ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
Our Boycott of the commemoration of August 29 th Moratorium in East Los Angeles at Salazar Park sponsored by the National Chicano Moratorium Committee, NCMC, may appear confusing especially with the attempts of the NCMC to mislead the issue by making it seem frivolous, when in fact is a very serious matter. It is a fact that this year, in 2013, the Commemoration of August 29th is no longer a CHICANO POLITICAL event, instead it is a distorted Latino incident. For this reason we put forth this clarification: Historical Development of August 29th Commemoration and La Raza Unida August 29, 1970 arrived as the Chicano Movement was at its highest stage of development; our ideological direction was solidifying, El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan MEChA was unifying our students into Chicano Nationalism. La Raza Unida Party was in the horizon as our own political organization, and Chicano Studies was firing up our education and historical awareness. Our movement and people were on the move. This is not to say that all was perfect, yet Chicano Nationalism was so strong it could combat anything; liberalism, backwardness and even those distorted elements that have always been part of revolutionary movements. Chicano Nationalism didnt permit vendidismo

TAKING BACK OUR MOVEMENT

August 29, 1970 arrived as one of the largest Chicano demonstrations in the history of La Raza in the Southwest, over 30 thousand Chicanas and Chicanos marched that day. From that day forward, La Raza Unida Party and those who would form the Partido organization nationally committed ourselves to the preservation of August 29th. The Chicano Moratorium became our symbol of RESISTENCIA to gringo colonialism and imperialism. Our resolve for selfdetermination was strengthened. Later, we called for that day to be commemorated as a day of reverence for our fallen heroes and the struggles of our people, a Chicano Memorial Day. What followed, they say, is history; La Raza Unida Party continued to honor and commemorate the Chicano Moratorium throughout the 1970s and with this historical commitment in to pg 4 fr. pg 1 1980, La Raza Unida Party, California called for the 10year Commemoration of August 29th. Again in 1990, the National La Raza Unida put out a call for the 20th Commemoration of August 29th. The call was answered by Union Del Barrio. Thus, history is witness to our commitment to the Chicano Moratorium. Of course, in the process we have encountered sell outs, adventur- to pg 4

or adventurist distractions to get in the way of our goal for Aztlan. As our Movement grew so did conscious opposition to the War in Vietnam and knowledge of US imperialism.

We understood that as a colonized people, Chicanos had no business in Vietnam killing or being killed for US imperialism. As we further organized the Chicano Anti-War Movement calling for the end to the war, many Chicano Anti-War demonstrations were held throughout Aztlan in 1969, including in San Fernando, California. Through these events the Chicano Movement took a more militant posture. Our call to end the war with the August 29, 1970 Moratorium and Rally was the result of the vast power network created within the Chicano Movement across Aztlan. Our demand was simple, BRING OUR CARNALES BACK ALIVE-NOT IN BODY BAGS and OUR WAR IS HERE IN THE BARRIOS OF AZTLAN.

BOYCOTT!!
The National Chicano Moratorium Committees NCMC August 29th Commemoration in East L.A. 2013
After much consideration and thought, we the signatures of this statement, call for the boycott of the 43 rd Commemoration of the National Chicano Moratorium, sponsored by the National Chicano Moratorium Committee NCMC, to be held at Salazar Park in East Los Angeles, on Saturday August 24, 2013. Our action acknowledges August 29th Commemoration, as a very important day for all Raza, in particular for Chicano/Mexicano Revolutionary Nationalists. For us, August 29th represents the resistance of our people to US colonialism in Aztlan and opposition to the bellicose aggressions of US imperialism around the world. Since the first Moratorium on August 29, 1970 was held in East Los Angeles, PNLRU has recognized the importance of the day, thus in good conscious we call for the BOYCOTT of this distorted commemoration by the NCMC 2013. We are not opposing any other commemoration of August 29th, 1970. We, as individuals and as separate organizations have always upheld this, our historic day. We have dedicated ourselves to preserving and promoting this day as a day of RESISTENCIA!! A day of Recognition and Remembrance of our heroes; as CHICANO MEMORIAL DAY. YET, we cannot stand idly in the presence of unprincipled liberalism, which has permitted destructive elements to basically take over the NCMC. As a member of the NCMC, The National La Raza Unida and another member of the committee not affiliated with the PNLRU, met and pointed out these concerns and contradictions to the Chair of the NCMC. He claimed that he would take care of the matter, but nothing was done. These negative elements are divisive, unprincipled, and opportunistic. Along with their deceitful intentions in the NCMC meetings, these individuals have attacked the NLRUP and the NBB verbally, harassed family members of the Partido via the internet, even our children and have given personal information to racists. Yet when the main character was confronted face to face in a NCMC meeting, he said nothing. We have tried to resolve this situation only to be ignored and patronized: Any concerns we have are just dismissed as personal issues. The result has been the hijacking of the National Chicano Moratorium Committee NCMC, by these destructive individuals and the derailment of the NCMC from its core principles and the overall foundation of Chicano/Mexicano Revolutionary Nationalism. Therefore, as an alternative and as a part of our campaign el VERANO ROJO; we will commemorate August 29th in the San Fernando Valley, tentatively at Tia Chuchas Cultural Center in Sylmar on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Come, Participate, and Contribute to the self-determination and liberation of our people as we continue to commemorate August 29th, 1970 as Chicano Memorial Day. Build and advance our movement. Advancing with the Revolutionary Spirit of August 29th, and the National Chicano Moratorium .

