The Wolfes Den
Hello to you all once again. It seems like most everyone I know of had an enjoyable Labor day weekend. There wasnt much in the way of bad or disturbing news from the weekend so that is a welcome sign from within Walton county. Im sure most of you have heard of the problems involving Syria lately. How let down do you feel as an American that we have not done anything to enforce the global treaty agreement? Seriously, all the delays have given them time to move around their operations and plans to cause grave devastation around the world. In my years as growing up our presidential person seemed to hold a strong stance and a firm fist about our rights and ways. I could name a few but you get the point. Didnt we strike fast to show the seriousness we will fight and win? Now, it appears that they are making deals with the devil in hopes that we dont get attacked for being the strongest military nation on the planet. If you havent noticed, we are hated for our ways and our beliefs, that all of the world needs to be democratic or something. Our country has lost its power and control of peace throughout the world. They show videos everyday the lack of respect they have against the USA. Its only going to escalate. When I served in the Air Force, I swore to uphold our commanders orders and would be willing to fight for my life if necessary. As many have died so far in the battle fields. As the Obama administration tries to prod Congress into backing armed action against Syria, the regime in Damascus is hiding military hardware and shifting troops out of bases into civilian areas. Politically, President Bashar Assad has gone on the offensive, warning in a rare interview with Western media that any military action against Syria could spark a regional war. If the U.S. undertakes missile strikes, Assad's reaction could have a major effect on the trajectory of Syria's civil war. Neighboring countries could get dragged into a wider conflict, or it could be back to business as usual for a crisis that has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people over 2 years. The main Western-backed opposition group says that during the buildup last week to what seemed like an imminent U.S. attack, the army moved troops as well as rocket launchers, artillery and other heavy weapons into residential neighborhoods in cities nationwide. Three Damascus residents, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, confirmed such movements. One man said two members of the elite Republican Guards broke into an empty house he owns and showed him an official document stating they were authorized to do so because Syria is at war. A woman in another area said soldiers moved into a school next to her house. A U.S. official confirmed there are indications that the Syrian regime is taking steps to move some of its military equipment and bolster protection for defense facilities. "The Syrian regime knows there are 30-40 potential targets for U.S. airstrikes, and they have had ample time to prepare," said Hisham Jaber, a retired Lebanese army general and director of the Middle East Center for Studies and Political Research in Beirut. "Half of them, if not more, have been evacuated, moved or camouflaged. This is the natural thing to do." Obama said last week that he believes the U.S. should strike Syria for what the administration says was a deadly chemical weapons attack by Assad's forces on rebel-held suburbs of Damascus. The administration has stressed, however, that any operation would be limited and not aimed at tipping the balance of power in Syria's civil war. The regime has a range of options if the U.S. does bomb. It could retaliate with rockets against U.S. allies in the region. It could unleash allies like Hezbollah against Western targets abroad. Or it could do nothing and score propaganda points by portraying itself as victim of U.S. aggression. More than likely they will do both. Blame us for attacking them as they will continue to find ways to destroy America. That is the goal of several countries around the world. I know this is disturbing but it is the reality that is going on now.even today. It is very disappointing to see that our leader has not been anything that he acted like before he became president. There is so much in disarray right now. Our country needs help and with the man at the wheel acting disheveled that doesnt help me sleep better at night. What about you? Lets pray for our children, to see what is going on and what changes will need to be made in order for us to continue living our American dream. The schools need to shape children for our future, get real and be forthright with them. They may have a great idea.

Walton Special Projects Coordinator Larry Jones, now County Administrator, presented information to the commissioners at their recent meeting on condominium solid waste collection. This after a request by the Walton County Taxpayers Association, who said the condo residents were not being treated equally as the garbage tax ordinance allows for.
While a tax pays for residential garbage pickup in Walton County, it does not pay for commercial pickup. This means Walton has not been paying for collection at condominiums, even though there are full time residents who live there. The condo garbage is usually placed Prodded on the issue by Sen. Kerry also assured lawmakers wary of giving their explicit green light to military strikes against Syria that Obama is not asking America to go to war. The result is Waste Management will bill the county $11.93 per condo unit unless it is cheaper for a set of units. Jones also asked that the contracts with Waste Management by put on notice to not automatically renew so the county can negotiate. Walton also wants to negotiate a long term agreement for collection and disposal. Commissioner Comander agreed, saying they need to have a workshop on the landfill so they know what they need to negotiate. Jones said the landfill is a valuable asset. Commissioners approved the requests. Suzanne Harris, with Edgewater, thanked the commissioners and Jones for working with them and helping to resolve the problem.
BACKGROUND: Google and independent research firm, Ipsos, analyzed the online strength of local small businesses across all fifty states. They weighed a variety of factors to determine the leading cities and towns across the US, including the likelihood of small businesses to have a website, use a blog, promote themselves on a social network, sell goods directly from their webpages and whether they had a mobile-friendly website. The winning cities exhibited strong engagement and potential for growth within the digital economy. For more information visit www.google.com/ecities.

