Course Syllabus
Art is a 12 week course.
Course Description: This course will cover basic two and three dimensional techniques. This will be accomplished through demonstrations, presentations and instructional video. Students will be learning the elements of arts and the principles of design and how they relate to art. Assignments: Assignments will be given and posted in the art room and on SchoolView. Due dates will be assigned to each assignment and will be adhered to unless otherwise informed. It is the responsibility of the student to get their work done without falling behind on the next assignment. If you cannot complete a project or assignment on time, it is your responsibility to speak with me about an extension. Unexcused or missing work will result in an incomplete or failing grade. Grading: Students will be graded according to their comprehension of the issues and assignments presented in class, their solution to the assignments and their general effort (please see attached Grading Criteria rubric). Active participation is required in critiques and discussion. The standard grading scale will be used to calculate final grades. 100%-90%=A, 89%-80%=B, 79%-70%=C, 69%-60%=D, below=F Grades will be posted on SchoolView as quickly as I can get them up. Attendance: Attendance, punctuality, and productive participation are required. Attendance may be taken at any time during the class period. If a student misses a class, it is the students responsibility to get the assignment from the instructor or a fellow class student. It is also the students responsibility to get notes on missed presentations or demonstrations. Students are expected to attend class with all material needed for the assignment at hand.

Grading Criteria

If the student cannot make the due date based onclass work time, he/she will need to take the project home to complete it. If materials cannot be taken home, the student will need to make an appointment to complete the project before and/or after school. In Class Work grades will include exercises practiced in class leading up to larger projects, writing assignments and other various class assignments. The grades will be calculated on the students material usage, creativity, and thinking outside the box. In addition, the students grade will be calculated based on Participation grades. These grades will be given based on the students ability to participate in class work, effort, use of time, and remain on task. Students are expected to remain on task for the entire period.

GRADING POLICY INFORMATION

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me; the quickest way is through email: sschiebe@hastings.k12.mn.us. I strongly encourage you to use the assignment book your child brings home to check due dates on assignments. Enough studio class time will be given for every assignment. Students are expected to use the time wisely or they will find that they wont finish the work as expected. Students: If you need extra time you may get a pass from me to come to the classroom during your study hall. Art is a 12-week (one trimester subject). After 6 weeks a mid-term grade will be posted online for you and your parents to see. Therefore, there are two firm deadlines in the semester. *You may hand in work up to 3 school days after the due date and still earn full credit. *After the 3 days, work will drop one grade. You can still hand in any work until Tuesday, October 15 for the mid-term grade with just the one grade drop. After that date, it turns to a 0 and cannot be made up. DATES TO REMEMBER: Tuesday, October 15: All work from the first half of the trimester due or it turns to a 0 and cannot be made up. Friday, October 18: Mid-term grades posted. Wednesday, November 27: All work from the second half of the trimester due or it turns to a 0 and cannot be made up. Wednesday, November 27: Last day of art class.
