. Children transition from primary school where they have the option to play on out door equipment, into high school and loose all their physical skill and development. 55 Keen to keep the emphasis on teaching digital natives, with cutting edge use of technology. A medium size school, all rounded with strong academic foucs but also broad to suit non academic as well, good visual arts and music. Prefer no uniform, or comftorble, not impressed by blazers. Perhaps the 1012s could have no uniform, keep the Senior feel for that group. Also languages, Spanish and an Asian language would be nice. Strong focus on exceptionally good academic standard Good broad sports program Diverse language classes offered Music program Compulsory school uniform Good linkage with local primary schools Focus on a positive future for all children at the school, highlighting the importance of completing a secondary education regardless of intention to complete further education, ie present to students all the options from university to TAFE and apprenticeships. Strict zero tolerance policy to any form of bullying, harrassment, discrimination etc High achieving, community minded, open, diverse A school that celebrates the cultural diversity of our community; a focus on the environment and sustainability; a school offering a range of specialist subjects; a school that provides a fun and nurturing environment for our children; a good school!! To use advance technology to explore learning creatively but also provide many hands on experiences that educate children in a hands on way, eg science and environment change explored by creating a ecosystem on the school grounds. A science based school would be great. Inclusive, encouraging, offering many and varied opportunities to inspire and interest kids of this age level. Offering sport, arts, drama, music, languages, both during curriculum and after school. Something that is innovative in its practices and is open to change as the school evolves, but with clear vision. A highly skilled, reputable and high-performing school - the best government school in the Northern suburbs. A positive happy environment for learning with a focus on good quality education. Innovative curriculum programs with a broad selection. A school based on sound teaching methods and curriculum. A school that with time will attract and keep good and enthusiastic teachers. A school that the community gossip indicates is a good school relatively free from gangs and bullying. I want there to be a uniform to avoid competition, nastiness etc around what kids are wearing. a one-size-fits-all regular open-entry high school ie not a select entry school Strong focus on the arts, social justice, environment, connected to the community, Modern, cutting edge, supportive, self esteem building, caring. Focus on high standard of output. To be a school that you wish you were zoned to. A school that reflects the area. A school that will allow students to develop into their best. A school where the environment, community and the arts is valued and explored. I would like a school where students will not be I.T reliant but will be able to follow their own path ways. I think it would be good to keep the independent learning feel of the senior campus in tact, and have a kinda of 'junior' campus (eg. buildings) in the neighbouring paddock. A big focus on achieving high academic results which rival many of the state schools in the eastern suburbs traditionally referred to as upper class suburbs. Coburg and its neighbouring suburbs deserve to be recognised as one of the best in the state. Inclusive, innovative, creative, respectful, compassionate. To embrace the individual and recognise one size does not fit all! Creativity & imagination magnified! A place where students feel safe to explore, learn & create. A nurturing, highly creative & 'green' environment. Parent involvement in all aspects of school life. I have a 16yr old son, a 12yr old son and a 3yr old son. Both my oldest sons have done all their primary school years in Coburg. The wonderful thing about most of the primary schools in Coburg is their focus on the community and the environment. It would be lovely if this was maintained in a High School for Coburg. My oldest son is starting next year at Coburg Senior High School and from what i have felt so far, their way of teaching is also very refreshing. Good luck with everything. Yes - don't understand why the coburg senior school wasnt reopened as a year 7 school and slowly extra years added in the first place! I think the school needs an area of focus to excel in (i.e. music/sport) in order to attract high quality teachers. a mix of cultural focus reflecting the demographics of the area, and awareness/application of environmental sustainability reflecting the location next to merri creek (opportunity to link with friends of merri creek, merri creek management committee etc) I would like the philosophy and uniqueness of the Senior School to continue & follow on and trickle down from year 12 to year 7. l would like the school to offer both a high quality IT proramme and also an oustanding performing arts programme so it caters to families who have 1 of each child as l do...Discipline and social skills are also very important... Emphasis on equality and tolerance, no accelerated learning programs.

