COURSE DESCRIPTION This course focuses on how people behave in organizations and groups. Topics include leadership, motivation, organizational culture, and roles within groups. OBJECTIVES Students will examine the real challenge of organizational behavior in managing the uncertainty, conflict and complexities of organizational life. Students will gain an understanding of how globalization affects the behavior or organizations in this competitive marketplace. Students will understand what goes on in the minds of managers and employees when they interact in organizations. Students will examine the affects of technological changes on an organization as well as ways the organization will face technological changes in the future. Students will identify, integrate and apply sound ideas and best practices in managing human capital in organizations. Students will identify various leadership approaches and describe specific behaviors they believe will be most successful in their industry in the future. INSTRUCTIONAL Class instruction consists of a combination of lectures, class METHODS discussions, projects, homework assignments, group and individual assignments. Academic integrity includes a commitment to not engage in or tolerate acts of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty involves one of the following: 1) cheating on an examination or quiz; 2) buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting any material purported to be the unreleased contents of a forthcoming examination, or the use of such material; 3) substituting for another person during an examination or allowing such substitution for ones self; 4) plagiarizing, the act of appropriating passages from the work of another individual, either word for word or in substance, and representing them as ones own work; 5) colluding with another person in the preparation or editing of assignments submitted for credit, unless such collaboration has been approved in advance by the instructor; 6) copying the institutions software without permission of the copyright holder or placing personal software on the institutions computers or damaging or destroying software or computers; and other forms of academic dishonesty include selling or purchasing examinations, papers or other assignments and submitting or resubmitting the same paper for two different classes without explicit authorization. When an instructor suspects academic or non-academic dishonesty, the faculty member will exercise her/his academic judgment in light of the particular circumstances and the students academic history. Consultation with the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and/or the department chair throughout the process is encouraged. ATTENDANCE Good academic standing requires the presence of students at all classes. Therefore, attendance at VIU is mandatory. There are only two acceptable reasons for absence from class or lab: 1) serious illness on the part of the student or 2) a family emergency. Students are still responsible for timely completion of homework missed during an absence. Attendance will be in accordance with University policies and grades will conform to

those stated policies. Excused absences not exceeding 3 sessions (classes) for the semester or term should not negatively impact a students final grade, as long as the student makes up any missed work. Both excused and unexcused absences in excess of 6 sessions (classes) will result in automatic failure of the course, unless the student withdraws before the last day to withdraw from a course, in which case the students record will show a W for the course. For unexcused (undocumented) absences no make-up work is permitted. Absence for unexcused reasons may negatively affect the students final course grade. All students are expected to arrive to class on time. Late attendance is disruptive to both the instructor and to classmates. Cell phones must be turned off in class. No computers in class unless specified by professor. Virginia International University is committed to ensuring that all of its facilities and programs are accessible to all persons. Attachment A: Assignments and Course Calendar/Schedule All work must be turned in on time according to the following schedule. No credit will be given for late assignments. Schedule and activities may be subject to change. Consult the class web site for the latest information. Plagiarism will result in a grade of 0.
