Examples of implemented projects

Engage and include! - Batman YouthBank YouthBank team in Batman usually chooses the projects that engage and support the members of the local community, people being in poor economic condition and young people with disabilities. In September team has implemented the project in cooperation with Yeiltepe ATOM (Yeiltepe Multifunctional Community Center). The arts and crafts workshops were organized between 2 and 7 September for the young women beneting from the ATOM services. The travel expenses of the professional trainers and artists who facilitated workshops were covered from the YB grant. Prepared arts and crafts were presented and put on sale during the charity sale on 8th of September. The incomes gained from the sale were spent to support the families in poor economic conditions and to cover the school expenses of one young woman. Another project aiming at engaging young disabled people and creating the space to socialize with peers started recently. The young people together participate in cotton thread jewelry workshops organized in the Batman Youth and Culture Center. Apart from learning, staying together and making bracelets and necklaces from cotton thread very popular among young people, young people become more emphatic and aware of the problems of disabled young people. Workshops have started on 13th of November and take place twice a week. Arrange your future! - Kavack YouthBank Pink House YouthBank from Istanbuls Kavacik district decided to support young people willing to enter university. Institute for Arranging the Future is coaching program prepared by the team of 3 young sociology graduates. During the ve-week long workshops the topics such as concentration techniques, setting the goals and motivation were discussed. Every week the participants had two meetings, workshops with whole group and face to face consultation with the coach. The project comes to the end at the beginning of December with the closing event organized to celebrate the participants achievements. The project gained recognition from the local municipalities and the future cooperation and implementation of the project in different locations is discussed. Another eld in which the Pink House YB supports the young people is art. The group of young people interested in Improvisation Theater decided to apply for the funding from YB to learn more about the concept and develop their own play. The group planned to watch 4 different improvisation plays of different theater groups and organized meetings and workshops to discuss the concept leading nally to the creation of their own play. Theater project group received a lot of support from the professional theaters. English Speaking Club and Dance Course two projects of Seluk YouthBank Seluk YouthBank (Seluk/Izmir) is currently implementing two sustainable projects. Having convenient ofce which became the youth center, place of meeting for young people from Selcuk, the YB team supported two long-term projects: English Conversation Club and Latin Dance Workshops. The idea of the rst project was presented to the YB team by Burak Turfan. What is the biggest difculty for the young people studying English? I understand but I cant speak is one of the most common complain.

most common complain. Burak proposed organizing speaking club. Facilitated by the procient English speaker, 2hour English workshops take place once a week. Only 7 people participated in the rst workshops but later on many young people join the workshops and currently around 20 young people (age range from 15 to 25) participate in the activity. The Latin dance project was designed by Serdar Durmuolu. Although there is quite signicant group of young people interested in Latin dances there is no dance school or even dance course in Selcuk. The dance teacher was found and at the moment, every Saturday youth from Selcuk can participate in the dance workshops. Youth On Air - Atakum YouthBank / Samsun Atakum YouthBank was presented with the project of internet radio. The aim of the project is to give the young people necessary knowledge and skills to create and broadcast their own internet radio programs. By developing their programs, making interviews with artists they will increase their self-condence and become more aware of their choices in the eld of art and culture The idea of organizing grafti and break-dance workshops with mentally disabled students of Zafer Special Education School submitted to the Atakum YB gained its full support and was implemented at the end of October. Volunteers rst explained how to make grafti and later together with children they started painting the walls of their school. Creating their own grafti, holding the spray paints in their hands, watching and trying to dance hip-hop and break-dance gave the children a lot of joy. The whole group had a lot of fun working, dancing and joking together. The workshops nished but the grafti paintings still welcome the children every day when they enter the school. "Painted Hands" The project implemented by Ksa Dalga YouthBank in Istanbul was presented to the team by the Boyal Eller grafti team (Painted hands), grafti group created by young people. The group has already gained recognition of the local municipalities and has decorated with grafti many public places. This time the group wanted to paint together with children grafti inside of orphanage in Eyup. Most of the children staying in this institution are between 6 and 12 years old and are separated from their families because of the poor economic condition. The aim was organize grafti workshops for children and by involving them in all process paint the inside courtyard of the orphanage. The orphanage authorities welcomed the idea and prepared the wall for painting grafti. Two-day project was implemented on 22 and 23 of September. Because of the delicacy of the situation