I would like to see flexible learning opportunities to cater for a range of learning styles and abilities. Also a pastoral care model where 'home groups' are across ages engendering more inclusiveness and kids of different year levels engaging with each other. I would also like to see active community engagement, where the kids work on community development / enhancement projects locally and for the older ones potentially nationally or internationally. I would like it to be an inclusive, creative, positive learning environment where differences are celebrated and where all children are given opportunities to reach their potential. Friendly, high quality education, arabic language That it be a school developed in consultation and with involvement from the community, so great question! Personally, my child attends a state primary school with a Steiner stream and I love the diversity and creativity of the curriculum. It also has a strong focus on indigenous studies and culture, so would love for this to deepen at a high school level. Also, for the arts to be integrated into the curriculum as it brings so much richness to the more traditionally academic subjects. Integration of the curriculum as a whole, to be conscious of the links between disciplines and the history of their development across time, seems to be a really valuable way of learning that contextualises why and how we learn what we learn today. An inclusive,friendly school which sets high expectations for its students. A community embraced school with a high standard of education. A school that promotes tolerance & respect and community participation. Has a choice of language programs and excellent sporting facilities as well as music and art programs. Clean, Respecful, Positive school, Be open I would like it not be be boundary restricted as I think we are just out of range. I would like it to have a school uniform. I would like it to have a focus on the arts - fine arts, music, materials technology but also to provide languages and more traditionally academic curriculum such as high level maths, english, sciences and even cooking and sewing/fashion. Strong discipline in an extraordinarily positive environment. Strong programs to enhance girls' opportunities. Well balanced range of subject opportunities. Challenging and extremely supportive. High standards academically and morally. Strong sustainable leadership. Well equipped with modern grounds and facilities, state of the art! Teachers who are inspiring and experienced. I'm delighted there's anothr local high school for us to choose from. 93 Have a strong community spirit including inter-year activities and interaction. Be of a smallish size 400 - 500 students. Encourage free thinking. Have an arts and music element to it. Offer an environment that encourages self confidence in students. Offer courses in practical skills - making things. Encourage academic excellence. Provide inspirational teachers and mentors. not an experimental, open learning format welcoming and inclusive part of the local community before and after school hours the new 7 to 9 years embraced by the teachers and staff at the school I would like support it's students to be the best they can be. It should also not compromise on an acceptable level of behaviour (which is what caused it to be reduced from a full high school in the past) inclusive, progressive, sustainable (in all ways...such as environmental and financial etc) intelligent leadership, inspired teachers, fresh start .... Diverse and inclusive Academically focussed High-achieving (science please!) and inclusive, staffed with an outstanding Principal and excellent, happy, well-paid teachers who encourage individual endeavour and strong social values. Classes should be a manageable size and the school should be open to new ways of using technology to inspire a life-long love of learning. I would love to see coburg high school represent all that is great about living in coburg. Friendliness, respect and a community that embraces our beautiful mixture of people from all backgrounds and ages. I would like to see the school well equipped in music, theater arts and visual art. I would also like the school to have a strong science program with a focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. It would be excellent to have a Secondary college that offers extensively learning opportunity in a variety of subjects suchs as; Arts, music, environment studies, business studies, diverse sports, horticulture etc. I would also like to see studies on bullying & self defence. The opportunity for students to also study abroad for 3,6,12 months would also be advantageous. As well as unique camp opportunities. Where to begin?! Supportive and encouraging; Local community focused; High academic standards, using national or international standards/exams/qualifications; and obviously good facilities (funding permitting of course!); Uniform essential. Inclusive and multicultural with the opportunity for children of all abilities to reach their academic potential. As a mother of two children with Asperger's Syndrome, who don't have much choice in their education I would love the school to be as Autism-friendly as possible. I would like an emphasis on arts and music, but obviously not at the expense of disciplines such as maths, science, english etc.. If the inclusive, friendly, and safe environment provided at Newlands Primary exists/existed at Coburg High I would be very happy. Continuing 21st Century Education philosophy. Some Primary Schools in the area already have established netbook programs, minimal textbook, with technology being used in various ways as educational tools (eg. see Pascoe Vale Primary School). So certainly achievable in the 7-9 stream. This could then extend on the current program being currently offered at Coburg SH, without making major changes to building infrastructure and teaching pedagogy. It would also give the school a unique flavour Being so well positioned, it isn't inconceivable that the school develop stronger sporting