A quick switch to mellow music in the car may make you a safer driver, researchers say. Promptly changing to soothing music is the most effective way to calm down while driving in stressful conditions that could trigger road rage, found the study published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal Ergonomics. It was already known that music can influence mood and driving styles. More accidents occur when drivers listen to "upbeat" music, possibly because the music is more distracting or because it causes drivers to go faster. Downbeat music is more relaxing and associated with safer driving. However, there were questions about whether a quick or gradual switch from upbeat to downbeat music was most effective in changing drivers' moods. To get answers, researchers had volunteers tackle demanding driving conditions in a simulator while they listened to different types of music. Participants who switched to more mellow music abruptly or gradually both reached the same levels of calmness eventually. However, those who made the switch quickly became calm sooner and made fewer driving mistakes, according to a journal news release. The results show that "during highdemand driving, abrupt changes in music led to more physiological calmness and improved driving performance and were thus safer and more effective, The investigators said their findings could also apply to office or hospital settings to encourage or relax listeners. Other risks include feeling dizzy or lightheaded upon standing, decreases in white blood cells (which can be fatal), or trouble swallowing. Tell your doctor if you experience any of these. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor about all prescription and nonprescription medicines you are taking. Also tell your doctor if you have or have had low white blood cell count, seizures, abnormal thyroid tests, high prolactin levels, heart or liver problems, or cataracts. An eye exam for cataracts is recommended at the beginning of treatment and every 6 months thereafter.

To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an "extreme high," or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. If you're still living with symptoms of bipolar disorder, you should know that many people with the condition are able to manage their symptoms. Feeling better often involves a combination of education, medication, and therapy, including psychotherapy, or "talk therapy." Psychotherapy (also called talk therapy) can make it easier for patients and families to better cope with disturbing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors associated with bipolar disorder. Talk therapy focuses on several important aspects of bipolar disorder management, including:
Inspect your water heater for signs of leaking fittings and corrosion or rust.
Recognition of and treatment for recurrent mood episodes Management of stress, interpersonal/family issues, and regularity of daily activities Development of problem-solving skills Psychotherapy can be used in combination with medication and other treatment approaches. Antidepressants have increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in some children, teenagers, and young adults. Patients of all ages starting treatment should be watched closely for worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or actions, unusual changes in behavior, agitation, and irritability. Patients, families, and caregivers should pay close attention to any changes, especially sudden changes in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. This is very important when an antidepressant medicine is started or when the dose is changed. These symptoms should be reported immediately to the doctor. Tell your doctor about any movements you cannot control in your face, tongue, or other body parts, as they may be signs of a serious condition called tardive dyskinesia (TD). TD may not go away,

Around 7pm Wednesday, a 1999 Jeep Wrangler stolen from Miramar Beach, was parked in a parking space in front of the Chevron Gas Station at 979 State Road 20 in Freeport. A Crown Vic patrol vehicle, driven by Walton County Deputy Marjorie Ginell King, was parked at a gas pump in the same parking lot behind the Jeep. The deputy noticed the stolen vehicle and was waiting on backup when the other driver got into the Jeep. The deputy got into her vehicle and pulled in behind the Jeep and parked. As she did so, the Jeep began to roll back and its driver got out and fled on foot allowing the Jeep to continue to roll back. The rear of the Jeep collided with the left drivers door of the deputys car at she was attempting to exit causing injury to her left shoulder. Deputy King suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from Sacred Heart Hospital in Walton County. A perimeter was set up by patrol and K9 started a track. The Sheriffs Office Mobile Command Post responded as well as the Aviation Unit and Marine Unit to aide in the search efforts. After 4 hours, 22-year-old Steven Ryan Ritchie, of Eric Drive, Bonaire, GA. was arrested at 10:38 pm on State Hwy 20, Freeport. He is charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving a scene of an accident with injuries, resisting arrest with violence and grand theft auto.

From Alaqua Animal Rescue Dear Frank, Ive been writing these pieces every week for the past 4 years, and feel that people are much more interested in using facebook as their information source on Alaqua than they are the newspapers. Couple that with the fact that papers (mainly the Walton Sun) dont always choose to include my articles in their publications, and I question the value of my time and effort on behalf of the animals. I want to thank you for your continued support all these years, and wish you the best with The Emerald Star News. *We will miss you as part of being with the Emerald Star News. The DeFuniak Springs City budget for next year is balanced and they will not dip into reserves for non-reserve use. The budget, as presented so far, has no increase in millage. The Council met in their final workshop and the largest part of the discussion was on the fire services agreement with the county. There are still two public hearings in September. With DeFuniak Springs adjoining the Liberty and Argyle Volunteer Fire Districts, the three have mutual aid agreements. Anytime there is a structure fire, dispatch calls out the district of the structure and the two surrounding districts. While all firefighters have to have a professional level of certification, many in the volunteer districts do not always have the level needed for entering a burning building. Firefighters with level one can go into a burning building only when they are with the higher certified firefighter. This need for backing up is why Walton will continue to fund part of DeFuniak Springs budget for another year. The need to help the neighboring districts was explained to the council. The DeFuniak Springs Council said next budget year they might need to talk with the two volunteer districts about help with funding. The Council was told the two districts assist DeFuniak Springs as much as they can with trucks and manpower. It was stressed that all three work together. By the end of the meeting the Council said the budget is balanced, the millage rate will not be increased and they will not dip into reserves. The reserves will be used, but the money will only go to the spending the reserves are designed for. Reserves are usually kept to assure a fund balance that will help with credit, provides a cushion in case of an emergency such as storms or large equipment failure and to help with future growth and equipment needs. Some purchases that meet these requirements were moved from being funded by the general revenue to reserves. While the reserves are being used, they are not being used as a loan for the general budget as has been done in the past. City Manager Sara Bowers said it was the late 90s since the city last balanced the budget without using the reserves.

