Disha…the guidance

Technical Committee Annual Report

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.”

Disha, the guidance came into force in session 2004-2005.Since the


organization has evolved remarkably.
The mission of the organization is to ignite young minds and channelize
their energies to bring out their inherent creative abilities. Disha
continually adds new dimensions to its undertakings in order to turn the
hopes of today into the realities of tomorrow.
It organizes a multitude of enthralling events through out the session and
also the acclaimed technical festival – Manthan ’07.
The events organized by the committee during the session 2006-2007
were:

Abhivyakti (The Bulletin Board Competition)

Description:

Abhivyakti, the bulletin board competition was a unique drive to create


awareness in students about science and technology in its myriad forms.
A fortnightly quiz on the displayed theme such as
• Scientists’ names and inventions
• Nutrition etc.
Were put on display and participants were required to answer questions
pertaining to the same.

Bits ‘n’ Pieces (On the Spot Collage making Competition)

Description: Bits ‘n’ Pieces, on the spot collage making competition


aspired to surface the creativity and resourcefulness in the participants by
challenging them to assemble a theme from newspaper clippings.

Aakriti (Clay modeling competition)

Description: Aakriti, the clay modeling competition was another feather


to the cap of the ever-evolving and experimenting Disha team. The
participants were required to depict a predefined theme through clay
models to be evaluated on the basis of their ingenuity and novelty. The
themes provided were as follows:
• Warfare
• Sports
• Aliens and Space
• Aqua life
• Most important invention for mankind

Engineers Day Celebration

Description: The Vishwakarma diwas was celebrated with great zeal and
enthusiasm by the committee. An exhibition was held to promote the
spirit of invention and discovery among students. On display were the
collages and models in clay made by the students. The exhibition received
tremendous appreciation and accolade from the students and faculty. The
event was graced by Shri S.C. Jain and Shri J.C Jain who benefited the
students with their words of advice. The unveiling of the report of the
previous session was done by the honorable guests.

Ground Zero (Lecture Series)


Description: ‘Knowledge alone is power!’ The mission of the organization
remains the spread of technical knowledge and its application to practical
problem solving which could not have reached completion without the
indispensable workshops and lecture series. Bearing this in mind the
Ground Zero lecture series on a variety of subjects was started in able
guidance of students who held expertise in the following subjects
• C Programming (I & II year)
• Advanced C programming (III & IV year)
• Microcontroller Architecture and Programming
• AutoCAD designing and PRO-E basics

CAT( Coer Aptitude Test)


Description: Disha organized its own Coer Aptitude Test to give the final
year students a taste of real competition in MBA entrance exams. It had
modules to cater to year specific needs, for the prefinal year it was
adapted to suit the industrial placements while for I & II year the on test
of general aptitude and mathematical abilities remained in focus. The
event enticed massive participation from all disciplines.

Robotics Workshop by TRI-roboTRIx


Description: Powered by the verve of promoting technical know-how
among the students of the college and keeping them updated with the
latest breakthrough in technology Disha organized a Robotics workshop
delivered by a group of IIT alumnus. The workshop spanning two days
involved 16 hrs of extensive theory and training exercise. A hands on
session on the TRI training kit called XCAVATER was met with great
response from the techno savvies who had enrolled for the workshop. The
contents of the workshop were as follows
• Robot locomotion
• Actuators
• Transmission
• Electrical control System

Manthan’07
Description: The word ‘Manthan’ itself speaks volumes. The
proverbial ‘SAMUDRA MATHAN’ yielded the elixir upon the churning of
sea, leaving venom behind.

Manthan is an attempt to draw out the finest skills, the creme – de –


la – creme talents, the matchless potentials from the enthusiastic
COERians.

Manthan, the annual technical festival of College of Engineering


Roorkee is a unique forum where the young engineers get an
opportunity to experience and interact with science and technology in
all its myriad forms. Manthan was conceived in the year 2005 as a
platform to enhance the technical skills of the students and enable
them to undertake the quest for knowledge and come up with fresh
and innovative ideas. It aims to provide a welcome change from the
treadmill of rote learning and above all fairly groom students to accept
similar changes when they actually step into the world of
professionalism.
A cradle for new and grand ideas, it is ever-evolving and diversifying to
act as catalyst for instilling the passion for technology and the zeal to
turn abstract ideas into concrete realities.