STATEMENT OF BOYCOTT
In the course of our existence as an organization we have had to make the decision to distance ourselves from certain people or groups who do not uphold Chicano Revolutionary principles, are not sincere nor have integrity, and/or have sold out to other interests. While we have maintained relationships with non-Chicano organizations those people and groups have shown themselves to be sincere in their willingness to understand and accept our struggle as a valid one. There are people who have also made themselves enemies of the Brown Berets and all Chicanos in general by their actions and words. As a Chicano organization we do not like to do our dirty laundry in public but certain times we have to put our foot down and say YA BASTA! (Enough is Enough) when some groups and people make a mockery of the struggle or blatantly attack us. This year we have found ourselves having to do this by calling for a general boycott of the so-called National Chicano Moratorium Committee. In previous years when we have attended the meetings we have seen MEChistas verbally attacked and not allowed to participate, we have heard homophobic statements made by the organizers, and last year one of the organizers physically threatened one of our soldiers challenging him to a fight. If not for our commitment to our Raza that Brown Beret would have pulverized him. Also, last year a Jewish man who is a Private Detective and who has repeatedly slandered members of the Raza Unida Party and the Brown Berets was allowed to participate and this year he was given prime influence in the Committee. This man has bragged about his subversive activities against Chicano leaders, and has acted in a way that is reminiscent of the tactics used by cointelpro in framing Chicanos leaders so they can either be arrested or their reputations and organizations destroyed. This man has also released the names and pictures of the Raza Unida Party and Brown Beret leaders and their families to law enforcement and other racist entities who have used them to attack us. This we cannot tolerate. When the issue was brought up to the Chair of the Committee he dismissed it as a personal issue and refused to kick this man out. The commemoration of the Chicano Moratorium was upheld by the Raza Unida Party for many years and this year their role was marginalized because of this man who has infiltrated the NCMC and is a sworn enemy of the Raza Unida Party and the Brown Berets. It only takes a few seconds to see who is endorsing this year's commemoration that the majority of those people are Latinos, and other Non-Chicano activists. We have heard that instead of it being a commemoration of the lives lost and the battle that was fought against the LA County Sheriff that day 43 years ago, it is becoming a full blown Latino fiesta with a car show and all. This is a mockery, this is a

complete shame! The National Brown Berets, the largest and most active organization of Brown Berets with over 750 associate members worldwide, will be boycotting the NCMC's celebration. We uphold the belief in Chicano Revolutionary Nationalism and no self-respecting Chicano Revolutionary, Nationalist or not, would participate in such a disgraceful display that the NCMC is giving us. They have completely left the Chicano Revolutionary struggle. Instead of this mockery of a fiesta, we are working in co-ordination with the Raza Unida Party to hold a true Commemoration of the Chicano Moratorium in the San Fernando Valley. We ask all Chicano/as to come out support. It will be held on Saturday, August 24th, at the Tia Chuchas Cultural Center. We will post more event information as we continue to organize the event. Thank you for your support. Chimalli Cuetlachtli,

