About Bamboo, the Giant Grass

Bamboo forest ecosystem. A dense, evergreen bamboo forest is a peaceful and magical place. As the wind bends the flexible bamboo, the poles clack and the leaves whisper. Bamboo has inspired human beings for millenia.
The fastest growing plant. Bamboo is not a tree, it is a giant grass. Some species grow four feet in one day! Bamboo reaches full height in one growth spurt of about two months. When bamboo is harvested, the root system is unharmed and healthy, ready to produce more shoots, just like a grass lawn. 1500 varieties. Bamboo grows naturally in the tropical world extending to temperate climates. Running bamboo spreads underground and pops up like a weed. Clumping bamboo is preferred because it remains in the area it is planted. 5000 uses. For thousands of years, bamboo has benefited people in Asia, Africa, South America: building materials with the strength of steel, furniture, weapons (first rocket was a bamboo tube stuffed with gunpowder), writing and musical instruments, fuel, food, medical products.
Bamboo for building. Some grows so large it is called timber bamboo- 120 feet high and 13" diameter. Thick bamboo poles are 2-3 times stronger than comparable size of wood timber. Bamboo can be harvested in 7 years versus 10-50 years for softwoods and hardwoods, yielding up to 20 times more than wood. One bamboo clump can produce 200 poles in the five years it takes one tree to reach maturity. Bamboo can be sustainably harvested and replenished with virtually no impact to the environment.
Grow your own home. It's a renewable resource for housing, flooring, paneling, fencing and more. In the tropics, it's possible to grow your own home. In Costa Rica, 1000 bamboo houses have been built annually from a 60 hectare (150 acre) plantation.

Bamboo's Role in Environmental Restoration

Our biosphere is suffering from resource depletion, habitat loss, species extinction and ecosystem pollution, suggesting sustainability is not enough. Architects and developers can now choose materials and systems that have a restorative effect on the environment. Bamboo can play a key role. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant. It produces greater biomass and 30% more oxygen than a hardwood forest on the same area, while improving watersheds, preventing erosion, restoring soil, providing sweet edible shoots and removing toxins from contaminated soil. Bamboo produces structural beams, flooring, wall paneling, fencing and many more sustainable by-products of environmental restoration.
Bamboo timber can be harvested every year after 7 years, compared to 30 to 50 years for trees. With 10-30% annual increase in biomass versus 2-5% for trees, bamboo can yield 20 times more timber than trees on the same area. Bamboo can be selectively harvested annually and regenerates without replanting. Bamboo generates 30% more oxygen than trees. It helps reduce carbon dioxide gases blamed for global warming. Some bamboo sequesters up to 12 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare, which makes it an efficient replenisher of fresh air. Bamboo is a natural water control barrier. Because of its wide spread root system and large canopy, bamboo greatly reduces rain run off, prevents massive soil erosion and keeps twice as much water in the watershed. Bamboo helps mitigate water pollution due to its high nitrogen consumption, making it a solution for excess nutrient uptake of waste water from manufacturing, livestock farming and sewage treatment. Bamboo can restore degraded lands. It is a pioneering plant and can be grown in soil damaged by overgrazing and poor agriculture. Proper harvesting does not kill the bamboo plant, so topsoil is held in place. Because of its dense litter on the forest floor it feeds topsoil, restoring healthy agricultural lands for generations to come.

Growing Bamboo in Maui

A promising new agricultural enterprise. Hawaii's sugar cane and pineapple industries are contracting, and the state is searching for new crops. Bamboo is an environmentally sound replacement to help preserve Hawaii's agricultural heritage.
Bamboo research centers and plantations are sprouting up in the Hawaiian Islands, especially on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. Whispering Winds Bamboo Farm (www.whisperingwindsbamboo.com) in Kipahulu, Maui, is part of a tropical hardwood reforestation project. The greenhouse, shadehouse and nursery propagate over 50 species of bamboo, including ornamental, timber and edible bamboo. Growers research which ones grow best in various ecological conditions.
The plantation has five acres, about 600 plants, interplanted with nitrogen fixing trees. Twenty acres are projected by the end of 2005. Products are nursery stock, edible shoots, ornamental bamboo and timber bamboo poles.