Manthan’07 had several events catering to the tastes and needs of every
discipline detailed below:

Formal Events

1. Chakravyuh (The Management Skills Contest)


Description: Charkravyuh tested the students’ managerial crafts,
business awareness, communication skills, aptitude, leadership and
team coordinating abilities.
It was held in three stages:
• Chakravyuh Periphery
Preliminary elimination was done in the written round comprising
MCQs on aptitude, vocabulary, business awareness followed by
short answer question for judging the personality and overall
cognition of the participants.
• Charkravyuh Vortex
30 participants short listed in the written round were invited for a
group discussion.
• Chakravyuh Iris
12 finalists excelling in the group discussion were then faced with
the final round of Boardroom presentation by dividing them into
three teams of four members each. The teams were required to
devise business strategies for a software firm’s new launch and
discuss its financial, HR, technical and other related aspects.

2. Cobweb (The Website Designing Competition)


Description: The web designing contest made path breaking success
with commendable sites on ‘The Indian space program’ which were
both attractive and technically sound. The contest was held in two
rounds
• Preliminary home page submission
Submission of a home page to be preserved in the final site
• Final website judging
Final site of specified size was submitted in the final round and
judged on its appearance, coding and rebutting faced by the
participants.

3. Gigabit (The C programming Contest)


Description: The C programming contest Gigabit aimed to assess the
programming fundamentals and knowledge of C of the participants.
The contest was held in two rounds,
• Preliminary Objective MCQ round
Multiple choice questions on fundamentals in C
• Final programming round on LAN & windows Environment
Participating teams were given real world problems to implement in C
programming.

4. Insight (The paper presentation contest)


Description: Insight gives a platform to the students to put forward
their research and findings on the topic of their interest. Paper
presentation is an integral part of technical education and Insight with
its diverse range of topics invited participation from all departments
and years. A new dimension to insight was the insight management
contest which was introduced keeping in mind the increased relevance
and interest in management. It was held in following stages,
• Abstract submission
An abstract of the research was evaluated for the selection of finalists
on the grounds of its comprehensibility and content.
• Final Presentation
The finalists teams were asked to present their research with the help
of a report and PowerPoint presentation in the final round. The teams
faced questions and rebuttals from the judges and audiences in this
round.
The contest was open to all disciplines under following categories of
competition,
• Computer Science Department CS/IT/MCA
• Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department ET
• Electrical Engineering Department EN
• Mechanical Engineering Department ME
• Management MBA

5. Kurukshetra (Counterstrike LAN Gaming contest)


Description: Introduced in Manthan’07, the highly popular new event
Kurukshetra was an ode to the gaming nerds who are geniuses in their
own respect. The game was projected live for the audiences. The
participants were grouped in a team of five. The game took place in
three stages:
• Knockout Quarter Finals
Random pools of teams were selected and given 15 minutes gaming
time.

6. Matrix (The Software Development Contest)


Description: The open software development contest, Matrix was an
effort to bring out the software geeks open in competition and provide
them with an opportunity to showcase their talent on home grounds.
The event was adapted to mimic the industrial process of project
working in all its levels, which were,
• Report Submission and SRS documentation
• Complete software presentation and Q&A round

7. Prashn (On the Spot General Awareness Quiz)


Description: Prashn stood out as the most lively and dynamic
enterprise, it drew huge participation and audiences. The levels were
enthralling and got increasingly difficult as the elimination round took
place.
The contest was held in levels elaborated below,
• Written elimination
Teams were given 30 questions to be answered within the stipulated
time.
• On stage Preliminary round
8 teams that qualified the written elimination were invited to answer
a miscellaneous question round conducted by the immaculate quiz
master Mr. Rohit Garg (Alumni, B. Tech Computer Science).
• Audio Visual Round
5 teams qualifying the prelims were grilled in the audio visual round
where they had to identify the clips and audios.
• Category Questions
Teams could choose their own area of specialization and the marking
they could invite.
• Who am I : personality identification round
Going by the clues provided by the quizmaster, the teams had to
identify the personality in question.