and protection of the identity of the children, only YB members and project team participated in the event. Over 50 children (age range 7 12) living in the orphanage, most of them staying there because of very bad economical condition of their families, painted the colorful grafti on the wall surrounding the inside garden. The activity got the appreciation from the careers that joined the children. Everybody had a chance to use the spray paint, paint the wall and got some useful tips from young grafti artists. Creating the painting together, having an opportunity to redecorate the space they live in gave the children a lot of joy. As one of the volunteers said, We decided to implement the project to give a little bit of happiness. In the aftermath of the project, the YB representatives and Painted Hands team participated in the local radio program where they talked about the project. Volunteers declared further cooperation with the orphanage. GO Project - Seluk YouthBank Seluk is a town with a population around 28 000. There are not many places for young people to socialize. The idea of Go project was brought to the YouthBank in Seluk by three high school students looking for a way to enjoy, socialize and develop skills at the same time. They were interested in strategic games and already played chess when they learned about the Go. Go is strategic game that originated in China more than 2500 years ago, known and played in the Asia and Middle East. Game very popular in the past was almost forgotten in the town, as only one elderly man remember playing it in his childhood. Students learned that in Izmir exists the association promoting the game and decided to submit project to the YB to get the grant for spreading and promoting game in Seluk as a way of bringing together young people.

Project team invited the Glin akr, Trker zekerli, Yukari Yasuda and Gl Ylmaz from the GO Association to present the game with history and philosophy. 15 young people participated in the workshops organized in Seluk and learned rules of the game. After the workshops the group of young people participated in the GO Days event organized in Izmir by GO Association. Workshops were followed by meetings organized in Seluk by the young players. The group is growing as more and more young people are attracted by the game. The project team stays in touch GO Association and participate in their GO events. The group is planning to participate in the national GO tournament which will take place in Izmir in February and to promote the game further by organizing workshops in high schools in Seluk. As one of the player, Umut comment: At the beginning I thought its a little bit boring but after I had learned the rules and started playing I was amazed. I realized how useful it is in my daily life. After I started playing I became more successful at school. I want to understand and get to know better the people Im playing with. Somehow I can communicate better with my friends and family now. Short movies in Batman and Samsun Young people from Batman and Samsun in order to socialize and develop their skills in the sphere of art decided to implement two projects on short movie-making. Volunteers from Samsun received the support of the Atakum YouthBank team to shoot two short movies raising

awareness of the society about the visually and hearing impaired people. The idea was created by Mustafa who is a student of special education department. Short movies are his hobby that is why he decided to prepare the script and bring it to the YouthBank. He wanted to target the lack of sensitivity that disabled people face in the society. With the grant received he organized the team of volunteers who helped him to make two short and very touchy videos. Shooting took place in the public transportation in Atakum attracting attention of the people who became a part of the project. The short movies Understanding and Silence and darkness were shown though social media and presented in the ne Delii Youth Center. YouthBank from Batman granted the short movie workshops in Batman. Young people see the short-videos as a tool which helps them express the way they see the world and their lives. Haydar Demirta and ner ztrk, two moviemakers from Mardin worked with the volunteers during the 4day workshops, starting from presenting the movie art, through creating the script and nishing with shooting the short movie on the basis of it. 15 young people participated in workshops and worked together on making the movie. The result of the workshop was shared in the social media. The workshops raised the interest of young people in the eld of art. The activity gained a lot of interest and was reported by the local press more photos on:

Besides, we did personal interviews with adult-beneciaries at the middle and at the end of the project. During the eld visits we interviewed the young-beneciaries, the beneciaries and the adult-beneciaries. Our main concern was to evaluate the impact that YB made on local areas and in general, as well as the feedback concerning the sustainability of the project. Also we tried to see the impact of the project in the perceptions of the adult-beneciaries At the end, we saw that all the objectives of YB Program, as well as many positive side effects, was fully accomplished. In all the domains we researched; we detected improved skills and sensibility. We can say that YB Turkey contributed greatly to the process of creating young people who have active role in their local communities. about working with young people (and vice versa). comprehend (qualitatively) the change/the impact/the improvement in the local areas; on the perception of future (the vision); the perception of youth and youth work as both theoretical concepts and quotidian practices; the motivation and the ability of doing projects concerning the issues of the society and especially of the young society; the perception of different age groups about working with each other; the personal and social skills; and the sensibility about the society.

The process of the monitoring and who took part in the Youth Bank Program. evaluating aimed at dening not only the (We did not always quoted from the process but also the outcomes and the participants but we benetted from their words as well as the monitoring process and the personal interviews in order to paraphrase their understanding) (The promoter youngsters (the coordinating team) will be referred as beneciaries. The project maker youngsters will be referred as youngbeneciaries. The staff working in the institutions that youth bankers have cooperated with, will be referred as adult-beneciaries) In order to get non-written data, we monitored the youth bankers during the process while they were implementing their projects. In addition, we made two tests to beneciaries; pre-test (appendix 1) was applied in January 2012 (at the beginning of the project) and the mid-test (appendix 2) was applied in August 2012 (at the middle of the project). To make a comparison between pre-test and midtest some questions are in common. We made also interviews in december 2012 and january 2013 (at the end of the project) while doing eld visits. Also, we change of all the people who took part in YB, by either using or paraphrasing their words. The tests were designed to