The Ancient Spirit of Bamboo

Symbolism. As an evergreen, bamboo is one of the "three friends of winter." Bamboo represents a strong but resilient character.1 Bamboo is quick-growing, high, straight, very strong, and evergreen. Therefore, the Chinese have compared "fair, straightforward, sincere people of high spiritual qualities" to bamboo since the ancient times.2 Garden. Bamboo is used in every traditional Chinese garden for its beauty, the rustling sound of its leaves in the breeze, and the feathery shadows it casts on walls of the garden.3 Traditional Oriental belief holds that a bamboo grove restores calmness and stimulates creativity. Bamboo groves were a favorite dwelling place of the Buddha. "Three friends of winter". Plum, pine and bamboo symbolize in East Asia the virtues of the ideal scholar, purity of spirit, longevity, and flexibility. The plum tree perseveres through winter, blossoming white afresh through the snow. The pine tree endures evergreen throughout the seasons, and bamboo, always green and flexible, bends in difficulty, but does not break.4 All Pervasiveness. The western world, including Australia, is not yet taking the spectacularly useful bamboo plant seriously, in spite of millions being spent on research in Asia. There, bamboos feed the people, house them, grace and shade their environment, provide musical instruments, cooking and eating utensils, furniture, hunting weapons, ceremonial artifacts, carrying and storage baskets, lampshades, ropes and strings, roof tiles, hats and hundreds of other practical and spiritual uses. Accordingly, the people show great reverence for this wonderful plant, which is the fastest growing renewable resource known.5 Chinese Character for Bamboo: The Appeal of Nothingness. Bamboo is the natural symbol of the wealth of nothingness because it grows into space, which for the masters of Zen represents the subtle centre of spiritual development. More generally it is a symbol of fertility, altruism and a happy family in the image of a mother plant feeding her family around her. The invention of the 8 trigrams in the YI KING (a sacred work in Asia) has been attributed to the legendary Fou-Hsi in 2900 B.C. The full strokes (YANG) and the separated strokes (YIN) suggest the stem of bamboo and its nodes. Growing and Harvesting Bamboo in Vietnam

Vietnam has an estimated 200,000 square miles of bamboo forests. After Vietnam was defoliated by Agent Orange in the American War, bamboo was the first species to begin regenerating the forests. Today, villagers in 29 provinces grow bamboo for domestic and export products. An important bamboo for construction timber is bambusa stenostachya, or "tre gai", a clumping bamboo. Much of the tre gai bamboo comes from villages in Central Vietnam. The tops of tre gai bamboo are used by chopstick factories, and the long, thick bottom poles usually ended up as scrap. Now Bamboo Technologies uses these sturdy, hard poles (10-14' long, 3"-4" diameter) to build houses. Bamboo growth cycle New bamboo clumps mature enough to grow full size poles in about three years. In one three month spurt bamboo shoots reach full diameter and height, more than 60 feet high. In three years poles mature into dense, hard bamboo. Harvesting bamboo at maturity is the critical first step to insure strong and durable quality poles. When bamboo poles reach peak strength and hardness, villagers in Central Vietnam harvest them. Bamboo clumps will grow new shoots for as many as 75 years.

Manufacturing Bamboo Houses - Pole Treatment
Poles are sorted, straightened, cleaned and sanded. Graded by length, diameter, strength. Straightened or curved over fire. Pole knobs are chipped off, then sanded.
Highest quality enviromentally sustainable borate treated bamboo poles. Vacuum pressure treatment uses ecologically friendly borates as a preservative, making poles resistant to beetles and termites. Poles are treated with a non-toxic, earth friendly, anti-mold fungicide. Final finishing coats are applied with clear or tinted water based acrylic. Manufacturing Bamboo Houses - House Panels
Prefabricated homes have many shapes: octagonal, rectangular, square or a custom combination. House frame, walls, floors, ceilings, cabinets, doors, beds and trim can all be made from bamboo. Exterior bamboo walls are overlaid with bamboo siding and interior walls have several decorative woven bamboo styles.
Panel Assembly Process: Bamboo poles for roof and wall frames are assembled, sanded, cleaned, and coated with preservatives. Steel connectors are inserted inside structural joints for hurricane and earthquake standards.

