Part A
1. A shopkeeper has 75 kg and 120 kg of sugar of two different qualities, S1 and S2 respectively. They are to be mixed in 1 kg packages as follows: a low grade mix has 250 gm of S1 and 750 gm of S2, whereas a high grade mix has 500 gm if S1 and 500 gm of S2. If the profit on the low grade mix is Rs 2 per package and that on the high grade mix is Rs 3 per package, how many packages of each mix (low grade, high grade) should be made for maximum profit? (1) (45, 150) Solution: (2) (60, 125) (3) (65, 130) (4) (75, 120) (5) (90, 105)

Let x packets of low grade and y packets of high grade sugar be packed. we get 250x+500y = 75000 -----------(1) and, 750x + 500y = 120000 -----------(2) solving we get x = 90 and y = 105 rest all combination will lead to an excess amount of a particular quality of sugar with the sugar. => option (5)
2. A circle with radius 6 is inscribed in a rhombus with side 13. What is the area of the region interior to the rhombus but exterior to the circle? ( = circumference of the circle/diameter of the circle) (1) 156 36 36 Solution: (2) 169 36 (3) 98 36 (4) 78 36 (5) 133

The diamater of the circle is the height h of the Rhombus. So, h=12 As side is given to be 13 and we know that Area of a parallelogram is base * height,and rhombus being a parallelogram => Area of the rhombus = 12*13 = 156 Area of the cricle = pi * (6)^2= 36 * pi. So, required area = 156 - 36 * pi => option (1)
3. Let a, b, c be real numbers

1 1 7 1 If a + b + c = 7, a b + b c + c a = 10 b c a Then, b c + c a + a b =
(1) 19/10 (2) 17/10 (3) 9/7 Solution: (4) 3/2 (5) none of these

-3-

If a + b + c = 7, and 1/(a+b) + 1/(b+c) + 1/(c+a) = 7/10. Multiply both => 1+a/(b+c) + 1+b/(c+a) + 1+c/(a+b) = 49/10 => option (1)
4. In Indian cricket, an election took place. Every one who voted for the BCCI had played an international match at least once in a lifetime. Among those who voted for ICL, 90% had never played any international match. What percent of all the voters did the BCCI get in the election if exactly 46% of all voters taking part in the election had played an international match at least once in their lifetime? (1) 40% these Solution: (2) 43.6% (3) 45% (4) 46% (5) none of

Let a total of 100 people voted . and number of people who voted for BCCI be x. then people who voted for ICL is 100-x 46 of them have played international match . So 46 - x voted for ICL and have played international match. THIS is 10% of the total voters who voted for ICL. So, 46 - x = (.1)*(100-x) or , x = 40. => option (1)
5. How many natural numbers n have such a property that out of all the positive divisors of number n, which are different from both 1 and n, the greatest one is 15 times greater than the smallest one? (1) 1 Solution: (2) 2 (3) 3 (4) There are no such numbers (5) Infinitely many

If S is the smallest asked factor and L the largest then S.L = N => 15S^2 = N. But S can take values less than or equal to the smallest prime factor of 15 => S = 2, 3.
=> option (2)

6. The altitude to the hypotenuse of a right triangle cuts it into segments of lengths p and q, p < q. If that altitude is the hypotenuse, then p/q will equal a - b . Then the numerical value of a + b is (1) 8 Solution: (2) 11 (3) 9 (4) 12 (5) 5

Let ABC be the triangle be right angled at B.Let altitude to hypotenuse be of length h. AB^2 + BC^2 = (p+q)^2, also AB^2 = h^2+p^2 and BC^2 = h^2 + q^2 also we know that AB^2 +BC^2 = (p+q)^2 = p^2+q^2 +2pq

-4-

2h^2+p^2+q^2 = p^2+q^2+2pq h^2 = pq --------------(1) given h = (1/4)*(p+q) ---------------(2) from 1 and 2 we have, p^2+q^2 = 14 pq or p/q+q/p = 14 solving we get p/q = 7(+/-)4v3 so a+b = 11 => option (2)
7. If 1/3(log M/log 3) + 3(log N/log 3) = 1 + log 5/log 0.008, then (1) M9 = 9/N N9 = 9/M Solution: (2) N9 = 9/M3 (3) M3 = 3/N (4) N9 = 3/M (5)

write log 0.008 = 3*log(.2) = 3(log2 -1 ) write log 5 =log(10/2) = log10-log2 = 1- log2 solving we get, N^9 = 9/M so => option(5)
8. The digits a, b, c satisfy the condition 0 < a < b < c. The sum of all three- digit numbers with different digits that can be formed by using only digits a, b, c is equal to 1554. What is the value of digit c? (1) 3 Solution: (2) 4 (3) 5 (4) 6 (5) 7