Personal experiences
The summary of the personal experiences of the beneciaries. (mid-test) Instructive, joyful, motivating. Efcient enough. Trainings are good. I gained particular information that I cannot get by money in business life or in other areas. The information that we gained from trainings support our locals. New friends. Idea sharing about what we do but others do not and what they do but we do not. It is quite fun to make social responsibility projects with my fellows. During YouthBank process, I realized problems around me by the help of my fellows. Responsibility. Self-condence. To begin with I learnt to be a team member and its responsibilities. Team work. Projects. Project checking. We are beginners, we could not promote it well, and we were not that successful. Some fellows tried to pretend like leaders but it damaged our teamwork. But I am active. Conicts in team. Delays. Breaking away from the team.

condence, entrepreneurship, coherence, patience, tolerance for differences. It was good to work in small groups and be interested in details. I met new people (ideas, perspectives) and teams. Good friendships have been grounded. Personal ideas have been shared therefore we met new points of views. We learnt how to work in a team, got rid of our individuality. We got the opportunity to think about possible problems and proposed solutions. We began to work in an NGO. I got informed about project and related subjects. I

During YouthBank process, I realized problems around me by the help of my fellows

learnt how to write, manage and evaluate a project. The questions in our minds about YouthBank project have been answered. Practices, material usage, funny techniques, warm environment, simulation of project were good. We met entire project team so it was good as well. Negative sides of training according to the

beneciaries. (pre-test) There was none. The time was not sufcient in compare to the density of the program. We did not have enough free time. The number of participants was too many. It was tiring therefore boring time to time. Sometimes it was boring and inefcient for some who had already participated in YouthBank project (last year) and experienced it in the eld. Trainers did not intervene in speech duration or expression styles of the participants. It was hard to listen and understand the trainer that does not speak Turkish. It was not exactly a peer training model. The effect of the training on project process. (mid-test) We had already learnt everything, learnt YouthBank there at the training. Friendship environment. Egalitarian environment. Chance to know the other groups. It motivated us to see foreign YB examples. I am more self-condent now. It facilitated the things that seemed hard. Logic of project writing. Project evaluation. It helped to think in details. Remembering our erstwhile knowledge was useful. I feel like Im a gain for society.

Motivation of the beneciaries on making new projects. (mid-test)

%75 Yes %10 No %15 if the team comes together again, Yes To summarize briey, we could say that the project in general was very effective and the ones who took part actively still have the motivation to continue. Even though some had inevitable problems, they want to deal with those and move on to new projects.

The Training
Positive sides of training according to the beneciaries. (pre-test) We felt precious and lucky as youngsters. We realized our prejudices; we met/knew better ourselves. Motivation, courage, social sensitivity and curiosity have increased. We developed such skills as communication, use of body language, ability of giving a speech in community, self-

Perception on working with others

According to beneciaries, effect of YouthBank project on the ideas on working with different institutions and organizations. (mid-test) I overcame my bias a little bit. I got different ideas in a positive way. People can trust in youngsters. They are helpful. They support us without asking anything in return. It is hard to get permission for something but they lean to us. Bureaucracy is a barrier. We feel moral support from them but we have to push them for material support. There are adults who do not take youngsters seriously. (Some are in signicant positions) Some have prejudices because of appearance.

To make youngsters understand the project and include them in decision making processes are main reasons to motivate in order to make them take responsibility. To make them understand the project clearly and to include them in decision making processes make the young people motivated and enhances their feelings of belonging. More they own the project, more they support the youth workers in the processes of decision making. More you treat them as equals, more they become honest. There is in this life something called youth honesty. When you give them freedom, they become more motivated. When they are not supported they might quit the project. Instead of making them do something, supporting them while they are doing something is better. I observed that when they are supported the right way they do good things and they have a healthy process. Young people who are taking part in YB are eager about the public/civil place. Unfortunately they are raised in Turkey in accordance with the general/traditional perception of young. They were not listened by others. Other people made decisions for them. This mistake effects the youth. But the right way to support make them free and original.

According to beneciaries, effect of Youth Bank project on their ideas on working with youngsters (young beneciaries). (mid-test) Some problems are easier to solve. The idea that they can create awareness and change. They are stubborn about what they want. They have different point of views. There are so many different young people and every one of them has their own way to communicate.knowledge was useful. I feel like Im a gain for society.

According to adult-beneciaries, effect of YouthBank project on the ideas on working with youngsters. (mid-test) Difculty to tell high school age youngsters about what social responsibility is. They start to realize what is going on around them and what the problems are around. The idea of creating more opportunities for youngsters who especially live in small towns and cities.

