VIA ANAKENA CONTINUES TO STRENGHTEN ITS TEAM WITH THE APPOINTMENT OF REN VSQUEZ AS VITICULTURAL MANAGER
INTERVIEW WITH REN VSQUEZ:

Viticulturists must stop being Grape Growers and start being Wine Growers.
What is your impression of the Via Anakenas vineyards?
The best. They are planted in Chiles leading winegrowing valleys, at high density, and with the most suitable varieties for each site, so there is a great potential for producing high quality wines.

Given all of your experience in Alto Cachapoal, what do you think about the potential quality of this terroir?

Rene V a sque z , Viticul tural M anager

I think it is an outstanding location for producing fine wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon; the elegant, round tannins and the freshness of the grapes at harvest time demonstrate the privileged conditions here.

The Leyda Valley has become known as the best valley for cool-climate varieties. Do you agree?

That is indisputable if we use technical parameters such as degree days, cold index, and high and low temperatures, and also if we assess Chile for producing cool-climate varieties.

the performance of varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. From my perspective it is the greatest valley in all of

In addition to the vineyards in Alto Cachapoal and Leyda, what do you think of the other vineyards, Las Cabras in Peumo and La Isla in Colchagua?
They were a huge surpriseI had no idea they existed when I arrived, although I knew the potential for quality in other vineyards close by. No one in the country can deny the relationship between Carmenere and Peumothey are one in the same, and the greatest expression of green notes and well-rounded tannins. the variety is always associated with the Peumo D.O. Whenever Carmenere joins up with Peumo, I always think of fruity expression without The La Isla Vineyard, in the heart of the Colchagua Valley, clearly reflects its terroir in the Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe fruit and firm, potent tannins. The Syrah grown there shows soft tannins and a variety of black fruits such as blackberries and blueberries. And then there is Petit Verdot, a long-cycle variety that can provide complexity and depth for our red blends. Both vineyards have poor soils that require precision and attention to detail, especially in irrigation, to deliver highly concentrated, elegant fruit.

According to the winemaking team, good wines are born in the vineyard. What do you think about that?

As the years have gone by and Chile has matured as a producer of terroir-driven wines and improved its vineyard managementand by

that I mean strengthening the potential of each sites features rather than hiding or standardizing themthe general consensus is that the vineyard is practically everything. That makes it more important than ever that growers and winemakers work as a team; and, especially in the case of fine wines, viticulturists must stop being Grape Growers and start being Wine Growers.

Because of the diversity of climates, soils, and varieties that we can produce. And if we add plant health to the listbecause we dont have major problems as in other countriesthen we are clearly a paradise for crafting fine wines.

Why is it fair to say that Chile is a winegrowing and winemaking paradise?