ists and warped individuals who continue their attempts to derail and destroy our movement; in this case it is the Chicano Moratorium Commemoration. These last few years we have had a continuous struggle with liberalism within the NCMC. A type of liberalism that has permitted distorted and opportunist individuals to creep into our midst. So today in 2013, we say Enough is enough, for too long we have justified this liberalism by saying, At least there will be a march. For much too long, we have allowed thuggish tactics by demented elements and even non-Raza characters to chauvinistically insult and disrespect us by speaking in our name, and speak for all Chicanos. For too long, we compromised for the benefit of any semblance of commemoration, without thought of how people perceived our actions, our Movement. YA BASTA! Its time. Resolution on the Chicano National Question

are the majority of the population. There are approximately 50 million people identified as Raza in the USA, of which, over seventy-five percent are ChicanoMexicanos. Eighty-five percent of all Chicanos are concentrated in the southwestern part of America Ocupada; California, Arizona, Nuevo Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Southern Utah Montana and Nevada. When the Europeans first came to this area these were already established Indigenous-Raza communities; for this reason it is important to understand the true history and culture of the Chicano in AZTLAN. We see the centuries old inter-continental migration as the continual back and forth movement of our people from Mexico and Central America, as continued flow through the different areas in our continent. And recognize the recurrent cycle, begun long before the appearance of Spain, England, Russia, France, Portugal or the Dutch. We hold to the position that the original people of this continent did not create the borders that divide us today. When Indigenous Raza enters Aztlan, we recognize that they are simply returning home. The Chicano Movement welcomes these migrating families as our people. It must be understood that the economic domination and imperialist colonization by the United States in Central and Latin America is what drives people from their home countries in the first place. This creates a In many areas of the consistent flow of Raza into Southwest today, Chicanos the already established ChicaThe development of what would become the Chicano internal colony of the United States of North AmericaUSA is an integral part of the imperialist history of this country. The Birth of the Chicano Nation originates in the brutal occupation and colonization of what became the US southwest at the end of the expansionist war provoked by the USA against Mexico between 1830 and ending in 1848 with the settler occupation and colonization of the SouthwestAZTLAN. The mass murders, enslavement, plunder and colonization of peoples and nations was and continues as the modus operandi of US imperialism around the world. It began on this continent under the guise of Manifest Destiny and the partial extermination of the original peoples of North America. It continued with the enslavement, purchase, relocation, and resale of Africans for profit; followed by the further occupation and colonization of over fifty-one percent of Mexican/Native territories, the current US Southwest Aztlan. The so called Mexican American War gave way to occupation of land and people; and subsequently, the raise of our heroic resistance and the rebirth of AZTLAN the Chicano Nation. It is within this general context that we view the occupation and colonization of the Chicano Nation and the Chicano Struggle for National Liberation. This Resistance to the gringo invasion is what has grown into the Chicano struggle for selfdetermination and liberation.

Many of these families bring children, who are absorbed into the colonized psychology and social reality of the Chicano and its popular culture. They come from any part of America; become Chicanos in Aztlan as they struggle against the colonizer and

Southwest is our ancestral homeland. Because of this, we are the colonized nation Aztlan fighting for dignity, respect, self-determination and national liberation. The chains that strangle the aspirations of the Chicano Nation have been wrapped around our bodies, minds and souls by the multi-national capital-

work for a better life, family, community, Aztlan and world. Thus a Chicano may be of Salvadorian or Guatemalan heritage or from any of the other countries of this hemisphere yet socially, politically, psychologically, they too will become Chicanos. We naturally, include traditional Natives of the southwest in this definition because like us, they and their ancestors were born here they are us and we are them. It is an indisputable fact that Chicanos as indigenous beings, suffer the most brutal forms of national oppression in every aspect of our lives, even though AZTLAN the

ist class. They value profit over human existence, and are the source of all oppression and exploitation; not only in the United States but throughout the world. The Chicano people and the working class of this country have a common enemy. Yet the Chicano nation is the only entity within the United States with the historical presence to challenge the US colonizer; socially, politically, economically and territorially. This is why they attempt everything in their power to distort our history, our struggle and identity as CHICANOS. We are indigenous to this land, this hemisphere: Without this to pg 6