Total no. of nos. formed by a,b,c=3!=6 Out of these a,b,c will each come twice at units place. So sum of digits at units plce=2(a+b+c),which is same as hundreds and tens place. So their sum=2(a+b+c)*111 So 222(a+b+c)=1554 =>a+b+c=7 now as 0 < a < b < c so c=4 => option (2)
DIRECTIONS for Questions 9 and 10: Answer the following questions based on the information given below Two binary operations @ and * are defined over the set {a, e, f, g, h} as per the following tables: @ a e f g h a a e f g h e e f g h a f f g h a e g g h a e f h h a e f g

-5-

* a e f g h

a a a a a a

e a e f g h

f a f h e g

g a g e h f

h a h g f e

Thus, according to the first table f@g = a, while according to the second table g*h = f, and so on. Also, let f2 = f*f and g3 = g*g*g and so on 9. What is the smallest positive integer n such that gn = e? (1) 2 Solution: g*g*g*g = g*g*h = g*f = e => option (3) 10. Upon simplification, {a10*(f10@g9)}@e8 equals (1) e (2) f (3) g (4) h (5) a (2) 5 (3) 4 (4) 6 (5) 3

Solution: {a10*(f10@g9)}@e8 equals a*(h@g)@e => Option (1)

11. A regular hexagon of area 16 sq. cm is clipped symmetrically across its corners to obtain the largest possible regular hexagon. The area of the new hexagon formed is (1) 6 sq. cm Solution: (2) 8 sq. cm (3) 63 sq. cm (4) 83 sq. cm (5) 12 sq. cm

The lines inside the hexagon show the way in which corners have been clipped. area of initial hexagon=6*(v3/4)a^2=16 a^2=64/6v3--------1 side of new hexagon =(a/2)(sin 60) *2=av3/2, new area=6*(v3/4)(av3/2)^2 put value of a^2 from 1, new area=12 cm sq => option (5)
12. If the product of n positive numbers is unity, then their sum is (1) a positive integer(2) divisible by n (5) at least two of the foregoing Solution: (3) never less than n (4) equal to n+1/n

-6-

AM >= GM => option (3) 13. The infinite sum 5/13 + 55/132 + 555/133 + 5555/134 + equals (1) 56/25 (2) 65/36 (3) 46/21 (4) 55/26 (5) 54/25 Solution:

5/13 + 55/13^2 + 555/13^3 + .......................infinity = 5/9(9/13 + 99/13^2 + 999/13^3 + ..................... " = 5/9[(10-1)/13 + (100-1)/13^2 + (1000-1)/13^3 ...................] = 5/9[{(10/13)^1+(10/13)^2 + (10/13)^3 +.................} - { (1/13)+(1/13)^2 + (1/13)^3 + .......}] Now solve this infinite GP to get 65/36 => option (2)
14. A class has certain number of students each having 1 to 6 books. The total number of students having 2 to 5 books each is 10.A total of 7 students have 4 to 6 books each. The total number of students having 2 to 3 books is 4. Which among is following is/are false? I. If the total number of students in the class is 13, then only 2 students have one book each II. If 6 students have 3 to 4 books each and 4 students have 5 to 6 books each, then only 1 student has 2 books III. If the class has 14 students, and 5 students have 5 to 6 books each, then 9 students have 1 to 4 books each IV. Only 1 student has 6 books (1) Only I and II these Solution: (2) Only II and III (3) only III and IV (4) only II and IV (5) none of

Given that each student have 1 to 6 books 2 to 5 books = 10 students -------------- (1) 4 to 6 books = 7 students ----------------(2) 2 to 3 books = 4 students ----------------(3) from (1) and (3) we have 4 to 5 books = 10 -4 =6 students ----------(4) from (2) and (4) we have 1 student who has 6 books. -------------(5) so IV is true. Now start checking options one by one. option I : from (3), (4) and (5) we have;

-7-

4 to 5 books = 6 students 6 books = 1 student 2 to 3 books = 4 students total no: of students till now considered is 6+1+4 = 11. so rest 2 out of 13 will have 1 book each so I is also true. option II: 4 students have 5 to 6 books each so by (2) we have 3 students who have 3 books each. now 6 student have 3 to 4 books means remaining 3 will have 4 books each. Now by (3) we have 4 students who have 2 to 3 books each out of which 3 have exactly 3 books each so 1 will have exactly 2 books. So II is also true. option III: 5 students have 5 to 6 books so by (2) 2 will have 4 books each. 1 has 6 books. and by (3) 4 have 2 to 3 books each so total student counted in this process = 4+2+4+1 = 11 so remaining 3 will have 1 book each. all together 9 will have 1 to 4 books each. so option III is also true. so option (5) none of these.