Manufacturing Bamboo Houses - Construction & Shipping
Each house is custom made to order and assembled at the factory following the Quality Control Manual for Engineered Bamboo Homes.
Basic House Package includes wall panels with exterior bamboo siding and interior woven bamboo finish. Roof panels overlaid with borate treated plywood. Door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, interior and exterior poles sanded, pressure treated and coated with preservatives. Optional covered porch extension package.
Each house is disassembled, packed in a container and shipped to Hawaii or USA mainland, where a qualified Bamboo Technologies crew assembles the house on site.

Assembling Bamboo Houses on the Home Site

After a home order is placed, building it in Vietnam and shipping to the USA may take six months or longer. This period allows the homeowner time to obtain permits and contract to build the platform and install electrical and plumbing. For building permits, blueprints from Bamboo Technologies are signed by an architect and an engineer. Owners provide building site and local building code information. The building permit fee and time required to obtain a building permit varies by jurisdiction.
The owner builds the platform, hiring licensed contractors, or doing it themselves. Permits are needed for plumbing, electrical and sewage system. Bamboo Technologies can provide blueprints for the platform and a material list with estimated costs. The bamboo house is assembled and weatherproof in 3 to 10 days. The owner contracts a technical supervisor qualified by Bamboo Technologies to come to the home site and direct the local contractor or the owner's construction crew. The owner installs the roof, doors, windows, electrical, plumbing, insulation, flooring, appliances and furniture. A bamboo floor adds a luxurious feeling. Bamboo Technologies will inspect the house for final compliance, to make sure every home is built to perfection.

Strong and Durable Bamboo Construction. Bamboo exceeds the strength of
construction wood by several times. It is durable, resilient and long-lasting.
Structural Bamboo Certification. ICC Evaluation Service Report ESR-1636 (Nov. 2004) states that Structural Bamboo Poles produced by Bamboo Technologies comply with the following codes: 2003 International Building Code (IBC), 2003 International Residental Code (IRC) and 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). Steel Reinforced Joints. To satisfy seismic and hurricane requirements of building codes, steel reinforced brace panels are used in specific locations of the building panels. The 1/4 inch thick steel plates are inserted, bolted and dressed with bamboo bolt covers. Brace panels are then bolted securely to wood or concrete foundations.
Houses are designed with 9 foot porch or 4 foot roof eaves to add weather protection and coolness. Hurricane braces embedded with steel plates are bolted together with the root (rhizome) section of the bamboo stalk. Bamboo houses stand up to 3 hurricanes.
Mortise & Tenon Joinery

Anywhere steel plates are not embedded, a mortise & tenon joint with two bamboo pins is the joinery method used. The sequence below shows how two bamboo poles precisely fit together for a tight connection. Two bamboo pins then fix the crosspiece.

Insulated Bamboo Homes

Insulation R-Value requirements vary by climate. Here is the US DOE map of insulation zones in the USA from mild (6) to severe (1) climate zones. For mild climates, choose insulation up to R-19 for roofs and R-11 for walls. For severe climates, choose insulation R30 for roofs and R-19 for walls. For bamboo homes, the customer determines the R-Values desired and chooses the insulation options. Contact BT about insulation options. Our technician works with your local contractor to determine estimated cost for the house and R-value of your choice. Insulated roof panel (showing metal roofing on plywood substrate). Plywood substrate can be used for any direct applied roofing (asphault, wood or composite shingles). Wood nailing strips are an alternative to plywood substrate for all other roofing options. Insulation can be any thickness or R-Value. Insulation, substrate and roofing material are purchased and installed by owner/contractor on site. 1. Wall System on Exterior Framework. Insulating bamboo house wall panels on site - 3 options.

