The assault on priesthood :a biblical and theological rejoinder /Lawrence B. Porter. Eugene, Or. : Wipf & Stock,c2012. 9781610972925

The concept and institution of priesthood in the Catholic Church has been the subject of serious challenge not only since the time of the Protestant Reformation but also, more recently, from within the Catholic Church, as the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and theologians afterward have reconsidered the place and function of priests in relation to both bishops and laity. In dialogue with those challenges, and by means of research into Scripture and the theological tradition--patristic, medieval, and modern--the author of this book considers classic images of priests and priestly ministry as a way of recovering an understanding of the priesthood that is at once both biblically and theological sound.

Child sexual abuse, society and the future of the church /edited by Hilary D. Regan. [Wayville, SA] :ATF (Australia) Ltd.,2013. 1922239240 (pbk)

In November 2012 the Australian federal government announced the establishment of a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. This Royal Commission was set up after many years of reports of sexual abuse in Australia within religious institutions of various Christian churches, some state government inquiries and in the context of inquiries in other countries, most notably Ireland. The Royal Commission began its first hearing in April 2013. It has

been forecast that the Commission will be hearing submissions for a number of years from witnesses, both from those who ask to speak to the Royal Commissioners and from those who will be asked to appear before the Commission. At the same time as the establishment of the Royal Commission, the Catholic Church in Australia established a Truth, Justice and healing Council to oversee the Catholic Churchs engagement with the Royal Commission. This collection brings together essays from biblical scholars, a church historian, theologians, ministers of religion from a number of churches, lawyers and a psychologist. They each address the issues of sexual abuse, society and the church in the context of the Australian inquiries. The volume ends with an overview of the processes engaged with by the Catholic Church and the State in the Republic of Ireland and reactions to these inquiries. The volume of essays considers sexual abuse from the perspective of the victims. What is to be done about the mess we are in over clerical sexual abuse? That que stion is puzzling concerned people today. This diverse collection offers them profitable reading, wherever they are coming from. It has enough useful suggestions and ideas to stimulate the calm, intelligent discussion now demanded by our communities. Edmund Campion, Australian Catholic University

Christianity and science /John Weaver. London :SCM Press,2010. 9780334041139 (pbk.)

The SCM Core Text Christianity and Science explores possible dialogues between Christianity and Science in an accessible and student-friendly way. Beginning with explorations of how we understand science and interpret the Bible, the text moves on the discuss five key areas in which science and theology are engaged in a search for understanding: cosmology and the origin of the universe; the natural world and the evolution of life; the mind-brain and the nature of personhood; the genetic modification and manipulation of plant, animal and human life; and the environmental crisis which faces the whole world. The conclusion of the book seeks to explore how our understanding of God and God's activity in the world has developed and been shaped by the dialogue that has been explored in the previous chapters. This final chapter includes a discussion of the problems raised for Christian belief by suffering and `natural evil'. The author thus ventures, in a bold way, to integrate science and faith while not ignoring the difference between them.

Church growth in Britain :1980 to the present /edited by David Goodhew. Farnham, Surrey, England ;Burlington, VT :Ashgate,c2012. 9781409425779 (hardcover : alk. paper)

There has been substantial church growth in Britain between 1980 and 2010. This is the controversial conclusion from the international team of scholars, who have drawn on interdisciplinary studies and the latest research from across the UK. Such church growth is seen to be on a large scale, is multi-ethnic and can be found across a wide range of social and geographical contexts. It is happening inside mainline denominations but especially in specific regions such as London, in newer churches and amongst ethnic minorities. Church Growth in Britain provides a forceful critique of the notion of secularisation which dominates much of academia and the media and which conditions the thinking of many churches and church leaders. This book demonstrates that, whilst decline is happening in some parts of the church, this needs to be balanced by recognition of the vitality of large swathes of the Christian church in Britain. Rebalancing the debate in this way requires wholesale change in our understanding of contemporary British Christianity.

