NEXT MEETING SEPTEMBER 10th, Evening Meeting 6PM

Rons presentation featured many stunning visuals that attempted to describe the importance and place of astronomy and space in our everyday lives. He began by showing several pieces of art and photographs that contained parts of our solar system in them including g the moon, the sun, Venus and other planets, other stars and the constellation Aries. He illustrated that Van Goghs painting Starry Night was an actual depiction th of the sky painted on a specific date June 20 , 1889 at 4AM.

Program: Steven Day, Alameda County Diving Team Forensic Diving

We are meeting in our normal room, ORINDA ROOM

Greeter & Invocation. FRANK MAY
He went on to describe other interesting celestial-related events in the world today including the Glacier Point Firefall and Horsetail Falls sunlight event at Yosemite and a Manhattanhenge sunset event in New York City. Ron described the need for people to have a sense of their place in the universe. He showed illustrations of Light sources at night in the United States The sheer size of the African Continent in relation to the other parts of the world. Graphs of the limited amounts of water and air on our planet. Images of our planet from the moon, An image of the earth and the moon from a satellite Picture of a sunset on Mars Pictures of earth from Saturn and Mercury Ron then went on to describe stars and planets that are outside of our immediate solar system. There are perhaps one half a trillion stars and ten times that number of planets. In a recent study a satellite reached out some 3000 light years into the Milky Way which is 100 thousand light years in size. In this study 4451 planets were identified of which some sixteen percent are earthlike. In other words, the likelihood of other life in the universe is quite high. Stars are born, they grow and they die. There is nothing new under the sun!! All in all, a wonderful presentation by a great speaker.