I observed that when they are supported the right way they do good things and they have a healthy process

16

The Prots
According to adult-beneciaries, the prots of the youngsters whom they worked with. (mid-test) Increase of self-condence. They became more active (both in private and public areas). They feel more important in their local and community. Ability to deal with people coming from different backgrounds To take responsibility They are more open-minded Raise of conscious of social responsibility They stay more loyal than before to their appointments To determine goals and do planning To become a part of the team They express themselves better. Their writing skills have improved. (ex: writing a petition, making an interview) They understood that it is not necessarily to be friends in order to work together. Their level of tolerance to each other has changed. To become a part of decision-making processes. They have learnt by experiencing that there is no difference between being an adult and being a youngster in contrast with youths negative sense on adultness. The experience in the eld contributes to the improvement of youth workers and of youth in general. In addition, this experience will help them conduct better projects in their local areas. The fact that they get acquainted with voluntarism and youth work might be considered as a sign of future entrance to these areas. They have better approach and spirit in order to work with youngsters in their local areas and they have more developed information and materials in order to support this process. According to adult beneciaries, their own prots at the end of Youth Bank project. (mid-test) I learned a lot about working with young and teenage people. Different young people from different locals have different needs. I understand better the needs of young people. I can support them with proper methods according to their needs. Not only the young people but also the teenagers. I saw again that they need a proper environment to improve themselves. Then they might achieve lots of things. According to beneciaries, the prots of youngbeneciaries (mid-test) Information about YB. Project writing. Sociability. Team work. Tolerance.

They fullled their needs in their locals and they contended with themselves. They have the right of speech in their locals. They demand the right of speech. The feeling of success. Self-condence. Entrepreneurship. Will. The will to see the problems in their environment and the will to solve them (life is not anymore limited to a couple of friends in a cafe). Sensibility, the change in the way of living.

According to beneciaries, their own prots (mid-test) Contributed a lot. We remembered that we were young. We noticed that we can do something about youth. I learned the problems of young people in my village. We saw that we also have a right to speak. We are more conscious. We can resist some things (that we used to override). To have responsibility. To realize a project. To evaluate a project. To work according to a plan. Every new project means to learn about a new subject. To communicate the right way. I learned to listen. We have learned what to be a team means. I saw how the conicts in a team progress. We did YB at hard times. Instead of quitting we supported the team. I learned to work with young people. Early on, could not abide my peers. Self-condence. Entrepreneurship. I learned to talk in community. Education doesnt have to be like it is in school. I am trying to use in my life quotidian what i have learned in training (prejudices, social media...).

17

PRE-TEST & MD-TEST (comparison)

We made the pre-test in january and the mid-test in august. We now present them comparatively. Due to the conditions, pre-test was given at the end of the training. Therefore we could say that the beneciaries were very motivated and were starting to get acquainted with lots of new concepts. If the test was given before the training, then we could observe better their rst position in the sense of understanding. And only then, the differences between the mid-test would make more sense. The pre-test were lled by the beneciaries in their homes and sent by internet. So they had more than sufcient time to think about ant to beautify their answers. But this choice created a disadvantage for us; only half of them sent us the form back. So we wanted them to ll the mid-test as hardcopies during the meeting in august. Because of this, we think that they were less serious compared to the mid-test; they gave less time to think about and to ll the form. But we believe that we compensated our methodological mistake by doing interviews right after the mid-test. Instead of an oral-examlike interview which interrogates if their pre-test answers were still valid, we tried to focus on their experiences and their priorities of that day. We have to claim that the decrease of answers (in terms of quantity of lines) during the mid-period is not only related to the scarcity of experiences (most of the projects hadnt started yet), but more likely to the excess of hopes and expectations at the beginning of the project. Regarding our situation, what we think what logical is not to evaluate the answers by their quantity, but to consider their on-going motivation. Also we tried to understand if the answers included concreteness instead of utopic fantasies, and if they included personal action plan or not.

Implementing a Project
Prociency on implementing a project (pre-test) We are procient enough to conduct a project. We learned a lot. Thanks to the training we learned most important points about implementing a project. The focus on youth is an advantage for us because we ourselves are young. We trust team work and our team. We have to act responsible and we have to be transparent. We are ready socially. We can communicate and coordinate but the writing and documenting process might be hard. We are motivated and ready to motivate others. We are more sensible about social issues. We want to meet different people and are eager to work for a common meaningful aim. As long as we are supported and get more experience, we would like to improve ourselves and realize sustainable projects. Prociency on implementing a project (mid-test) Self-condence. Information from the training and experience from the practice of taking part in projects. I have experience on project planning and programming. I can think a few steps ahead. Its not only prociency in a general sense. They noticed specic abilities about themselves. I am good in idea creating. I am experienced about teamwork (from the TOG experience). I am good at communication and use of internet (from personal experience). I can lead the team. I can listen and understand. I have a better sense of responsibility. We are open for learning.

It was at the mid-point of the YB project. Some team members had quit and some teams were scattered. Therefore the motivation was a bit low. Then, we thought that their abilities would enhance by time as long as the teams get stronger and the projects come to life. At the end of the year we conrmed that our foresights were true.