and arts programs. The Town Hall, close sporting facilities and local attractions, make it ideally situated. Multilingual. Sustainable. A school with high academic standards and a good range of subjects for students to choose from as well as extra circular activities available A centre for high quality education with a strong emphasis on respect for others. A wide ranging curriculum that gives the students the opportunity to chance to study in areas of their choice would be important. My recent exposure to high schools is limited but I tend to hear a fair bit about the arts and culture but very little about school sport. Arts and culture are important and equally, if not more so, is physical activity. School should not be too big - ideally less than 700 students. Coburg High School needs to be a well rounded school that will cater for the needs of the children in an academic, artistic, and physical nature. I would expect the school to focus on the individual's needs, and provide the correct tools so they can strive and achieve their best for the future. Would like it to offer a broad curriculum (arts, sciences, humanities) supporting student interests and learning at all levels. With a strong focus on encouraging students to pursue higher learning post school. Incorporating a selective stream such as Brunswick Secondary and Northcote High have could help to facilitate that. It would be great to see a school with a broad range of subjects and a strong arts and music program. A focus on community and environment, and definately not an "Apple" sponsored school where every student has a tablet and it is all about IT. Life is about a lot more than IT. A hub for the community Inclusive of diverse community, Two-way community connection -including parents, business, community groups , local primary schools etc. Sustainability theme in curriculum and building refurbishment. Languages. Uniform. Music.Academic but also VCAL/VET/ school based apprenticeships.. Build on existing community strengths. Supportive of teachers. A school culture of diversity and openness is important for our family. No uniform please! Student centred learning. Needs to cater for introverted children as well as extroverted children. Introverted children need to have individual tasks as well as group learning and also need areas where they can escape (for a time) from big noisy learning environments. How well CSHS manages the open plan learning environments in this regard could be a deal maker or breaker for us. Good range of subjects including humanities and the arts. A language program would be good too. Would also like to see PCs used as well as Macs. In a modern digital environment, children need to be fluent in both. It is important to me that the school attracts great teachers and staff that are treated with respect and given support so that they stay with the school for a long time. Not too big. Strong maths and science. Friendly. I would like the school to offer a wide curriculum with special attention to the arts and to science and technology. Asian languages should be offered as well as some history and humanities subjects that teach about our region and are not northern hemisphere centric. I also think that it is important that the student body gets a focus on team building and community awareness and participation in the early years to help develop a secure and happy place for our kids to continue their formal learning. environmental/sustainable design respectful, supportive but relaxed environment as well as usual curriculum, focus on emotional development and wellbeing There should be a uniform, some sort of specialty but catering for all kids, the ones who want to continue through their education and those that want to be tradespeople. A focus on healthy, good eating and lots of physical activity... Physical activity should be a part of the norm not just a subject that people have to do a couple of times per week, encourage riding to school by ensuring their are adequate bike facilities and possibly providing a muesli bar or something for the kids that ride in. Inclusive. It needs to provide excellent schooling with good role models. Although grades are clearly key to getting into the right Uni course for our children, teaching should not be all about hitting these type of targets. Other KPIs should be decided on and measured. The children should be allowed to be their age! Smart kids should be challenged and those that need extra support should get it. A big ask :) And finally, having started as a school driven by passionate parents, the community should continue to have the chance to be involved, and the school should put back into the community on a regular, planned basis. On top of great academic learning, I'd like the school to teach environmental, cultural and personal respect. I'd like to see a school where the families as well as the students and staff are actively involved in making progressive developments for the school and students. used for 100% of the school work, no text books or handwritten notes. If this is true, it is disappointing. Obviously it is important the children learn computer skills but they need to learn maths and writing and spelling and grammar using some other methods such as text books too. They shouldn't be completely reliant on computers. 