Part B
15. Let a and b be such prime numbers that a>b and numbers a b and a + b are also prime numbers. Then the number S = a + b + (a b) + (a + b) is: (1) An even number by 5 (4) Divisible by 7 Solution: b has to be 2 => a, a-2, a+2 are all primes. Now, a can be of any 3 forms 3k, 3k+1, 3k+2. For a = 3k, all of 3k, 3k-2, 3k+2 are primes or for a = 3k+1, all of 3k+1, 3k-1, 3k+3 are primes or for a = 3k+2, all of 3k+2, 3k, 3k+4 are primes => k can take just one value = 1 => a = 5. Option (5) 16. Two semicircles with diameters AB and AD were inscribed in square ABCD (see the figure). If |AB| = 2, then what is the area of the shaded region? (2) Divisible by 3 (5) A prime number (3) Divisible

(2) 2

(3) 2

(4) 2 2

3 (5) 4
Solution:

Join DB and show that the area of the curve AOA (O is the point of intersection of the diagonals) and the unshaded region in triangle BCD is equal. Option (2)
17. A, B and C start running simultaneously from the points P, Q and R respectively on a circular track. The distance between any two of the three points P, Q and R is L and the ratio of the speeds of A, B and C is 1:2:3. If A and B run in opposite directions while B and C run in the same direction, what is the distance run by A before A, B and C meet for the third time? (1) 9L Solution: (2) A, B and C never meet (3) 10 L (d) 12 L (5) 24 L

Consider a circular track...let point P,Q,R be the points at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock of a clock resp. ie at angle of 120 deg with pt P at the top Let A move clockwise and B,C move anticlockwise.Let speeds be x,2x and 3x resp Now,dist btw A and B is L time of meeting of A,B=L/3x Now next they meet at intervals of 3L/3x (Since now both hv met and will meet after

-9-

completing one round) dist btw A and C=2L 1st time of meeting of A,C=2L/4x Now next they meet at intervals of 3L/4x So time of meeting of A,B can be written as (L/x)(1/3 , (1+ 1/3) , (2+ 1/3) , .....) and time of meeting of A,C can be generalised as (L/x)(1/2 , (1/2 + 3/4) , (1/2 + 6/4),...) which gives for A,B (L/x)(1/3,4/3,7/3,10/3,....) and for A,C (L/x)(1/2,5/4,8/4,11/4,14/4,....) there is no common term in the series,so the 3 will never meet => option (2)
18. A tangent to the inscribed circle of a triangle drawn parallel to one of the sides meets the other two sides at X and Y. What is the maximum length XY, if the triangle has perimeter 4? (1) 2/3 Solution: (b) 3/2 (c) 1 (d) 4/3 (e) 22/3

Let BC be the side parallel to XY, h the length of the altitude from A, and r the radius of the in-circle. Then XY/BC = (h - 2r)/h. But r.4 = h.BC. So XY = (4 - 2BC)BC/4 = (4^2/8 - 2(BC - 4/4)^2)/4. So the maximum occurs when BC = 1 and has value 1/2.
19. The number of two-digit positive integral values of m for which the roots of the equation mx2 + (2m-1)x + (m-2) = 0 are rational is (1) 5 Solution: (2) 9 (3) 10 (4) 7 (5) 8

for roots to be rational....b^2-4ac should be a perfect square. i.e.,(2m-1)^2 -4m(m-2) = k^2 or, 4m+1 = k^2 m=( k^2-1)/4 for m to be a positive integer....7 values satisfy. 12,20,30,42,56,72,90 => option(4)
20. Let {an} be an arithmetic sequence that is not constant and {bn} a geometric sequence that is not constant. Assume that a40 = b40 > 0 and a60 = b60 > 0. Then: (1) a50 = b50 Solution: (2) a50 < b50 (3) a50 > b50 (4) a40 = b60 (5) a60 = b40

- 10 -

an is an arithmetic sequence and bn is geometric sequence. It is given that a40 = b40 > 0 and a60 = b60 > 0 Since we know that AM >= GM a50 = AM(a40 + a60) b50 = GM(b40 + b60) So, a50 > b50 => option (3)
21. Find the number of degrees in arc AB of the figure below if segments PA and PB are secants; m<AEC = 115, m<BFD = 130, and m<P = 30.