1. Most economical: Fill interior side of the wall panel with foam or sprayed insulation and then apply sheetrock or imperial plaster to the inner side of the bamboo frame. 2. Mid-range: Remove the exterior bamboo siding and expose the wall cavity that can be filled with insulation, leaving interior bamboo poles exposed. 3. High-end: Apply exterior insulation to outside panel of plywood, then apply stucco or siding.

Paper presented at the Vietnam Intentional Conference on Non-Conventional Materials and Technologies on March 12, 2002, describes research and testing to make bamboo an accepted construction material in the USA.
Abstract: This paper presents the work of Bamboo Technologies toward development of an accepted building code for habitable bamboo structures in the Western World. Six different prefabricated bamboo structures have been designed, erected, and permitted as non-dwelling structures in Hawaii, USA. The houses are manufactured in Vietnam using Vietnamese bamboo, Bambusa stenostachya. This species is currently being tested by ICBO certified labs. Results of tests and subsequent reports will allow construction of these houses to be permitted as dwelling structures in the Western World. Read the full paper.

Sales Network. Bamboo Technologies (BT) is building a worldwide network of independent sales representatives and distributors. BT has sales representatives in the Hawaiian Islands, California, Washington, Florida, Colorado, New York, the Caribbean and Pacific Islands. Referrals. Bamboo Homeowners and Sales Representatives can earn referral fees by showing bamboo houses and bringing new customers to the company. Sales Representatives. Individuals or companies who have qualified as Independent Sales Reps may be bamboo homeowners who have gone through the process, or bamboo products distributors, or builders who have assembled bamboo houses, or architects or contractors. Sales Reps can earn higher levels of commission on house sales depending on their qualified level of participation. Some sales reps are builders involved in house assembly and installation. Distributors. Those who become licensed wholesalers to buy and resell bamboo buildings may typically earn a larger profit margin than sales representatives. This arrangement is suited for a remote location or a country where a local business will import and resell houses. Developers. Companies or individuals may partner with BT under a joint venture agreement in which BT has a role partnering in the development project, providing the bamboo buildings. Bamboo Technologies
Bamboo Vision. Bamboo Technologies (BT) was created in 1995 as a shared vision to
create an environmentally sustainable housing alternative in the building industry. Bamboo was chosen because of its superior ability to create biomass and replenish the earths clean oxygen supply, while creating very high quality and beautiful structural material. Building houses in Vietnam was chosen because of Vietnam's history of managing sustainable bamboo forests and their exquisite craftsmanship.
First Houses. The first prototype of a bamboo home as a permitted structure in the Western building system was completed by David Sands and Jeffree Trudeau in 1996 in Maui, Hawaii. It was prefabricated on site with the first poles from Vietnam. These poles were all pressure treated with boric acid and then coated with a clear no-VOC finish. To this day they look the same as they did the day they were erected. Quality Control. In 1999 BT took the first steps towards an internationally accepted quality control system and design criteria for the use of bamboo as a structural design element in the housing industry. We funded and initiated an Evaluation Criteria Report with the International Congress of Building Officials (ICBO). Structural Bamboo Certification. Bamboo Technologies designs, engineers and manufactures cottages and lodges for eco-resorts. Our design team will translate ideas and concepts into sketches, architectural plans and CAD drawings. We can custom design kiosks, restaurants, bars, spa buildings, cabanas and gazebos. Resort houses are based on existing octagon, rectangle or square house models and can be further customized for each resort. Finished house panels will be shipped in containers to the resort site. BT will supply an experienced installation consultant to train a local assembly team.

Bamboo Resort Houses Stand up to Hurricanes

Bamboo Houses by Bamboo Technologies are designed to exceed seismic and hurricane requirements of international building codes. Steel reinforced bamboo brace panels are used in each building and then bolted securely to engineered foundations. Now we have real evidence from the Cook Islands, of just how well Bamboo houses held up against 173 mph hurricane winds and tsunami like waves, compared to nearby conventional wood frame resorts which were demolished. In February 2005, three cyclones (hurricanes in the southern hemisphere) smashed into South Pacific Islands from Samoa to the Cook Islands. After Meena and Nancy brought high winds, Olaf coincided with high tides and drove waves 100 meters inland, Larger demolishing buildings along the Map Image west coast of Rarotonga.
Conventional resort houses nearby were destroyed and have to be rebuilt. See more photos.

