In our Parish Bullen some months ago, Fr. Andrew
wroteofhisneedfora holidaybecauseofredness;
physically and mentally. He wrote; the reason I am
redisfairlysimple;Iaminministry.
Although my emoonal work load as a Pastoral
Associate is minimal compared to the Parish Priest, I
thought I might share a reecon on a few hours in
my life some years ago and the physical and
emoonalchallengesitbrought.
IhadanearlymorningmeengatourlocalCouncil.
ItwasameengoftheEmployeeAssistanceProgram
Commiee. I helped establish the Program 25 years
ago and it is heartening that it is sll going strong. It
deals with employees who may have a problem in
their personal lives that is aecng their work
performance. The group are a friendly, caring group
and the meengs are always light hearted as we
banterwitheachother.However,thereisobviouslya
serious side to the meeng as we discuss employees
withproblemsandhowbesttohelpthesepeople.
My mood at this me was light and jovial and I was
a lile excited because I had some success with
people I was assisng and I was keen to tell the
group about it.

AmeengwasheldlastSaturdayintheChurchHallto
discuss the migrant and refugee dilemma, giving us
the opportunity to examine some of our atudes
toward these people in light of the ethics of the
situaon and, just as important for us, to measure
their treatment against Chrisan values. As Chrisans
we must always uphold the worth and the dignity of
everyhumanpersonandwearefurtherchallengedto
sharewhatwehavewiththoselessfortunate.
We were hopeful of having a worker from the
Detenon Centre in Nauru to speak to us but, in his
absence,hesentaheartrenderingleeroutliningthe
situaoninNauru.
Part of his leer describes his rst day at Nauru; I
assisted with an intake of new arrivals. The men had
arrivedfromChristmasIsland.Someofthemhadbeen
told they would be moving rooms, and then found
themselves deported to Nauru. Some were taken in
handcus. When the reality of the situaon hit them
they broke down and cried. It was one of the hardest
things Ive ever had to witness. Grown men losing
hopetearbytear.
Can we feel these peoples pain? Commenng on
public apathy Pope Francis recently said; The other
is no longer a sister orbrother to be loved, but simply
someone who disturbsmy life and my comfort. In this
globalised world, we have fallen into globalised
indierence.Wehavebecomeusedtothesueringof
others: it doesnt concern me; its none of my
business.

10th November beginning at 10:30am in the Parish
Hall. All members of the Parish are invited to aend
this Assembly and be involved in nalising the Parish

them to the Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council.

MidwaythroughthemeengIreceivedaphonecall.
A woman introduced herself. She was crying. Her
husband was in hospital and dying of cancer. She
wondered if I could come. I immediately le the
meengforthehospital,stoppingattheParishOce
topickupacopyofPrayersfortheDying.Arrivingat
thehospitalIfoundthe50yearoldmaninacoma,his
bed surrounded by his children, his wife and his
mother. All were very emoonal. I introduced myself
and we joined together to say the prayers. I spoke to
thefamily,reassuringthemthattheirlovedonewasin
no pain and would soon be with his loving Lord. I
askedthemtoconnuetotalktohim.Iexplainedthat
although he was in a coma, he knew they were there
and he knew that they loved him. I stayed with them
for 15 minutes and then had to leave for the Catholic
PrimarySchool.

My mood was now subdued. I was sad but the


adrenaline was pumping. These are the peak
moments in life when our barriers are down here in
these moments of powerlessness we can have
meaningful dialogue with people who otherwise may
be dicult to reach.

I checked in at the Oce. Some men were coming to


erect a new fence beside the church hall and needed
togainaccesstoelectricity.Wealsoneededtogetrid
ofsomerubbishbesidetheHall.Itsallabitmundane
but needed to be done. I set them up, then raced o
to the School for Job Interviews. We were
interviewingforaGrade2Teacher.Theapplicantshad
beenreviewedandwehaddecidedontwofor anal
interview.Eachinterviewlasted30minutes.

NowI needed to be in a more formal, interview type


mood. I lightened it up with some of my othecu
humour but I was now in a dierent space.

I returned to the Hospital to see a nurse carrying a


body slide into the mans room and I knew he had
died. I introduced myself as from the Catholic Church
andsheverykindlyallowedmeintotheroomandtold
me to take as much me as I liked. The family had
already gone and the man was in a body bag which
the nurse unzipped for me. She le the room and I
was alone with the man. I said the Prayers for the
Dead,wishedhimgoodbyeandle.

Again I was sad but again the adrenaline was


pumping. How privileged to be allowed to be a part
of someones life at these moments.

I reached for my mobile and rang the mans wife to
pass on my condolences and enquire if there was
I drove to the Primary School that his children
aendedandtoldthesadnewstotheteachersinthe
StaRoom.

There was shock and plenty of tears. I was feeling


emoonally drained..
It was now 12 noon and me for lunch.

Although such emoonally charged, roller coaster
daysarenotthenorm,theyneverthelessdooccurand
taketheirtollonourcopingmechanisms.Itisatthese
mes that we need to be sustained by our prayer life
and be supported by others in ministry and in our
community. It is at these mes that we need to be
good to ourselves, to recreate and recharge our
enthusiasmforthechallengesahead.

So that we might receive Communion in a t and

When we process forward to receive Communion,


we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
formofreverence,includingagenuecon,should
thereforebeavoided.
Communion by selfinncon (selfdipping) is
neverpermied,sincewereceiveCommunionand
never take Communion. Please refrain from this
inappropriateacon.
We regret that we do not have the physical
facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and
respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling to
receive Communion while part of the procession,
since this is contrary to the nature of the
Communion procession itself. Your cooperaon in