principle we would have no claim here. The Chicano has the task of rising up and uniting all our people against the rule of this consumer capitalist society of two party tyranny; Democrat and Republican, along with their Hispanic/Latino apologists, who unwittingly or not, serve as a buffer zone between the Chicano people/movement and the colonizer. Many believe themselves to be middle class, but as the general population of the world begins to recognize that there is no such thing as middle class, they experience the racist backlash by those who once simply tolerated them. There must be unity among Chicano and Raza workers of all social backgrounds to win victory over such a powerful, exploitive enemy. This Unity will only come about when Chicanos at all levels of society, particularly the Chicano worker, join our movement and fight against all forms of national oppression, along with the right of the Chicano Nation to selfdetermination. Unity will come as people understand and embrace Chicano Nationalism. Rodolfo Corky Gonzales once stated Nationalism is the glue that holds our people together. Understanding unity produced by our historical memory as a people and our distinct cultural character, is to understand that Chicano is what we have become in the process of our historical development. Chicano is the common denominator of who we are as indigenous to Aztlan and Las Americas. Thus, we see Chicano to be the common thread in our identity as we struggle for dignity and national liberation. As in all world movements for liberation, nationalism is the backbone of our movement. Without Chicano

The Chicano Liberation Movement, as an indigenous movement of Aztlan, believes that all true revolutionary elements within the USA must support the right of selfdetermination of the Chicano Nation, not simply because of any moralistic or humanitarian reasons, but because oppression of the

nationalism we would have no claim to our national territory in the USA southwest. US capitalism understands this; and for this reason they distort our identity and have declared war on the truth. The fact is, that the most reasonable national identity for us as people of the Southwest AZTLAN is CHICANO. The love for our people and land is not a contradiction to our revolutionary theory of liberation BUT rather a requirement. Based on this identity the Partido National La Raza Unida declares that as Chicanos, we need unity for the advancement of our struggle, people and nation. This is why we see the Aztlan Flag as synonymous to Chicano. It is the dialectical result of our national struggle and our national emblem.

Chicano people is a main pillar of U.S. imperialist power. Global imperialism cannot survive without the oppression of the Chicano nation and the working peoples herein. Our struggle for self-determination is primarily toward national liberation and therefore against global US imperialism. Viewed from the stand point of the working class, labor unions for the most part have become partners with the two-party dictatorship of Democrats and Republicans. Chicano workers in support of self-determination for the Chicano Nation and as a contribution toward our liberation must maintain the responsibility to shed light on all contradictions within US unions and the labor movement in general. The current economic

and political crisis of the United States is causing an intensification of the national oppression of Chicanos and working class people. We must not be fooled by the latest tactic of the ruling class to put color into the White Racist House. That color may change along with some of the rhetoric, but the destructive capitalist nature remains the same, as the past few years have proved. The cold-blooded killing of Chicanos/Raza by the police/ migra and racist vigilantes must stop. The racist immigration laws which have become a common fact of life in the Southwest continues to spread throughout the country and must be addressed. Yet we must understand that these are merely brush fires meant to distract us, keep us preoccupied, and incheck. The waning health and social services in the Chicano community are being drastically cut back due to the wars of domination and selective nation building in the Middle East by imperialist USA forces. We will not allow our Youth yet again to be groomed as cannon fodder for US imperialism. As Chicanos fill the unemployment lines, the standard of living gets worse, and the quality of education now at seventy five percent dropout rate, continues to decline. We remain under represented as students and faculty in higher education, but overwhelmingly represented in the prisons. Social services and affordable housing for Raza continues to decline at a steady to pg 10