Get clear about what you are responsible for and how much it will cost to prepare for and finish the project, such as permits, infrastructure, platform, roofing, floors, electrical, plumbing, doors, windows, cabinets, appliances and all contractors and labor. 6A. Sign A&E Design contract and provide a deposit. If you wish to customize buildings or floor plans or submit for building permit before house construction or submit for a building loan or mortgage, an Architecture & Engineering Design Contract will preceed the building contract. 6B. Sign Bamboo Building contract and provide 50% deposit. The contract will state clearly what you are purchasing, the costs, and the estimated time of arrival of your house. You provide BT with 50% of the total cost of the house. 7. Get the drawings from us and get a building permit. Obtain building blueprints from us signed by an architect and an engineer. There is a fee for the prints and for the review by the architect and engineer. Hire a permit expediter or take these yourself to your local building permit office. You need to provide building site and local building code information. There is a fee for a building permit. The fee and the time required to obtain a building permit varies with each jurisdiction. 8. The bamboo house is built in Vietnam. Once we receive the deposit we begin building the house at the factory. Timeline for construction depends on the number of orders and season of the year. After the house is built, it is disassembled, put in a container and shipped by boat. Shipping takes about one month. Typically, your house should ship in about 6 months after you place the order. 9. Build the platform with electrical and plumbing access. This must be ready when the house arrives. You can hire someone to do this or do it yourself. You need permits for plumbing, electrical and sewage systems. We can provide the blueprints for the platform. 10. Provide 50% final payment. When the house is shipped you are responsible for paying the remaining 50% of the cost of the house plus shipping and tax. 11. The house is shipped to the port nearest you. 12. Transport the house to the construction site. You are responsible for transporting the 20' or 40' container or unloading the container onto a truck and transporting it to your house site. 13. Assemble the house. This will take 3 to 8 days. You contract a technical supervisor qualified by Bamboo Technologies to come to the home site and direct your local contractor or construction crew. This will assure quality home assembly in the shortest time.. 14. Finish the House. Install roofing material, doors, windows, electrical, plumbing, insulation, flooring, appliances, furniture. Get the roofing material on right away, before the bamboo gets wet. then doors, windows, electrical, plumbing. Seal cracks and joints with insulation and caulk to make house airtight and bug proof. Install finished flooring. 15. Get inspections for plumbing and electrical, as soon as you complete them. 16. Bamboo Technologies will inspect the house for final compliance for building codes. 1. How long will these bamboo houses last? A bamboo house will last as long or longer than any conventional wood framed building. In Japan, bamboo structures have a history of lasting 200 years. In Vietnam, bamboo structures built with untreated bamboo poles of the same species used in our buildings are over 50 years old. These poles are used for telephone and power lines. Our bamboo homes are designed by licensed architects and engineered by licensed structural engineers to meet any local building code requirements for each specific building site. What kind of maintenance is required on the houses? Exterior exposed bamboo requires the same maintenance as any natural wood siding. The siding can be painted, stained or oiled. The house exterior can also be covered with any siding material used in wood frame construction such as stucco. 4. Are the houses susceptible to insects or mold? Bamboo poles, trim and materials are backed by our warranty. In Vietnam, poles are harvested from quality controlled plantations at 3 to 6 years old for maximum strength and hardness. Poles are pressure treated in Boric Acid for insect treatment, sanded and cut, and treated with Shellguard for mold and insect resistance, including powderpost beetle and termites. Poles are coated with Aegis, an antimicrobial agent, to eliminate mold growth and 2 coats of Son Viet, UV resistant durable finish. 5. Are bamboo finishes and treatments safe and environmentally friendly? BT has conducted extensive research over the past decade on the most effective and environmental friendly bamboo treatments and finishes to inhibit mold, fungi, termites, beetles, sun, rain and weathering, so Bamboo Living Homes remain healthy, strong and beautiful for years to come.