18

Youth Work
What does a youth worker do? (pre-test) He stands beside the oppressed, has a liberalistic position. He struggles and lobbies for the youth rights. He observes and makes analyses. He contributes to his local. He helps the youth make useful deeds in their region. He guides others while they are writing and implementing projects. He tries to be creative and original. He makes researches, decides on themes, makes the project active and visible, he works for its sustainability. He deeds for youth. He doesnt have to be young. The important thing is he has to communicate with youth. He works together with young people. He approaches the problems from the youths point of view. He listens to youths problems and ideas. Instead of acting restrictive and commanding, he tries to constitute a sense responsibility. He proves/shows the youths power. He encourages. He makes youth feel valuable. He supports youths improvement on personal, social and educational matters. He creates awareness not only for youth but for everyone. He increases sensibility by his work. He guides the change in society. He works not only for youth but for good order of society. He ignores his own personal interests. He gives his heart to his work. Hes eager and volunteer to anything. His mood and motivation is always up. He does everything he can.

He is open-minded. Hes not stubborn about his own ideas. He has to see the problems that youngsters dont notice. He has to suggest solutions. He thinks innovatively. He tries to solve problems within the team. He raises awareness; (His own (the interviewees) knowledge about concepts like prejudice etc. Is enhanced. He got specic information about what does some foundations do). He does what the project requires. He has to be young. He sacrices himself for youth. He is ready to help whenever hes needed. We are procient enough to conduct a project.

During YouthBank process, I realized problems around me by the help of my fellows

Even though there still exists some answers as he sacrices himself for youth, we can say that the utopic character who is fullled with huge concepts and incredible powers has become more realistic. It is obvious that they didnt have an experience as deep, as various, as rich, as efcient as they hoped it would be. Nonetheless, their starting points and main approach (in accordance with youths problems, needs and wills, with youth) is very pleasing. Although, we must claim that concrete information and examples about what they hoped 8 months ago, references to their tangible practices lack in their answers. Nevertheless, we could say that, even though their experience was fainter than they expected, they use words that come from their experience, that are their own (like the focus on solving the problems within the team, like the word prejudice (and others) that they use quite often in their everyday life, like new information they got about ngos presence and works). We can conclude that they seem to be placing the youth worker in a big yet realistic picture which is indeed a sign of a broader way of seeing and understanding about the subject.

Implementing a Project
What does a youth worker do? (mid-test) He must work in accordance with youths problems, needs and wills. Projects, workshops. He works for youth. He works with youth. He helps youth do projects. He supports self-condence in youth. He gives special attention to those who abstain from talking, who doesnt consider themselves as individuals. He has to know the feelings and needs of youth.

19

Effect on the community

According to beneciaries, their effect on their community/ society (pre-test) More sensibility to my community. I share my experience with youth, try to help them help themselves improve their self-condence. I try to motivate them. I raise awareness, induce prejudices. I do not still silent in the face of bothering, unfair, unjust situations. I try make connections with young people who are interested in hip-hop culture, try to help them (make music, arrange a studio). Organization of youth in order to build a youth center. I sometimes have a bad effect. I try to be helpful as much as I can in every subject. I try to be an example with my way of life to my community. I try to motivate my community to education and volunteer work. I am a youth bank volunteer: I try to motivate and organize the young people in my neighborhood to determine issues in the district and to make projects in accordance.

We can say that at the pre-test not only realistic and concrete experiences/effects but also utopic wishes and false ideas were present in the answers (I raise awareness, induce prejudices, I try to be helpful as much as I can in every subject ). Now the emphasis is changed; instead of talking about making youth heard by some unspecied people, they are talking about making youth heard by each other. What is aimed by YB (sensibility, awareness), nds concrete areas of possibilities through concepts like gender, teamwork, prejudice, equality in concrete target groups as family, friends, district people/community

According to beneciaries, their effect on their community/ society (mid-test) We dont have much effect. We didnt realize a project yet. I try to share what I learned at training with others around me. Things that can be useful to society, awareness. We can detect more easily the problems around us. We used to be insensitive, we were not paying attention. I try to prevent my brother from the mistakes I made. I try to prevent him from loosing time. Even though a small amount, awareness in my friends. I introduce in their vocabulary words/concepts like equality between man and women, prejudice, ngo I try to raise awareness about gender issues. As a person who experienced a team membership (sharing ideas, working together), I try to be an example to my friends. I try to satisfy the needs of young people in my district as much as I can. I try to increase the communication within the youth. I try to increase the self-condence in youth.