8. Prayog (Working/Non Working Model making Competition)


Description:
The quintessential engineering distinction is to solve the day to day
problems in the most efficient and effective manner. Prayog, the
working/Non Working Model making competition was a successful
effort in the same direction.
It had two categories
o Working Model Making
o Non Working Model Making
The contest had two levels
• Preliminary abstract Submission round
• Model presentation
The exhibition of the models was held and attended by several
dignitaries.

9. Robosync (Robot making Competition)


Description: The first ever robot designing competition in the
college enticed tremendous enthusiasm and excitation on behalf of
the participants and the audiences for the robot gaming event.
The problem statements were diverse in nature and required
improvisation of different features on a mechanical robot. There were
two problem statements, elaborated below;
• Sand Terrain and Ramp Climbing
In stage one; the robots were required to navigate a sand terrain
having obstacles and hurdles.
In stage two, the machines had to climb a ramp with predefined
inclination and pick up a load of half kg and navigate the ramp
with the load intact.
• Football match
In this game the robots had to play against the opponent in the
given arena with two coloured balls and put them in the
opponent’s turf to score points.

10. Techsnag (The Technical Questionnaire)


Description: The event sought to challenge the technical aptitude
of the students by checking their knowledge of fundamentals in
their subject of specialization.
Participants were grouped in following categories on the basis of
their disciplines,
• Computer Science CS/IT/MCA (III & IV year)
• Electrical and Electronics EN/ET (III & IV year)
• Mechanical Engineering ME (III & IV year)
• Engineering Fundamentals (I & II year)
The event was held in two levels
• Preliminary Questionnaire
The preliminary questionnaire round had multiple choice questions
for each category.
• Open Book Final Round
Finalist teams had to attempt a subjective paper in which they
were allowed to bring reference books of their choice to crack the
question paper.

In addition to the various competitive events, seminars and


workshops were held throughout the fest by distinguished
speakers of vast experience in diverse fields for the benefit of the
students.
• Entrepreneurial Mechanics
Description: In his lecture on ‘Entrepreneurial mechanics’,
Mr. Sanjay Pal, B.tech from IIT R Architect & Investment
consultant and visiting faculty of Career launcher on Business
awareness, drew on his vast experience in marketing and sales.
He encouraged the students interested in sailing an industry of
their own and educated the gathering with the challenges
involved.

• 3-D Animation & Film making


Description: The seminar on 3-D animation and film making was
held to guide the animation enthusiasts and elaborate upon the
possibilities in the field of Animation. The able speakers who
delivered the seminar were,
Ms. Pallavi and Mr. Gaurav Kawatra,
Faculty,
SAE College(School of Audio Engineering and Media
technology), N. Delhi.
The seminar touched upon the various stages of development of
an animation video and the experts displayed the works of the
students of the SAE College to provide a better insight.

The incredible days of this technical extravaganza are not


completely accounted for, without a mention of the informals,
which kept the ambiences lively and the mood zesty. Manthan ’07
saw an increased participation in on the spot informals which were
greatly enjoyed by the college crowd. The informals were
diversified and extensively prepared to the last detail to appeal
the intellects from all branch and years alike. A lineup of the

Manthan’07 was a step ahead of all the committee’s past plans. It was an
outstretched venture coupled with stronger zeal and much wider spectrum of
novel ideas. Manthan’07 was magnanimous in the true sense of the word, the
quality work and standards were preserved and even upgraded by the able
Disha team.
Manthan’07 was a celebration of innovation and genius. The technical
committee dwelt upon this idea single-mindedly for many weeks forfeiting
food, sleep, rest, leisure and not regretting it! It spelt gains for the entire
college, both the participants and organizers in terms of knowledge,
experience and supremely relating us to the cause we devote four years of life
to – ENGINEERING.