165 Thinking curriculum, progressive curriculum, we have the opportunity to start new programs based on current educational research. Arts, music, drama & sport. We as a family, are very keen for there to be a quality secondary school that rivals those in the eastern suburbs. Too often the northern suburbs are provided with schools with poor educational and behavioural standards, substandard facilities, and under resourced staff. A place of learning that focuses on encouraging students to extend beyond their comfort zones while ensuring a sense of inclusion and belonging. A place with a strong sense of school, community and social obligation and awareness A school that people move to Coburg so their Childrens can be educated. Offer a good range of subjects as well as extra curricular activities My son is at Brunswick East PS in prep this year, and I love their approach to learning (based on Reggio Emilia). It is great they way they empower children to decide on how they will learn. I would love for my children to have the option to continue in this style of education once they start secondary school. So that is my hope: that Coburg high school will be something different that the old-style of pedagogy and will be truely learner-centred. I would also like a school that has a strong sense of it's own values that students, their families and the wider community can share and foster. Schools are so much more than just a place of education - they are places that create community and so Coburg high school has the potential to help build the broader Coburg community. This should be equally as important as educating it's students. I would love for Coburg high school to have a thriving community of parents and other supporters to make it a great school. I would like the school to have a uniform as I believe this helps to create in students a sense of belonging, and helps students to identify with their school and be proud to represent it. I would like any facilities such as sports grounds, school halls, etc. to be available to the wider community for use outside school hours. The school should offer curricula that caters to both academic and vocationally oriented students. Options such as VCAL and VET in Schools should be available, not just VCE and IB. It is an absolute disgrace that the current government has reduced the availability of VCAL and VET in Schools program through recent budget cuts. Efficiently run with amazing teachers that work well with teenagers. I'd love to see the school pursuing an inquiry-based learning program. My eldest child is enrolled at Brunswick East Primary School, and like many of the parents there I feel sorry that the style of learning experienced there is hard to find at the high-school level. Local high schools that offer some inquiry-based learning are typically very hard to get into. Above all we need excellent and passionate teachers who are willing to work for the best possible outcome for each student. Open spaces and a safe and lovely environment for all to enjoy. Friendly, with inclusive educational ethos, to do its bit for harmony, close to parkland, encouraging of every level of learning, including physical, but with extension options in English. Good music program, languages. We believe life skills are exceptionally important in secondary school, particularly emotional intelligence, managing emotions, meditation and relaxation techniques, mindfulness, building self esteem, respect for others. We would also like to see teaching of a variety of religions and an awareness of different cultures to help foster acceptance of all. Other life skills that we would like to be taught are money management, preventative health and nutrition knowledge. We would like to see the latest techology being incorporated in the classroom as much as possible, and would support each student having an ipad. We support streaming in certain subjects, and if not streaming, we would like students to be given the opportunity to expand their knowledge in areas they are excelling at, so they are learning problem solving and continually challenging themselves. We also see as important the opportunity for students to be involved in extra curricular programs such as music, drama, art and sport. I would like it to be an easy accessible school where children are stimulated to learn and where social skills are highly valued. It is a place which does not discriminate nor bullies and where overbody has a fair go. I would like it to be inclusive, representative of the community, full of eager kids and committed teachers. I would ideally like a uniform too! I would Coburg High school to be an excellent generalist high school. Very high academic standards and excellent quality of teaching are very important, but as well as that a caring, student-focussed school. I would like it to be a traditional school in terms of uniform, attendance, and pastoral care. I would like to see a broad range of extra activities offered, like a music program with school choir and band, inter-school sport, an art program, a school play, school camps and outdoor education. These things are really important for developing a strong sense of school community. I would like the school to offer a good range of VCE subjects and some VET if there is demand, but excellence in academic standards is key. I want this to be a school of choice, not some alternative experiment, or have a narrow focus on one particular area. A high achievers selective entry scheme is not necessary but would be ok. I would obviously like the school to be focused on encouraging excellence in academic pursuit, but in a nurturing and supportive manner. There should be an environmental charter and a focus on the provision of healthy food i.e. a kitchen garden that is created and farmed for use in the school's canteen. There should be a well being programme, perhaps afterschool, which offers a range of activities to enable students to achieve optimum health outcomes. Activites could include yoga, meditation etc. The school needs to achieve the best possible