The Hate against Sebastian Is Systemic

Sebastian De La Cruz wowed everyone with this rendition of the Star Spangled Banner during the national basketball game finals last spring. No doubt, the kid is talented and is blessed with the gift of song. But I am not writing this blog to talk about his amazing talent, charisma and charming personality. We all can see that he is indeed special. What I do want to talk about, which I feel hasnt been addressed in a productive fashion, is the racism that was directed at him on twitter. Let me reiterate the hate that was spewed moments after: Who the Fuck is this Mexican Boy? This is America Dammit. Mexican Kid singing the National Anthem, now thats pretty fucked up. 9 out of 10 chance that kid singing the national anthem is illegal. So illegal aliens can sing the national anthem? Another wrote: San Antonio, go to hell! Im quite certain there are more comments like these that werent caught on twitter and racist comments made in living rooms across the United States as Sebastian sang his heart out. For many people, it caught them by surprise and the general reaction was of one of disbelief. I read comments from good hearted people who said, This is America and we believe in multiculturalism or others who came to the defense of Sebastian calling him as American as anyone else in this country. However, to me, this did not take me by surprise at all. Racism against Mexican/Raza people has been here since the taking of the southwest in 1848 and prior. This is just another event in this legacy of hate toward the Mexicano/ Chicano that very few want to acknowledge. These comments were not at all put in proper context. These comments were not only an attack on Sebastian, but an attack on the entire Mexican/Chicano/Raza community as a whole. Having worked in the community as an activist, teacher, and counselor, I confront this type of prejudice in our communities. Though President Obama offers his hand of support to Sebastian, who later went on television to say he is an American, Obama has drafted a bill, along with his Gang of Eight, to militarize the border so that more like Sebastian and his family will not enter the country. I find it odd, that people claim that this country is a melting pot and yet will in the same breath use the term illegal alien, not support pathways to citizenship and characterize the Mexicano/ Chicano as an outsider as evidence through these comments. Sebastian is safe in the sense that he was born on the other side of that fake border and has his citizenship, but what of the others who are fleeing economic injustice in Mexico. He takes on the term American, when it is quite obvious that this so called American System does not want him or any in his community in the first place. Intellectual curiosity begs me to ask the question, what wouldve happened if he had said he were a Chicano and that his roots run deep in this country as far back as the 1800s before this was even considered the United States. What wouldve happened then? Im sure he wouldve experienced a backlash of mass proportions. And really, thats what raza has learned to do; bow our heads and accept the American label theyve given us in order to be accepted. Why is it that we are not asking the RIGHT questions about what went down? Why is it that we are not seeing this problem as part of a systemic problem inherent in the racist psychology of United States of America? How is it that a brown skinned eleven year old boy, who goes out in a charro to sing the national anthem, had to endure such horrible attacks? Though he responded with style and grace, as most Chicanos/ Mexicanos have learned to do in order to survive, no apologies were made, no dialogue about prejudice against the Chicano/Mexican community went down: NOTHING. As always, this issue will be swept under the rug and seen as just one of those things that happened. I taught a course on the Psychology of Prejudice for eight years. An important theory, proposed by a psychologist named Gordon Allport is that prejudice and hate happen on a continuum. The first step is what he called ANTILOCUTION. Antilocution is the expression of hateful opinions or hate speech. Groups are characterized as outsiders or less than human. Antilocution is often seen as harmless but

over time, these statements can hurt the self-esteem of the targeted group. Really, what we witnessed on twitter was unadulterated hate against the Mexican community. After hate speech, comes AVOIDANCE. Avoidance means: People in a group are actively avoided by members of another group. Harm is done through isolation and by preparing the way for more harmful acts. XENOPHOBIA, or the fear of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange, results in EXCLUSION. You can see this happening as we live in segregated communities or people wanting to move out to a better neighborhood in order to avoid those they see as different as them. Another extreme example is that of DEPORTATION. The law is set up so that those we deem as outsiders, in this case Mexicanos/raza have no practical way to legalize themselves quickly and so are forced out of the country. The next stages consist of DISCRIMINATION (racial profiling in stores, denial of job opportunities), physical attack (for example, victims of racial profiling and police murder) and lastly GENOCIDE. The expression of negative opinions towards an individual has an effect on the entire group as a whole and how that group is seen within the larger society. Unfortunately, the general attitude as I see it is that its not a big deal. But make no mistake about it, the attacks on our community will continue. And will to pg 10

