Bishop Eugene Hurley, Bishop of Darwin, emailed
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposion leader

women.

Darwin.
Sadly, I have been involved with detenon centres

I experienced once again today, the suocang

another.
Iwasremindedofsomethingayoungmansaidtome
during one of my visits to Woomera, all those years
ago. I was saying something about freedom. He
replied, "Father, if freedom is all you have known,
then you have never known freedom.'' I sensed the
horrible truth of that statement again today."
I sit here at my desk with a heavy heart and a deep
and abiding sadness, that the leaders of the naon
that my father, as an immigrant, taught me to love
with a passion, have adopted such a brutal,
uncompassionate and immoral stance towards
refugees.
I imagine he would be embarrassed and saddened by
whathasoccurred.
It occurred to me today that neither the Prime

thesepeople.
Neither do the great Australian community.

So that we might receive Communion in a t and
properway,pleasebeawareofthefollowing:

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
formofreverence,includingagenuecon,should
thereforebeavoided.
Communion by selfinncon (selfdipping) is

We regret that we do not have the physical
