2501 Olson Street Temple Hills, Maryland 20748 Social Studies Grade 6 Mrs. Kayla VanEgmond Course Description World Cultures and Geography is a two-year course that is covered in the sixth and seventh grades. Course Overview Unit 1 - Geography Unit 2 - US and Canada Unit 3 - Latin America Core Learning Goals By the end of the year, students will master the following skills: Reading and understanding western maps Challenging worldly misconceptions about Geographical themes Making connections between their lives and communities and themes of geography Explaining how environments shape people and people shape environments Expectations I have high expectations for ALL students, both academically and behaviorally. Students will meet the following expectations daily: Academic Expectations Scholars are expected to: Arrive to class on time and prepared each day. Turn in homework in the black bun at the very beginning of class, get out their journals, write the date and objective, and prepare for the warm up. Turn in a weekly newspaper article and analysis on Fridays. Participate in class discussions and complete projects on time. Behavior Expectations Within our classroom, each student will be responsible for his or her own work, attitude, actions and behavior. They will be held accountable for: 1. Keeping all cell phones silent and out of sight. 2. Keeping all food and drinks away in the classroom. 3. Being respectful of yourself and others, especially listening respectfully to teacher and peers. 4. Bringing binder and pen/pencil to class every day. 5. Remaining seated in their assigned seat unless told otherwise. 6. Staying focused and on topic, not chatting, bullying, or sleeping. Rewards Students will be participating in a classroom economy and will earn classroom bucks. Students can earn eagle bucks to use at the classroom store. Students can earn Classdojo points which improve their participation grade. Students must complete ALL requirements of an assignment in order to earn an A grade. If an assignment is incomplete or incorrect, students will earn a RE-DO and are expected to try again for additional credit. Follow all instructions and expectations for each assignment. Please note - report cards are issued four times a year. Individual items can be purchased at local office supply stores and/or from the AVID table at Back-to-School Night 2 August pens 28, 2013, from 6:00pm 8:00pm. 2 pencils on Late Work 36 Sleeve Protectors 8 Subject Dividers Students are expected to attend class every day, however when an absence is necessary, an EXCUSED note is required, allowing students to receive work, handouts, and notes that were missed during the absence. Students who do not complete in-class work will receive no credit (a 0 grade), no exceptions. Academic Integrity College preparedness is a school-wide goal and academic integrity holds great priority and impact on students academic maturation. Therefore, plagiarism will not be accepted. Students may not adopt or reproduce ideas, words, or statements of another person without appropriate acknowledgment. (This is the definition of plagiarism.)
