PRECAST CONCRETE & SUSTAINABILITY

Precast concrete can contribute to sustainable design in many ways. It is a versatile and durable material thanks to its low water-cement ratio. It is produced in a factory by trained personnel with virtually no waste, under stringent quality control measures, which helps reduce construction waste and debris on site. Precast elements can be quickly erected on the jobsite with minimal disruption to the site and its thermal mass can save energy and increase comfort. It is also a long-lasting material that is noncombustible, providing natural fire control, and resistant to wind, hurricanes, and floods. It is nonorganic and cannot support mold growth.

INDIAN PRECAST CONCRETE BUILDING INDUSTRY

Precast building construction industry is still at its nascent stage in India. It is rapidly coming to the forefront of the construction industry because of long-term market prospects. Currently precast is being used predominately in residential housing projects and low-rise commercial projects. Specific products within the broad categories of precast concrete production include lightweight and aerated concrete blocks, precast concrete tiles, precast cladding and structural products for residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Products that will fare particularly well include foundations, walls and floors. Growth will also be spurred by the rising use of architectural products like decorative faades, door and window frames and roofing tiles. The Indian construction industry's drive towards sustainable development should also benefit this sector, due to the high levels of recycled materials used, and precast concrete's high thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