We can detect more easily the problems around us. We used to be insensitive

20

Life Goals
Beneciaries goals in the future time (pre-test) To study abroad To have a master degree To graduate from university To study philosophy To get promoted at a job I like To become a cook and run a restaurant in London To become a computer engineer To become an architect To do EVS To travel To take photo To bike To become a local/city governor I want to draw and make animation To become a writer at a comic magazine, to publish my own book To become a musician To work globally in music area To work and live with people I like To nance my family To spread voluntarism To make projects voluntarily in 3rd world countries Youth studies, to become a youth worker, any activity regarding youth To work at TOG To work for societys good To make my children go to GEM To create opportunities for Turkish youngsters To change my close environment To raise awareness, to abolish concepts like prejudice, discrimination To contribute in social good by my life-style To create environmentally-sensitive projects To bring together youngsters in my local under the roof of a well-organized and active youth council. Beneciaries goals in the future time (mid-test)Prociency on implementing a project (pre-test) To travel To live alone To settle down in Kelebekler Adas (Butteries Island) To become a skydiver To be interested in cinema University A proper job To escape from this damned country and live in Europe in a middle-class way. To serve to public

A society where different races can exist together Gender equally society Less prejudiced society Working at NGOs To become a youth-worker To work at TOG To realize good projects at local level and maintain YB Project To remain as YB member, not to leave this group

The title of YB has entered into the life goals that revolve around social responsibility. Senseless wishes like bringing awareness to the community or stopping prejudices and discrimination have ceased. Instead, there is a modest understanding of reality which is accepted as it is and there is a pursuit of possible ways of not eradicating but beautifying it.

Beneciaries feedbacks on sustainability of the YB project. (mid-test) Cooperation with Education Ministry. More amount of budget. Being more selective and attentive while gathering a group. Coming together more often. Once or twice year organizing a Reunion in order to share knowledge amongst all members.

FINAL EVALUATION
Samsun Contribution to the district
The fact that young people can do something gives them self-condence. We showed that art in this district is possible. Street art for the rst time. A different, original work. Happiness. We did a sustainable thing. I improved myself. The people i have worked with has improved. We did a job of good quality with a small amount of means. It was good for those who listen to good music. It was not just a fancy. In time, the process will settle down and continue. We triggered creativity. Technical information for some people. We worked not only with people from our town, but also out of town. Some needs were fullled. Young people who realized their ideas is itself the biggest contribution. Young people do not only become friends but also gain many abilities. Even though all the members of the rst team is not present, the ones who joined later on want to stay and take part. In the local area, the youth has felt that they are heeded. Youth felt valuable. Self-condence. Self-esteem. Entrepreneurship. Possibility, support, option to those who have ideas, who are excited but lack direction and framework. Not only locally but also globally; awareness about social and physical disabilities. We are not alone. Motivation for sustainability. Acquaintance with concepts like youth, environment, disability, rights... With the support of the coordination team; ability to implement a project. New young people who problematize the youth. Team work with friends. Project writing and running. Solidarity. Opportunity of meaningful action for youth. Problematizing the local issues. Youth has self-condence. They are happy. They have the right to speak in the society.

Motivation for sustainability. It is a big city. The contribution was made to local district. Self-condence has risen thanks to the good examples. Young people are bringing concrete solution options to concrete problems instead of gabbing away. It is wonderful to meet new people. They took responsibility. They experienced success. They have motivation to become widespread. Meeting important people like the mayor.

Samsun Change in adults perception of youth and of working with youth

They were already open-minded. Mutual contribution. They take the youth more seriously. Not competition but cooperation. The important thing is not the name but the purpose of the institution. Youth can work together not only individually. Young people has realized their ideas in the given possibilities/circumstances. It helped to change some wrong prejudices as youth get bored quickly, they start something and quit easily. My prejudices have diminished. I am volunteer to work together. The adults are not only givers but also takers. Youth has something to give. I dont support mere ideas but they have a backgroung and a plan; so i support and encourage them. Trust to youth. Youth doesnt only screw around, they do not only wander about. They have things to say and they have the right to speak. I consider them as family. I was doubtful at rst. Because i had bad experiences before; i met young who broke their promises, i met irresponsible young people. I told them not to dream. But in time, when i met new young people, when i saw their determination, when i saw the continuity, my ideas have changed. The institutions have understood their own mistakes. The better/wiser thing is to ask what they want to do instead of commanding them: do this, do that. The projects can be made not only with high school kids but also with the young people in the street. Street kids have also potential. They would hadult on to the project and give their time.

