Chinese Characters
Learn & Remember 2,178 Characters
and Their Meanings
Alan Hoenig, PhD
• Co-op available
• Author’s previous books sold more than 10,000 copies
A systematic, building block-style plan for mastering the most
daunting aspect of learning Chinese—how to remember the mean-
ing of more than 2,000 of the most common characters—is pro-
vided in this handbook. Beginning with the simplest of strokes,
such as those for numbers, scepter, and earth, and progressing to
the extremely complex, such as destroy, insert, and mouse, this
manual presents a methodology employing memory techniques to
associate meanings with the characters’ visual components. A
sequence of numbered panels displays each character in two font
styles, and a notation in the adjacent margin describes the charac-
ter’s pinyin pronunciation. Graphics that identify the components
or characters from which the featured characters are drawn, a list-
ing of both the names of these root components, and the panel
numbers that cite their location in the book augment the presenta-
tion. Beginners will be best served by using this guide in conjunc-
tion with the development of language skills, while those who are
familiar with the language will find this book to be a comprehen-
sive reference and refresher.

of the City University of New York. He is the author of Finite
Mathematics and TeX Unbound. He lives in New York City.

As much a tribute to these legendary campers as a collection of outdoor-friendly recipes, this cookbook features instructions for more
than 80 delicious dishes paired with shots of vintage VW campers ranging from a 1958 Westfalia and a 1969 kombi to a 1959 23-win-
dow samba and a 1979 pop top. Designed to be prepared in a variety of rustic settings with minimal utensils, the recipes are organized
by soups and salads, light bites, main courses, filling seafood, BBQ, and sweets, and include dishes such as Tuscany bean soup, avocado
salad, Skagen sandwich, flaming beef stroganoff, fast wok noodles, spicy lime grilled prawns, baked bananas, pancakes, and hot cinna-
mon apples. True aficionados will be delighted by the cookbook’s special holiday recipe for making a Christmas-themed gingerbread
bus. A handy utensils icon on each spread identifies the tools required to make the dishes. In keeping with the cookbook’s global con-
tents, some recipes feature international measurements (gram, liter, and rasher), others identify traditional American measurements
(tablespoon, teaspoon, and cup), and some cite those universally understood (a can, a pinch, and a slab).

Featuring an insightful look at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-
gender (LGBT) life in Cuba, this chronicle illuminates the
progress the country has made from centuries of backward atti-
tudes and oppression to the current state of enlightenment. From
the mores of the Colonial period to the roles that Hollywood, the
CIA, and Wall Street played in depicting Cuba as a “police state”
for gays and in reinforcing the oppression, this overview provides
a backdrop of the past and illustrates the persecution and
exploitation originally planted by Spanish colonialism and fur-
ther cultivated by U.S. capitalism. Details on the gradual transfor-
mation follow as the narrative examines the impact of the
political and institutional initiatives taken by Fidel Castro and
the Cuban leadership to overcome bigotry and prejudice against
LGBT people—among them free health care and education, guar-
anteed jobs and housing, special health care for AIDS victims,
and widespread sex education.
Leslie Feinberg is the author of Drag King Dreams, Stone Butch
Blues, Trans Liberation, and Transgender Warriors. She was
named one of the 15 most influential people in the battle for gay
and lesbian rights by Curve magazine and is also a winner of the
ALA Gay and Lesbian Literature Award, the Firecracker
Alternative Book Award for nonfiction, and the Lambda Literary
Award. She lives in New York City.

So it is not difficult to understand why homosexuality,

Things Parents Can Do:
✧ After a tough game, say “Hang in there, we’ll figure it out.” We is a powerful word that will let your child
know you are there to help and they do not have to figure out the lack of success on their own.
✧ Always point out little signs of improvement, even if it is not showing up in game results.
✧ Stay positive and try something helpful. Having the player perform some basic fundamental drills at home or
at the field can show immediate results. Look up some drills in books, videos, or online to give the player some
constructive things to work on. The player’s coach can provide a few drills to help the player too.
✧ It is difficult for parents to have much empathy for their upset child when the young player did not practice
and prepare much. Some players have yet to connect the idea that results only come with hard work. Be delicate
about how you say things, but explain to the player that better results will come when he or she puts greater
preparation into it. For players who did prepare, tell them good results will come soon and you are proud of their
hard work.
✧ Have your child get help from a knowledgeable or professional instructor. Knowledge creates confidence,
which creates success and a happier player. For younger players, parents should attend the instructional sessions
to learn what to work on with their sons or daughters.
