V-5 Variable Displacement Compressors

Description:
The first volume-produced variable displacement compressor, the five-piston V-5 automatically adjusts displacement to match the vehicles air conditioning demand. A control valve in the V-5s rear head senses evaporator load and automatically changes displacement to match that load.

Typical Application:
The V-5 is readily adaptable to numerous OEM applications, both in passenger vehicles and trucks. It is currently applied to both Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) and Orifice Tube (OT) systems. Various V-5 displacement models are available, up to 156 cc

maximum, variable down to 10 cc, through adjustments in the wobble plate angle. Special options available on the V-5 include: a high-speed mechanical destroker; drive belt protection (thermal fuse); multiple pulley and clutch configurations (Single Groove, Poly-Vee); various protection switches; various control valve settings; a high-pressure relief valve; various porting configurations (rear port, side port, various seal types); various mounting configurations (ear mount and direct mount).

Performance Advantages:
Unlike cycling clutch AC systems, the V-5s continuous displacement feature results in smooth, continuous compressor operation without any clutch cycling, improving dehumidification and fuel economy.
