Republican Party formed in U.S. Established to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories. The party was strongly influenced in its early years towards the idea of liberal capitalism, in opposition to the monopoly capitalism of the National Republican wing of the Whig party. Outbreak of Civil War Primarily due to economic differences between the North and South, the extension of slavery, and the election of Abraham Lincoln. Triple Alliance between Italy, Austria, and Germany The Triple Alliance brought Italy into the alliance previously agreed between Germany and AustriaHungary (in 1879) as a counterweight to France and Russia. One of the chief aims: to prevent Italy from declaring war against Austria-Hungary End of China-Japan war Treaty of Shimonoseki is the agreement that concluded the first Sino-Japanese War (189495), which ended in Chinas defeat. By the terms of the treaty, China was obliged to recognize the independence of Korea, over which it had traditionally held suzerainty; to cede Taiwan, the Pescadores Islands, and the Liaodong (south Manchurian) Peninsula to Japan; to pay an indemnity of 200,000,000 taels to Japan; and to open the ports of Shashi, Chongqing, Suzhou, and Hangzhou to Japanese trade. U.S declares war on Spain over Cuba United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The Spanish were quickly defeated, and Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders gained fame in Cuba. Meanwhile, Commodore George Dewey's fleet crushed the Spanish in the faraway Philippines.