Faith and beauty : a theological aesthetic /Edward Farley. Aldershot, Hants, England ;Burlington, VT :Ashgate,c2001. 0754604535 (hb)

'Aesthetics' and 'theological aesthetics' usually imply a focus on questions about the arts and how faith or religion relates to the arts; only the final pages of this work take up that problem. The central theme of this book is that of beauty. Farley employs a new typology of western texts on beauty and a theological analysis of the image of God and redemption to counter the centuries-long tendency to ignore or marginalize beauty and the aesthetic as part of the life of faith.Studying the interpretation of beauty in ancient Greece, eighteenth-century England, the work of Jonathan Edwards, and nineteenth and twentieth-century philosophies of human self-transcendence, the author explores whether Christian existence, the life of faith, and the ethical exclude or require an aesthetic dimension in the sense of beauty. The work will be of particular interest to those interested in Christian theology, ethics, and religion and the arts.

The last six years have been a remarkable journey of discovery for the Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver, Canada. Representing Maori art has been an awakening. Manawa coincides with the tenth anniversary of Spirit Wrestler Gallery. Manawa is not intended as a testament to the 'best in Maori art.' Manawa showcases Maori art through three-dimensional work, especially wood, which is a medium shared by both Northwest Coast and Maori artists, and therefore a natural transition for collectors new to Maori art. The final selection of Maori and Northwest Coast exhibiting artists included those who have developed relationships or forged friendships over many years with the gallery. The overall theme of the book contains beautiful objects carved, woven, blown and painted in many different media. The book contains an extensive introduction by Darcy Nicholas, a wellknown and respected contemporary Maori painter, sculptor, writer and commentator on tikanga Maori. It has support from Creative New Zealand, toi ihoTM Maori made, Poutama Trust, Tourism NZ and Toi Maori Aotearoa. The authors dedicate this book to June Northcroft Grant in recognition of her vision, her encouragement and her support in Aotearoa in enabling their dream of publishing this book become a reality.

General Title: Publisher: ISBN: The prophet and the policeman :the story of Rua Kenana and John Cullen /Mark Derby. Nelson, N.Z. :Craig Potton,2009. 9781877517112 (pbk.) :

In April 1916, John Cullen, the Commissioner of the New Zealand Police Force, personally led a raid on the Tuhoe prophet Rua Kenana's spiritual community at Maungapohatu, deep in the Urewera mountains. The raid, which was based on trumped-up charges, left two of Rua's followers dead and a number of others wounded, and is often described as the last battle of the New Zealand Wars. The outcome of this raid was disastrous for race relations in this country and a historic low point for the New Zealand police. This book is an account of this dramatic, tragic and profoundly symbolic event in our history, told by recounting the life stories of its two principal antagonists. John Cullen was a farm labourer born in rural Ireland, who rose through the ranks to head the police force and was famously viotent, devious and authoritarian. Rua was notably gentle and inspirational, although often mysterious and contradictory. This is a highly readable, potent and fascinating book of New Zealand history. The two subjects of this dual biography represent two poles of the national character: the archetypal Pakeha no-nonsense conservative who was quite prepared to break the law to serve the

interests of the section of society he represented, and the semi-mythical Maori spiritual leader, steeped in mysterious charisma and pre-scientific beliefs. The 2007 anti-terrorist raids on Tuhoe activists and the urban anarchist supporters have given the 1916 Maungapohatu raid a contemporary resonance: a connection that is explored in the conclusion of this book.

The lifeguard :poems, 2008-2013 /Ian Wedde. Auckland, New Zealand : Auckland University Press, 2013. 9781869407698

Peter Marshall Fund

Ian Wedde's latest collection of poems are a complex mix of rhapsody, fear, and humour, and the prose explore the contradictions between life's pool-side surfaces and frightening undertows. Opening with a major new series of poems "The Lifeguard," it concludes with another long sequence, "Shadow Stands Up," in which a world of Platonic memory and tidal recurrence is observed from a window-seat in Auckland's conspicuously green-branded Link bus. Bringing together work from the past five years by one of New Zealand's most outstanding contemporary poets, this collection shows a master of the are at his thoughtful and surprising best.
