Activity 4: Measuring Heart Rate

Accurately
Each time the heartbeats, blood is pumped
into the arteries. As the blood moves into
the arteries during a heartbeat, each
artery stretches and bulges. This bulge is
called a pulse.
To feel the pulse, find the artery in your
partners wrist. Place the tips of the first
two fingers of one hand on the palm side
of your partners wrist, over toward the
thumb side of his or her wrist. Dont use
your thumb to feel the pulse in the wrist
because your thumb has a pulse of its
own.
You will be measuring heart rate by
counting the number of pulses in the artery
in the wrist in a 30 second interval. To
measure heart rate, count the number of
pulses in 30 seconds. Multiply that number by 2, and you will have the number of beats
per minute.
Example: During a 30 second interval, I felt 28 pulses in my partners wrist.
28 pulses x 2 = 56 beats per minute
Test You Accuracy:
1. Place your first 2 fingers of your left hand over your right wrist.
2. Count how many pulses you feel in 30 seconds.
3. Write your 30 second pulse rate below:
____________ beats per 30 seconds
4. Use the equation below to determine your beats per minute:
_______ beats per 30 seconds x 2 = ________ beats per minute
Reflection Questions:
1. Why do you need to have a heart?
_____________________________________________________________
2. Does your heart always beat at the same rate? _______________________
3. List some activities that you think may increase a persons heart rate:
_____________________________________________________________