(1) 95 Solution:

(2) 120

(3) 145

(4) 80

(5) 105

Angle AEC=115. Suppose there is a point P in the major segment of chord AC. AECP will be a cyclic quadrilateral. Therefore , Angle AEC + Angle APC =180 ==> Angle APC= 65 ==> Angle AOC=130 (Measure of arc AC at the centre O) Similarly Angle BOD = 100 Therefore, Angle AOB (or measure of arc AB) + Angle COD (or measure of arc CD)= 360 - (100+130) = 130 ---- (1) Now we know the theorem that if there are two secants PA and PB and P lies outside the circle , then Angle P = 1/2 ( measure of arc COD - measure of arc AOB) =30 (given in the ques) -- (2) ==> ( measure of arc CD - measure of arc AB) =60 -- (3) U can see that equations (1) and (3) are simultaneous equations in measure of arc AB and measure of arc CD . So, finally measure of arc AB is (130+60)/2 = 95

22. From a stone cube with the volume of 512 dm3 a small rectangular solid was cut off, as seen in the picture. What is the total surface area of the remaining solid?

(1) 468 dm2 determined Solution:

(2) 320 dm2

(3) 336 dm2

(4) 384 dm2

(5) cannot be

If u observe nicely then u will find that the surface area will remain same for this new figure as it was for the original cube. let the side of the cube be a. now volume = a^3 = 512 so, a = 8, hence surface area = 6*a^2 = 384 => option (4)
23. In how many non-empty subsets of {1, 2, 3, , 12} is the sum of largest element and smallest element equal to 13? (1) 1024 (2) 1175 (3) 1365 (4) 1785 (5) 4095 Solution:

When min and maximum elements are 1 and 12 there is 2^10 = 1024 such subsets possible because there are 10 numbers between 1 and 12. when min and maximum elements are 2 and 11 there is 2^8 such subsets possible. so total subsets where sum of the largest element and smallest element is 13 = 2^10 + 2^8 + 2^6 +...........2^3+ 2^2+ 2^0 = 1024 + 256 + 64 + 16 +4 + 1 = 1365 => option (3)
24. A square tin sheet of 12 inches is converted into a box with open top in the following steps: The sheet is placed horizontally. Then, equal sized squares each of side x inches are cut from the four corners of the sheet. Finally, the four resulting sides are bent vertically upwards in the shape of a box. If x is an integer, then what value of x maximizes the volume of the box? (1) 3 Solution: (2) 4 (3) 1 (4) 2 (5) 6

Volume ; V = (12 - 2x)^2 * x = 4x^3 - 48 x^2 + 144x for maxm. or min. dV/dx = 0; => 144+12x^2-96x = 0 => x=2 or x= 6 - 12 -

At x=2 volume is maximum as at x=6 volume will be 0. => option (4)

25. An exam has 30 multiple-choice problems. A contestant who answers p questions correctly and q incorrectly (and does not answer 30 - p - q questions) gets a score of 30 + 4p - q. A contestant scores N > 80. The knowledge of N is sufficient to deduce how many questions the contestant scored correctly. That is not true for any score M satisfying 80 < M < N. Then N is (1) 103 114 Solution: (2) 112 (3) 108 (4) 119 (5)

According to question 4 marks are for correct answer , -1 for wrong answer and no marks for unattempted question. 30 + 4p - q = N or p = ( N-30+q ) / 4 now take N=114 , p = 21 and q=0 (rest 9 are unattempted questions)satisfies and p = 22 and q = 4 satisfies. So here knowledge of N is not sufficient to tell how many questions were answered correctly. but at N=119 , only p =23 and q = 3 satisfies. So N = 119. => option (4)
26. If three positive real numbers x, y, z satisfy y-x = z-y and xyz = 9, then the minimum possible value of y is (1) 3 Solution: Let the numbers be y-d, y, y+d => y(y^2-d^2) = 9 => y is max when d = 0 and hence x=y=z. Option (b) (2) 32/3 (3) 31/3 (4) 1 (5) none of these

27. Points A and B are placed on a line which connects the midpoints of two opposite sides of a square with side of 6 cm (see the figure). When you draw lines from A and B to two opposite vertices, you divide the square in three parts of equal area. What is the length of segment AB? (1) 3.0 cm (2) 23 cm (3) 3.6 cm (4) 4.0 cm(5) 4.5 cm