6. How are the houses sealed from insects and wind? Houses are completely sealed from insect and wind infiltration. Special attention is given at the factory to seal all joints between panels with rubber seals. After buildings are erected, secondary seals and finish details provide extra protection. 7. Is there any kind of warranty on the house? Yes, All bamboo poles, trim, and materials in the houses are backed by our company warranty. Our bamboo homes have the same life span as any wood frame structure that is properly maintained. 8. Is Structural Bamboo produced by BT in compliance with building codes? Yes. ICC Evaluation Service Report ESR-1636 (Nov. 2004) states that Structural Bamboo Poles produced by Bamboo Technologies comply with the 2003 International Building Code (IBC), 2003 International Residental Code (IRC) and 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). 9. Can these houses be permitted as dwellings in the USA and other countries? BT is approved for dwelling structure permits on Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kauai, Big Island and Oahu. Time required to get permits may vary. Permits in Maui County take the longest, about 2-4 months. Our species of Vietnamese structural bamboo is listed in international building codes, so BT bamboo houses will be permitted as dwellings in the USA and other countries. 10. Can I get home mortgage and homeowners insurance on these houses? Yes. Mortgage companies are available to finance these homes. Contact us for more information. Man to Bring Alternative Building Material to Big Island

If architect David Sands and other visionaries with Bamboo Technologies have their way, you'll be able to do just that. Sands and his business partner Jeffree Trudeau set out 10 years ago to get the International Code Council (ICC) -- the organization responsible for U.S. building codes -- to approve bamboo as a structural building material. They succeeded last November when an ICC evaluation service report acknowledged that structural bamboo poles produced by Bamboo Technologies comply with building code provisions. Now Sands and Trudeau are making their way around the islands familiarizing county building divisions with the Vietnamese variety of bamboo that got ICC approval -- Bambusa stenostachya -- in anticipation of applying for building permits. Sands recently made a pitch for his and Trudeau's company and its product when he met with Mayor Harry Kim, Building Division Head Brian Kajikawa and four building inspectors on the Big Island. David Sands stands on the porch of his Bamboo Thai Hale design in Haiku, Maui.>>> Sands told county officials that Bamboo Technologies can build a home equipped with amenities like water and electrical at $150 per square foot. He said bamboo homes have been constructed on Maui for $120 per square foot. I congratulate you for bringing us this far. For Hawaii, it provides an alternative -- plus the environmental aspect. Bamboo timber can reportedly be harvested every year after 7 years, compared to 30 to 50 years for trees, and it can yield 10 times more timber than trees grown in the same area. It also can regenerate without planting and it is said to generate 20 percent more oxygen than trees.

Bamboo Technologies of Maui earns ICC Certification for Structural Bamboo Poles for Bamboo Living Homes
MAKAWAO HAWAII December 17, 2004. Bamboo Technologies has received confirmation from ICC Evaluation Service that its structural bamboo poles used in Bamboo Living Homes complies with the provisions of International Building Codes. This structural bamboo will be included in the International Building Code system for permitted buildings. This is the first time a species of bamboo has been approved as a structural building material in the International Building Code System. Beautifully crafted Bamboo Living Homes are designed by licensed architects and engineered by licensed structural engineers. They are custom engineered to meet local building code requirements for each specific building site. Designs use the strength of the bamboo and its connections to exceed building code requirements for earthquake and hurricane zones. ICC Evaluation Service Report ESR-1636 (Nov. 2004) states Structural Bamboo Poles produced by Bamboo Technologies comply with the provisions of the following codes: 2003 International Building Code (IBC), 2003 International Residential Code (IRC) and 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). "The structural bamboo poles are used as structural elements in wall, roof and floor trusses (panels) or as individual compression and/or tension members in Type V non-fire resistance rated residential and commercial construction".