outcomes with regards sustainability. Also, the school should move away from archaic modes of learning and employ the use of teaching methods, eg an inquiry based model of learning, that will better equip our children for the challenges of 21st century living. The school also needs to develop relationships/links with tertiary institutions of all descriptions so that students have clear and viable choices and pathways to higher learning opportunities. Inclusive to give kids experience of all cultures and socio economic background. Attentive so educational experience feels unique and focused. Innovative so the school quickly develops a reputation for putting into practice proven, new educational methods. High standards - a unapologetic focus on delivering academic excellence and results. Sustainable - best use of the refurbishment process to integrate 'case study' standard sustainability measures that can then be linked with education. biggest hope is that this school will be one that is admired and recognised for the achievements of it's students. I would not be interested if it was merely a TAFE replacement. It needs to be a place of motivation and inspiration for learning, with an aim to prepare students for further study. 203 Wide range of subjects including languages. Opportunity to use new technologies. Use of local surrounds including creek. Open plan classrooms. Emphasis on media and communication. Open to special needs children; a self motivated learning environment; limited homework option, so parents can focus on parenting and engaging with their children; collaborative learning with businesses and community, VELS option, sport, phys ed and excellence in science and maths; community engagement. I would like to see a emergent curriculum which is based around students strengths and interests. Communtiy involvement. Strong academically - opportunities for students to extend themselves, and encouragment to build on their individual strengths. A range of specialist programs that enable students to engage in areas in which they excel (and by this I don't mean sport - there are already a number of sports specialist schools in Victoria, and the tendency to favour sporting prowess over academic achievement is a bit of a travesty.) I would like it to have a good music and drama program Given plans for Coburg 2020, I think they key would be to provide a secondary school in an urban area with enough grounds to accommodate sports, recreational areas for students and adequate trees and plant life. Non-uniform! A space for inquisitorial skills, life skills and respect for young people. I'd like to see good programs for stimulating and extending talented kids too, eg multi-ageing and acceleration. We would like this high school to be a local school, with mostly children from the area. We would like to see it take on all children regardless of ability (ie. not to pick the best). We would like it to be a major part of the Coburg community with high amounts of parent participation and events/functions that parents can attend (and organise as a parent group). A school that offers a wide variety of subjects to cover the needs/interests of all children. One that sees the Arts/creative subjects as EQUALLY as important as standard core studies. A school that acknowledges and supports children with additional learning needs. i dont know Safe, bullying free, smaller classrooms, tolerant. A community in which parents and teachers work together to ensure our children can thrive without fear. As my boys are now in Strathmore SC I probably won,t need to move them. However what I would like to see in the new High School is; 1. Compulsory School uniform 2. Following successful other school models rather than trying to be radically different. A good mix of academic, sports, arts and music. Small classes, community minded with emphasis on social justice Welcoming to children of diverse backgrounds. Encouraging creativity and independent thinking while supporting academic development. Enthusiastic teachers; links to facilities, community projects and businesses so there are lots of hands on experience opportunities for students. A school where students feel safe and able to thrive. Good community feel and creative use of technology and spaces. I like the way the campus feels a bit like a college now - where students are treated as adults, it would be good if some of this could continue for the younger years. Well resourced, small class sizes, diverse teachers who reflect the area. Special, inclusive, great educational opportunities I would like it to be relevant and future thinking with a community emphasis and a sustainable and environmental focus. Please look into the work of Professor Stephen Heppell (www.heppell.net), Sir Ken Robinson (www.sirkenrobinson.com) and Will Richardson (willrichardson.com). They are doing great things with researching and creating great spaces for best education practice and high student interest and involvement. They come to Melbourne regularly and might even come and talk to HSC group. Especially Stephen and Will who are often sponsored by DEECD and/or State Library of Victoria to come to Melbourne. a school that is welcoming, has good anti-bullying policies in place, has great teachers and good facilities A public school offering a strong work ethic on education that also includes arts and sports. Would like the school to have a good enthuses on Maths, science & IT. Also a good community spirit. Especially at first just focus on the core curriculum and getting the basics right which its getting established. would send my older child in 2014 if the school was open! Work with local primary schools to ensure it meets diverse