(3) 49

(4) 16

(5) 35

Case 1 : when only one 1 is used at odd places (i.e. a1 =1) rest all the odd digits are 0, then only one 1 can be used in any of the even places that can be done in 4C1 ways = 4 ways. Case 2: when there is two 1's in odd places and two 1's at even places then. as a1 = 1 always; the other 1 can come at any remaining 3 places in 3C1 ways and two 1's can come in even places in 4C2 ways so total = 3C1*4C2 = 18 ways. Case 3 : when there is three 1's in odd places and three 1's at even places then. as a1 = 1 always; total ways here = 3C2*4C3 = 12 ways Case 4 : when there is four 1's in odd places and four 1's at even places then 1 way. Hence total = 4+18+12+1 = 35 => option (5)
29. A washer man can wash 6 trousers or 8 shirts in 1 hour while his wife can wash 6 trousers or 8 shirts in 2 hours. The couple gets a work of 160 trousers and 200 shirts to wash. The man and the woman work on alternate hours and for a total of 12 hours daily. Every morning except the first the lady starts the work. If the couple worked for only 5 hours on the first day with the man starting the work at noon, then (a) the man finishes the work on 7th day (b) the woman finishes the work on 6th day (c) the man finishes the work on 8th day (d) the woman finishes the work on 8th day (e) none of these Solution:

In one hour man washes 6 trousers or 8 shirts. And in one hour woman washes 3 trousers or 4 shirts. let both of them work alternate hours and first finish washing the shirts they finish it on the 4th day and is completed by man after both have worked for 2 hours each. - 14 -

This u can calculate as noting the fact that if u take a 2 hour time span they end up washing 12 shirts. so on first day they wash 8*3+4*2 =32 shirts. on the second day = 12 *6 = 72 go on in the same way. Now they start washing trousers alternately; by the end of 6th day : they wash 16*6 + 16*3 = 144 trousers they are left with 16 shirts . on the seventh day woman starts washing 1st hour she washes 3 trousers 2nd hour man washes 6 trousers now seven trousers left. woman again washes 3 trousers and then man finishes the work of washing the rest 4 trousers => option (a)
30. Each side of an equilateral triangle subtends an angle of 60 at the top of a tower h m high located at the centre of the triangle. If s is the length of each side of the triangle, then (1) s2 = 3h2 3h2 Solution: (2) 3s2 = 2h2 (3) 3s2 = h2 (4) s2 = 2h2 (5) 2s2 =

Since each side of the triangle subtends 60 degree at the top of the tower hence the triangle ABC formed is also an equilateral triangle. AO=h; BO = (2/3)* (altitude of the equilateral triangle BCD) = (2/3)* (v3/2)*s = s/v3 now in triangle AOB; AO^2+BO^2 = AB^2 => (s/v3) ^2 + h^2 = s^2 => 3*h^2 = 2 *s ^2 => option (5)
DIRECTIONS for Questions 31 and 32: Each question is followed by two statements X and Y. Answer each question using the following instruction: Choose 1 Choose 2 Choose 3 Choose 4 Choose 5 if the question can be answered by X only if the question can be answered by Y only if the question can be answered by either X or Y if the question can be answered by both X and Y if the question can be answered by neither X and Y

31. Vineet has 9 crayons in a box. From every 4 crayons at least two are of the same color, and from every 5 crayons at most three are of the same color. How many blue crayons are in this box? (X) At least one of them is blue (Y) At least one of them is red, yellow, green each Solution:

Given,there are 9 crayons Since, there can be at max 3 crayons of same colour out of every 5, so same coloured crayons cannot be more than 3. Now, if we take 2 crayons of 1 colour,3 crayons each of another 2 colours and 1 more - 15 -

crayon of another colour,then condition 1 gets violated.(for example,lets have 3G,3R,2Y and 1B crayons....then if we 1 crayon each from the 4 different colours,d condition that there should be atleast 2 crayons of same colour out of every4 gets violated) So, we should have 3 crayons of 1 color and total we should have crayons of 3 colors Now, take X atleast one of them is blue...so we can say that there are 3 blue crayons take Y- atleast 1 each of Red, Green, yellow...so actually we have 3 crayons each of Red, green and yellow and therefore 0 blue crayons. => option (3)
32. A family has only one kid. The father says after n years, my age will be 4 times the age of my kid. The mother says after n years, my age will be 3 times that of my kid. Which of the following statements can answer the combined ages of parents after n years? (X) The age difference between the parents is 10 years (Y) After n years the kid is going to be twice as old as she is now Solution:

let age of the kid after n years be x then age of father after n years is 4x and that of mother is 3x years. now the age difference will remain constant always and given that (X) 4x-3x = 10 => x = 10. after n years the combined ages of parents will be 7x =70 years
(Y) => k = n => F+M+2n = 14n => option (3)