Young people has realized their ideas in the given possibilities

22

zmir/Seluk Contribution to the district

We talked English. We danced. We watched and discussed about movies. Some young people were not very fond of their city. They could not socilialise, their freedom was restricted. But they beautied their district; not only for themselves but also for the young people who might experience similar problems in the future. The perception of young people has changed. Youngsters are more conscious. Self-condence. Entrepreneurship. They are interested in new games. They dance. They meet regularly and realize the actions they want. Their circle of friend is extended. Their friendships are stronger. Meaningful time instead of just wandering around. Socialization. Youngsters who plan their lives. Youngsters who are more aware of themselves and of their own capabilities. More friends. Beautiful friendships. Openness to learning. Meaningful occupation/struggle. Youngsters play games. Meeting new and different people. In the youth center, we have more fun than we do in a bar. I learned how to dance. I started to go out (of the house). It was a small town without any action. Now there are events. Openness to ideas. Openness to everyone. Youngsters who take responsibility, who spend meaningful but also amusing time together. Young people support each other. Less prejudices. Youngsters have things to say and they have right to speak. Acquaintances of people with common interests. A broader perspective. The fact of implementing the project, as well as its content make people learn lots of things. Ability to speak English. Conversation around a variety of subjects. Therefore acquaintanceship with new topics, information and new ideas. Opportunity to practice for those who are interested in dance. Learning about working together. The feeling of trust. I am serious; i can laugh with young people. There was an interaction; the nervous kid enjoys more and the irresponsible work seriously.

zmir/Seluk Change in adults perception of youth and of working with youth

They work well even though they are not leaded. Its enough if we only listen to them, but really listen to what they say, their needs and complaints. Then we give them our support. We ask ourselves what we can do for them, how we can communicate. We ask more concretely and we give answers. Adults trust the youngsters instead of saying youngsters can not do, youngsters are incapable. Adults have noticed that youngsters exist. Learning that youngsters realize concrete actions by taking responsibility. Youngsters can also be altruistic. They are not always selsh. They care for and help others. Youngsters do projects that are both useful and fun. Adults are more willing to give permission to go out do things. Adults are surprised. They are happy and eager to support. Youngsters do not only dream but also realize those dreams. They take action. It might be fun to work together. They are conscious and can achieve things. Youngsters are not only hedonists. Trust and proud.

Batman Contribution to the district

We gained recognition (also in social media). Our projects are good references. The contribution was mainly to young people in Batman. They became active. Especially the community of those who took part in YB was effected.

Learning about working together

Acquaintanceship with the concept voluntarism. I was shy and silent but i changed, i socialized, i became active, i made friends. Contribution to the education of youngsters. Some became popular. The conscious that when complaints become

projects, they become meaningful. Opportunity to go out for the youngsters with disabilities. They have felt that they are included. Good relationship between youth and press. Recognition. Socialization and self-condence. My elocution has improved. I made friends. Ideas can become real if we work together. Active youth. Youngsters believe: can succeed. I can make a

Batman Change in adults perception of youth and of working with youth

Adults used to say there is no need. Youth attracted their attention. Adults say: you do not only kill time, you go to the activities. Adults dont say anymore are you going to save the youth?, did you become a man now?. It is a slight change because it is new. Adults used to say: youngsters are only consumers, why do you gather, arent your resources enough for you?. Mistrust decreased. There have been adults who volunteered. The more they took part of the projects, the more their trust and condence have increased. Youngsters have proved themselves. Adults are more ready/comfortable to work with youth together.

stanbul Eyp Contribution to the district

Young people communicate with young people. They exchange ideas. Young people get to know themselves (better). They notice their tendencies. They share their hobbies. There is not only an economic support but also a moral support. The effects can be discussed but it is obviously better than nothing. Information sharing between different teams from different local areas motivates, inspires and encourages. The contribution was not made to the district but to the people and especially young people living in that district. Team work. Self-condence. Responsibility. Will power. Communication between youth and different institutions (craftsman etc). Selshness is decreased. Thoughts are freer. Social awareness about different socio-economic classes. Youth is interested in politics. We learned that nobody should be undermined. The girl who was sitting quietly at the back of the class wrote a project. Togetherness instead of shyness. Economic and moral support. The judgment that it is possible if we are together. Its a good reason to go out. I noticed the possibilities of action. An opportunity to challenge myself. I fear less adult people. The perception that adults despise the youth is weakened. A new perception: not only for myself but also for others. We achieved something together and we are happy.

Artvin Arhavi Contribution to the district

Self-condence. I can more easily speak my mind. People are more conscious. Youth has become visible. Socialization. Pleasure of having done something good for someone. Proof that change/beauty is possible even in this small town. Being a team. I can share my ideas. Self-esteem. New friendships between different age groups. Youth has visited different towns and met with different people.

Artvin Arhavi Change in adults perception of youth and of working with youth
Trust. Youth can be interested in important things. So called useless people can achieve things. Carelessness has decreased. Some things change. Some things can be changed. The major communicates with youth. More respect. Youths communicative quality is discovered. Young people can also be responsible people.

Face to face communication within the youth is straightened.

stanbul Eyp Change in adults perception of youth and of working with youth
Adults care more about youth. Adults are surprised. They noticed that youth is not useless. Adults experienced that the potential they were talking about became real. Curiosity about youth. Young people have approached us. We do not only give ideas and advises but we take them.