Violence Against Women

" As long as I am treated with dignity I am steadfast." -Song of the Grandmothers Selu: Seeking the Corn Mother's Wisdom. The United Nations interprets violence against women as: "Any act of gender violence which results in, or is likely to result in physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering of women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether in public or in private life." In this country the War against Women" rages beyond the limit, it deprives and restricts women from obtaining equal human rights in any society. Before the European "conquest" indigenous women were valued for their vitalizing power not only for bringing new life into the world but their words and participation were considered highly important. Many tribes throughout our nations thought that the primary potency of the universe was female and that great understanding influenced all activities, both religious and social. In the book Sacred Hoop, Recovering the Feminine in American Indian Tradition, author Paula Gunn Allen stated, "They were mothers and that word implied the highest degree of status in ritual cultures. The power of mothering and women is not so much the power to give birth but the power to make, to create and transform. They were mothers and that word did not imply slaves, drudges, drones who are required to live only for others rather than for themselves as it does so tragically for modern women. Today, these cruel Anglo, male dominated ideas continue to be used to enforce colonialism, destroy the historically valued position of women, and to make and keep her powerless. within the Chicano Movement in their areas: Las Mujeres de Aztlan recalled a time in 1971, after a heated and heavy Chicano meeting with their men, where they came to the realization that women were being disrespected and overlooked on a consistent basis. Behind closed doors with the men of their organization present, Ernestina Garcia stood and in a rather loud voice said, "You say you love your Mothers, Wives, Daughters, Sisters, Tias, Madrinas, Sobrinas, Grandmothers and Girlfriends? Well can you tell me; why in the hell do you mistreat, disrespect and abuse your own women? What kind of people are you to say one thing and then turn around and do the other against us, because we are women, YOUR women? The men were taken aback, not realizing what they had been doing. When they understood the great asset Chicanas had been in the struggle for all of our human rights combined, many changed their actions but some men stayed in their ignorance about the respect and treatment of our women. Domestic Violence not only kills women even children, but it also leaves others with long standing mental and physical health problems. Many men, who insist on control, justify the mistreatment, abuse and disregard for women and her needs with their religious beliefs, teachings and writings about how women are supposed to be and act in "civilized" society. The children who experience and learn this violence suffer disturbances which they in turn consider as normal behavior. Exposure to violence in the home plus the sexualization of violence on television, in music lyrics and advertising worldwide, perpetuate and cause more children to experience violence later in their own lives. Violence easily leaves a vicious cycle of dysfunctional behavior that is critically damaging to the future survival of healthy progressive generations. What can Raza do about this epidemic of violence in our own culture? We can promote better communication and relationship skills within our communities. We can teach and educate one another about gender inequalities and change the cultural gender norms that weve learned from the dormant society. We can reduce the access of drugs and alcohol, which easily intensifies violence. We can work to make it less of a stigma to seek help to begin healing from the damage and scars of abuse. We must work to be sensitized about the seriousness of violence and not allow or accept violence against anyone: man, woman or child as a normal way of living. for any reason. We should teach one another to express ourselves without fear of reprisal of violence and learn self-defense to physically protect one another. Then we need to learn about programs and share that information. We can to pg 10

This divide and conquer method made it easier for the foreigners/aliens to control the men as well. According to the Women's Health Organization, those who perpetuate violence against their own women are likely to be of low income, uneducated and have an exaggerated idea about male entitlement and gender inequality. They use this as a way to control and have dominance over women. But a hidden/unspoken culture of violence against more affluent women has come to light recently. More and more women are speaking out about their own experiences even by those with the means to keep it hidden, as had been previously done. In the early 70s some women took it into their own hands to make some changes

pace. The future of our youth is being destroyed and criminalized by US society and police in general, simply because they are Chicano and dare to cross a street or stand in groups. ment. Still the Chicano people fight against every aspect of colonization and oppression. The Chicano/Raza working class can no longer stand idle on the sidelines and not join the struggle. We can no longer choose sides, there is now only one side; that of Chicano Liberation. This stand must be clear-cut, Your fight is the Chicano fight. The Chicano and all Raza working class who live in any part of the United States, particularly in Aztlan, must take up the fight for Chicano liberation and concretely uphold the right

of self-determination for the Chicano Nation because this is the only viable solution to protect our people. However in order to fulfill this responsibility, it is critical to understand the historical struggle of the Chicano people, and have a clear grasp of the practical aspects of the Chicano struggle for liberation. This is the first installment of the PNLRU paper on the Chicano National Question. We will continue to present the paper in full in this publication as space allows.