The second half of the week is about looking at the details in your relationships. You're in a ruminative mood at week's start, thinking about the relationships you have in your life. On Wednesday, if you find yourself thinking about friendships, loves and family members who have come and gone, give them (and yourself) a break by reserving judgment and realizing that there are always multiple versions of the truth. Being so adult about matters of the heart makes you feel more like yourself On Monday you realize that there's a big difference between taking action and reacting. Thursday, September 5, 2013 On Saturday, September 14th, 2013 MakeA-Wish of Central and Northern Florida will be hosting a Wish Granting Training Session in Pensacola. The training class will be from 9:30am-2:00pm. Make-AWish grants the wishes of children with life threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. We currently have children in Pensacola and surrounding cities that are waiting to have their wishes granted. This training session will teach the volunteers how to determine the childs one true wish, different wish granting techniques, policies & guidelines and how to grant the actual wish. Wish Granters team up in pairs and work directly with the children and their families to make these wishes come true. These specially trained volunteers make the wish an unforgettable experience through creativity and imagination. Wish Granters volunteer their time around their own schedule and traditionally requires one hour per week. Ideal wish granters have great communication, commitment and are very patient. You must be 21 or older to participate. To register for the class, R.S.V.P for the location or other volunteer opportunities, please contact Stephanie Smith at 407.622.4673 x201 or e-mail ssmith@wishcentral.org. Since 1994, Make-A-Wish of Central and Northern Florida has granted more than 4,000 wishes, inspiring children, volunteers, and others to believe in the power of a wish. Make-A-Wish was founded in 1980 in Phoenix, AZ, has a network of more than 25,000 volunteers, and has completed more than 250,000 wishes worldwide.
Thursday the Walton County Sheriffs Office Deputies responded to a disturbance call on Chestnut Street. Resulting from the disturbance, Aaron Michael Miller, the primary resident, was charged with Simple Assault and Felon in Possession of Ammunition. While on scene, deputies observed several items conducive with the manufacture of methamphetamine. The Walton County Sheriffs Office Vice/Narcotics Unit was notified and a search warrant was obtained for the residence. Upon the execution of the search warrant, several items used in the manufacture of methamphetamine were located along with an excess of 200 grams of methamphetamine oil. Aaron Michael Miller subsequently received additional charges including Trafficking in Methamphetamine (Over 200 grams), Manufacture of Methamphetamine and Possession of Narcotics Equipment and transported to the Walton County Jail.
Last Thursday morning, about 20 people stood in front of the Walton County Courthouse, holding signs in support of stopping animal abuse. They were calling for justice in a case of animal cruelty involving Crystal Sue Esquibel. On March 3, 2013 an investigation by the Walton County Sheriffs Office (WCSO) began on Four Mile Road in Freeport. Deputies were at the home for an unrelated matter when deputies observed 6 horses that appeared to be in poor health. On March 4th, deputies returned with a vet and animal control officers to assess the conditions of the horses. Four of the horses were immediately removed and transported to Alaqua Animal Refuge. Investigators then began to look further into the maltreatment of the horses, as well as other animals present at the residence. On March 7th, authorities removed the other two horses, four puppies and one piglet. Two arrests were made during the animal abuse investigation. Crystal Sue Esquibel, 27, and James Richard Holzapfel III, 37, were charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty, a third degree felony. All of the horses and the piglet were transported and treated at Alaqua Animal Refuge. The puppies were taken to the Walton County Animal Shelter for treatment. Protest Organizer Stacy Bishop has been following the case. She says she can not stand to see an animal get abused. Bishop says the animals cant help it and cant talk and people who can not take care of them should ask for help. She says she knows times are hard and the economy is down, but feels they have to stand up for animals. Bishop says Esquibel was trying to sell the horses, try to make money. Esquibel came before Walton Circuit Judge Kelvin Wells Thursday morning. The case is continued until September 3rd. Click this link to go to the video and pics: http:// youtu.be/wJJe7uc2wps
