============================== Using Abaqus PDF Documentation ============================== For Abaqus 6.

9 the online documentation is provided in portable document format (PDF) on DVD as an optional supplement to the installable online documentation in HTML format. For information on installing the Abaqus HTML documentation, see Abaqus documentation installation, Section 2.2 of the Abaqus Installation and Licensing Guide. The Abaqus PDF documentation is not meant as a replacement for the installable online HTML-format documentation. However, it has the following advantages: -- Convenient portable reference -- Ability to print a range of pages, such as a section or chapter -- Higher quality printed output than that available from the HTML documentation -- Searchable alternative to the HTML documentation, particularly for installations where the HTML documentation is not searchable because the no web server configuration is used The detailed, step-by-step instructions for using each of the Abaqus/CAE functions are available only in the HTML version of the Abaqus/CAE User's Manual and as context-sensitive help. They do not appear in the PDF version of the manual. The hyperlinks in context-sensitive help will not function if you have not installed the Abaqus HTML documentation. More information about navigating and printing the Abaqus PDF documentation is available in Chapter 5, "Overview of the Abaqus PDF documentation," of Using Abaqus Online Documentation. Viewing the Abaqus PDF Documentation -----------------------------------A PDF viewer, such as Adobe Reader, is required for viewing the PDF documentation files. The search functionality available for the PDF documentation is dependent on the PDF viewer that you select. The following PDF viewers are recommended for the Abaqus PDF documentation: -- Adobe Reader 8.1.3 on Linux platforms -- Adobe Reader 8.0 on Windows platforms (supports collection-level searching) Note: Adobe Reader is available through third-party software vendors. Later versions of Adobe Reader are expected to offer acceptable performance. Updated information on platform support for PDF viewers can be found under System Information on the Support page at www.simulia.com. You may be able to view the PDF documentation on platforms that are not supported by SIMULIA; consult the SIMULIA Answers database in the SIMULIA Online Support System for more information. The SIMULIA Online Support System is accessible through the My Support page at www.simulia.com. To view the Abaqus PDF documentation:

1. Insert the Abaqus DVD into the drive. 2. Manually open the file pdf_docs/index.pdf in your PDF viewer. The list of books in the Abaqus PDF collection is displayed. 3. From the list of books, you can click a title to open an individual book or you can access the search functionality to search the PDF documentation. Copying the Abaqus PDF Documentation -----------------------------------You may copy the entire contents of the DVD containing the Abaqus PDF documentation to a file system, in accordance with the following terms: Use of this material is governed by your Abaqus software license agreement. You are required to do the following: (1) Keep the documentation confidential and utilize your best efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure or use of any Abaqus Program including the Abaqus documentation for such program. (2) Treat all Abaqus Programs including the Abaqus documentation with the same degree of care that you treat like information of your own that you do not want publicly disclosed or the subject of unauthorized access or use. (3) Not make or permit to be made any more copies of any Abaqus Program including the Abaqus documentation than are authorized by your Abaqus software license agreement. Searching Abaqus PDF Documentation ---------------------------------Search functionality varies widely depending on the PDF viewer, viewer version, and platform. For detailed information on a specific PDF viewer, refer to the user documentation for that application. The Abaqus PDF documentation includes a compiled search index file (69_index.pdx) to enable accelerated collection-level searches. The index name associated with the 69_index.pdx file is "Abaqus 6.9 PDF Documentation." Searching this index is much faster than searching all the text in the individual books and is the recommended approach for searching the Abaqus PDF documentation. Indexed searching is currently available only on Windows platforms. Adobe Reader 8.0 (available on Windows platforms) provides the capability to perform indexed searching. For more information, see "Indexed Searching with Adobe Reader 8.0," below. Some earlier versions of Adobe Reader provide indexed searching; however, some earlier versions provide only limited book-level search capabilities that do not take advantage of the compiled search index provided with the Abaqus PDF documentation. The following earlier versions of Adobe Reader provide indexed searching: -- Acrobat Reader 5.1 with Search and Accessibility

-- Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 with Search and Accessibility -- Acrobat Reader 4.05 with Search For information on indexed searching with these earlier versions, refer to Acrobat Reader Help for each version. Indexed Searching with Adobe Reader 8.0 --------------------------------------Adobe Reader 8.0 (available on Windows platforms) provides the capability to perform indexed searching when you use the advanced search options. By default, when you select Edit->Search in Adobe Reader 8.0, the basic search options are displayed in the Search PDF pane and you can search the current PDF document or search a folder containing the entire PDF collection; however, the search process may be very slow. It is recommended that you set a preference to always use the advanced search options. After you set the search option preference, you must select the index that you want to search. Once the index has been selected, Adobe Reader saves the selection and you can proceed with your search. For information on searching techniques, see Adobe Reader Help. Note: To use indexed searching, you must open Adobe Reader 8.0 from your desktop rather than from within your web browser. See Adobe Reader Help for more information. If you are using a 64-bit version of Internet Explorer as your web browser, this rule does not apply. To set up indexed searching of the Abaqus 6.9 PDF documentation in Adobe Reader 8.0: 1. Select Edit->Preferences, select Search from the list on the left, select the option Always use advanced search options, and click OK. 2. Select Edit->Search to display the advanced search options. 3. From the Look In list of options, select Select Index. 4. In the Index selection dialog box, do the following: a. Select the "Abaqus 6.9 PDF Documentation" index. b. If the index is not listed, click Add, locate the 69_index.pdx file, and click Open. c. Verify that no other indexes are selected. d. Click OK to close the Index selection dialog box. For further details on searching the Abaqus PDF documentation, see Chapter 6, "Searching the PDF documentation," of Using Abaqus Online Documentation.