24

stanbul Kavack Contribution to the district

We played in plays. We improvised. We did theater. We got to know our city better. We had a good team. We have better ideas about how to implement projects. We became friends and more. I learned how to work systematically. I learned how to react in crisis situations. We used the opportunity to realize dreams. Belief in the possibility of change.

Increase the recognition. There has to be lots of projects in order to create opportunity to become active. Straighten the team. Distribute the duties. Respect within the group is very important. Regular attendance is important. Even though some say its impossible, continue to believe and work. Distribution of duties is essential. Heed each other. Respect different ideas. Look for the solutions together. First, meet well. Then, promote well. New projects without a rest. Regular idea sharing and meetings. Continue to give good trainings. While introducing the program, the time and responsibility it requires must be mentioned. They should not do it with mere individual motivation. Come if you want to do something. Work with not only the youth from universities but also with youth from high schools and also with youth who dont go to school. YB gets stronger as much as you involve different institutions, craftsman, artisans and those who occupy important positions. Each young has to be approached in a specic way. A wild soul is not an obstacle. Dare and pursue. Team work.

stanbul Kavack Change in adults perception of youth and of working with youth
Adults who used to say they do lots of things for youth, now ask themselves if they really satisfy the needs of youth, if their deeds really are utile for youth, if their deeds really are proper for youths conditions, if their deeds really are reachable by the youth. There has been awareness around these subjects. Adults leave the leading to youth and are contented with supporting.

Suggestions for sustainability

The team you work with is important. Self-condence is essential. Even though there is no support, you have to motivate yourself. No matter what they say, you have to keep trying. Run after your ideas. Even though the change is small, try to realize it. The team is necessary. Continue, continue and continue to look for support. Organization. Planning. Those who can take responsibility, those who can give time should be part of YB. Discipline. Continuous communication. Working with not only young people from universities of big cities but also with other young people is awesome. Lets continue like this. The focus is not on advertisement of an institution but on the needs and wills and complaints of youth. This is good. Attention to the invitations for projects. Regular meetings. Leave your prejudices outside. You dont have to devote all of your time. Even though occasionally, come. Time planning with a specic focus on each district.

Adults leave the leading to youth and are contented with supporting

The focus is not at all at more money (as it used to be in early phases of the program). The basic suggestion for sustainability is to make attention to continuous communication and team work. All the participants seem watcful to each individual, believe in great potential of each one of them.

25

Change in life goals

My goals have altered. I am more interested in art. My perspective has broadened. I am going to get education. I want more education. I want to go to university. It was only about school and work. Now I want to make activities, contribute to society. It was school, family and kids. Now there is also society, being active and self improvement. I learned the concept of voluntarism.

New people. Different cultures. More responsibility. I gained sensibility. My dreams have less individuality. My fears are decreased. My perspective is broader. I believe in my potential. My dreams have become more realistic and measurable. I transformed my dreams into aims.

We can easily say that the life goals have changed in a positive way. The youth has more self-condence, want more education, is more responsible and sensible.

Conclusion
In the phase of constituting the teams, it is important to choose people whom are not only motivated but also informed. If not, it is important to inform them about how to implement a project, how much time and continuity YB requires and how hard it is. This way, abandoning the team would be lesser experienced. In the local areas, It is important for young people to have someone who can support them, in order to focus on specic local issues. Continuous support in the locals would be motivating, connective and effective, would inhibit the disadvantages of working with young people who have not much experience in project making. (These previous two comments are mainly based on the facts that in the rst half of the year many YB teams had to be reformed with new members and relatedly in many local districts almost

no projects were realized; but in the second half, when the team members knew their responsibilities better and when TOG have much better supported the youngsters with new recruited youth workers, YB was much more effective) We can say that the coordination team and the project teams are, out of necessity, working together. Therefore we can say that the organization schema, in which the coordination team funds and supports but do not implement the projects, is missing. Although, this situation has advantages; we can say that youngsters (from the coordination team) are having key roles in projects, help each other, become more responsible and sensible. Maybe the reason is not the right usage of money as expected, but this way the outcomes in the sense of acquiring qualities are even better. The supporters, the coordinators and the actual project makers are implementing the projects together

hand to hand. This situation feeds sociability, friendship and team work. We dont feel the need to make many comments because the contribution of YB to every local area at which it was practiced, as well as the change it enabled in adults perception of youth and of working with youth is obvious, if not enorme. Beside the specic impacts of the projects in accordance with their aims, the effect of YB program on selfimprovement of youth, on their selfcondence, on their abilities to work in a team, on their communication and citizenship skills, on their abilities to work with different institutions and different age groups, on their sense of responsibility, on their social sensibility, on their awareness of their own inuence to their community, on their life goals, on their prociency on Project writing and implementing, on their knowledge and motivation about youth work is highly satisable.