needs of kids in this community, and to link in with what they have focussed on (ie languages taught). Would love to see a program that offers music and the arts equally with sport, and to continue focus on science and technology. Celebrate cultural diversity, and cater for educational needs of kids on all levels - from those needing a bit of extra, targeted support, to those who need extension and challenge. I would like a school that fosters diversity, that nutures the kid's individual interests and strengths, and doesn't try to focus on too much rote learning. I would like to see arts, music, literature, languages and history as strong a focus as maths and sport. I would like the school initiate activities that encourage participation in the local communities. A school that is supportive of all kids. Children who attend Coburg High should also want to achieve and do well. There needs to be some discipline as well. Not fussed if there is a school uniform or not, however, there needs to be rules and regulations that all families must adhere to. I would like it to be an open entry high school with an emphasis on creative arts. If my daughter was to go there she would like to study Japanese and other languages.I would like to grounds to be well maintained and to offer passive and active recreation. A community oriented, supportive learning environment where all students are encouraged to excel, thrive and love the school they attend. Led by a community minded principal that attracts and retains progressive staff. Engaged with a politically active council and pfa that is accountable to the community. I think it is important to have staff with a range of experiences. I want to see an emphasis on reading and writing, over computer usage so that skills like spelling are honed. I would like to understand the zoning for the school, I live in Preston and we are in NO MAN's land, out of zone for Northcote, Thornbury, and the large school in Reservior. There has been a huge demand for primary school in our area, Preston West where my child will be attending is full. I would really like to back this high school - we need to support the North, my cconcern is that we will miss out again and become out of zone for yet another high school. Have a uniform, run similar to other successful high school. If offers languages, have look at what nearby primary school offer. To be able to offer continuity. One where children are inspired to realise their potential (ie. great teachers!). Vibrant, accepting, strong community, range of oppportunities, good results. My child has an academic bent - it would need to meet his needs in this respect for us to send him there. A beacon of educational achievement. Offering a broad range of academic and vocational subjects, with high expectations of students. Offering sciences, languages, music. It needs a library A school that values and promotes academic excellence as well as a holistic approach to education. have program that cater for all children, special need and accelarated programs. A great state school which fosters excellence in education and the Arts. Perhaps select entry? To the standard of exceptional & quality education that our children deserve. Modeling off existing, good practicing Secondary schools-such as Strathmore Secondary or Buckley Park Secondary College. Supported by the community - this is only going to work if we send our kids there! If we make the commitment it will work! I'm getting frustrated by people saying I'll only send my kids there if its good or I'm not sure if it will be established enough for my kids - well if we do not use it we will lose it! if we make the commitment to it how can it fail? It ll fail if it hasn't got the student numbers! Normal. Not elitist. I went to Melbourne High - it's a great school, but I don't need another Melbourne High in my suburb. I just want a normal entry high school near my house. I want more focus on academic achievement than on sporting achievement. I don't want either to be pursued to the ends of the earth. I would like it to be progressive, sustainable, bully-proofed and inviting... responsive and inclusive of community and education partners. I'd like it to lose the current reputation of being mostly for kids who slip through the cracks. I want it to be roomy with lots of green space. I'd like to see the school garden program expanded. I'd like the school to be aware of borderline special needs, especially Aspergers and to have lots of extracuricular activities which stimulate and support kids pursuing creative endeavors, including technical developments and scientific innovations/explorations. I'd like to see lots of free choice among the curriculum with clear pathways for further university &/or vocational studies. I'd like for the staff to be top-notch, sensitive and intuitive about young people's needs as well as well informed about the latest practices in high school education. I'd like to see a proactive approach to professional development and a creative and inspired ability to pursue and recieve funding from diverse sources and partnerships to ensure all of the above. I'd like to see the community actively involved and accepted in the development of the school in its early days and throughout it's development. As it is a largely blank slate, I would like to see a "best practice" progressive high school focussing on excellence Open to people on the borders of Moreland Inclusive with plenty of involvement from parents An educationally and socially progressive school with strong community links. Strong focus on academic opportunities including science, community and the arts. Preferrably with a uniform for the Junior School.