Hate Against Sebastian:

Chicanos/Mexicanos continue to be silent or stand up? As a people, we are very forgiving. So forgiving we end up making it harder for ourselves! We see deportations, we experience the hate directed at our people, weve endured the false promises of this political system, and what do we do? Work even harder to be accepted, play this game of going along, instead of asserting our own identity, our own humanity, our own right to our ancestral land. This strategy has helped us survive in the short term, but does us no good in the long term as a people. They call Chicano History a recurring history, as we continue to face the same problems weve had for centuries. Why, because we continue to use the same strategy of ignoring, of

being conciliatory, of playing the game, instead of confronting the problems before us in a strong and united fashion. Let us not take on the term American, but the term Chicano! Chicano/a is a term that unites all who live in the southwest whether you were born on this side or the other side, it doesnt matter! Were all one people! Let us unshackle ourselves from the false promises of acceptance theyve given us and begin to find strength in who we are and our history. I do wish much happiness and success for little Sebastian and I see him as a shining star. But it would be a dream come true to see him grow into a proud, strong Chicano! It is up to us to bring this message to our community because no one else will do it for us!

discussion groups and start a list, of safe homes to help women who want to escape. We must demand legislation that develops policies in this country that truly treat and protect all victims of abuse unconditionally. The protection, livelihood, respect and dignity of our entire Raza Familia en El Nuevo Ser require both men and women unite to overcome the horrors of violence and abuse. THIS IS NOT JUST A WOMAN'S ISSUE and it is not just a Raza Familia issue. Abuse, violence and neglect of women is a global issue, and the severity affects us all as we seek our liberation as a whole. It is a worldwide issue and we must start at home.

the seriousness of this issue. If you are being abused or know of someone who is, please reach out, and with carnalismo in your heart give understanding and patience with support and love to those who are going through this horror. Its important to know that you deserve to live in a safe and healthy environment, free from fear and threats. STOP THE MADNESS!! Children are seeing this in their homes; they are learning and experiencing when they see their mothers, sisters, tias, grandmothers being beaten by the men they love. They will come to know this as love and expect this in their own homes. This hostility isnt good for the betterment for our Raza Familia, and counterproductive to the concept of el Nuevo Ser in building Aztlan.

La Chingona Dice:
Hermanas y Hermanos, acts of violence against women continue to worsen as time goes by. Every day, women are being taken advantage of, neglected, abused and beaten by those who claim to love them. Abused women are afraid, ashamed, and humiliated; they feel powerless and isolated. Women are tired of abuse. Often, an abused woman will blame herself for his violence. As women, we dont have to accept this cruelty; but we are conditioned to believe that we are at fault. We want good fathers for our children and to keep the families together. I realize that this may be a sensitive topic to those of us who have been abused in any way, but it is a very serious issue and must be addressed. This has happened to me and I know these things all too well. These actions show the ugliness and seriousness of violence against women. Most abused women dont or cant see the light at the end of the tunnel or even a way out: Sometimes it takes something very bad to happen. For me, it was the realization that his alcoholism was violent and self-destructive. It finally reached the point where he would kill me or I would kill him! He chose the negative over the positive, something had to give. When I finally got help, I learned that the abuse is happening everywhere! Once I decided to leave the situation, I questioned Why did I choose to stay so long, knowing that it would never work out, and we were all so miserable? We MUST respond to

This Calendario Chicano was originally published by La Causa Publications in 1974 by diligent and forward thinking individuals who understood the necessity to know our own history, and who in their own words gave reasons for their actions: El Calendario Chicano is an attempt to place the contemporary Chicano movement in its proper historical context. It is the primary purpose of this calendar to show on a day-by-day basis that the Chicano struggle for liberation and justice is not a recent phenomenon. Instead, it is a struggle deeply rooted in the historical experiences of our people in this nation. Our people are not a suddenly awakening minority who has been taking siestas for the past 200 years, as some authors have recently written. We are and have always been a proud and fighting people who have daily struggled to maintain our dignity in a nation that has exploited and abused us. El Calendario Chicano was prepared with the help of over 40 books on Chicanos and the Southwest, hundreds of news articles from the Chicano Press Association and non -Chicano publications, and numerous documents that have come into our possession over the years. The dates listed in this calendar are only as accurate as our sources. Often these sources did not provide specific dates for events we wanted to include, in other cases; different sources gave different dates for the same event. We hope to publish as much of the Calendario that we have room for, and are grateful for the work it took to gather the information. We offer this work as it was originally intended, so that our people will know that Chicanos have resisted though out our long history of exploitation. Ours is not a new struggle, but a continuing struggle for self-determination. The Partido La Raza Unida gives thanks to the original Chicanos who worked to produce this Calendario Chicano in 1973 for the future: Gloria Chacon, Tobias Duran, Roberto Garcia, Juan Gomez, Felix Gutierrez, Reynaldo Macias, David Martinez and Armando ValdezViva La Causa!
