INTERNSHIP
Performance Evaluation and Implementation of Different Multi Hop Duplex Models Guide: Prof. Robert Schober, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada Technical

(May11-Aug11)

Proposed a new model with N relays for both Full and Half Duplex taking into account all the interferences possible. Discovered a mathematical expression for calculating outage probability of proposed Multi Hop Full Duplex Model. Formulation of outage probability for Realistic Half Duplex Model (i.e. with interferences present) for L time slots. Simulation and Performance Evaluation of the proposed Half and Full Duplex models in terms of outage probability for different number of relays and time slots and for different values of SNR. Concluded that for lower values of SNR (upto 15 dB), Full Duplex outperforms Half Duplex model and performance of system increases with increase in Number of Relays in terms of Outage Probability. Optimized power allocated to different relays to maximize the performance of the model using Lagrange Multiplier. Paper in preparation for IEEE journal of wireless communication. Non Technical Proposed a new model with N relays for both Full and Half Duplex taking into account all the interferences possible. Discovered a new mathematical expression for calculating outage probability of both Half and Full Duplex Model. Approximately 50% increase in performance for SNR=15 dB by using proposed model in terms of outage probability.

Noise Reduction from an Audio File :: Guide: Prof. Naren Naik, IIT Kanpur

(March11-June11)

Technical Implemented four different algorithms (Two Step Noise Reduction, Harmonic Regeneration and Geometrical Approach) to reduce noise from audio files of SNR levels 5 dB, 10 dB, 15 dB and 20 dB in different noises (such as airport, train etc.). Evaluated and Compared performances of different algorithms using ITU_T P.835 methodology and concluded that: For Signal Distortion measure, Geometric approach performs better than other two for low SNR values. For Noise Distortion measure, Harmonic Regeneration outperforms other two algorithms. For Overall Distortion measure, Geometric approach was better than rest of the algorithms. Non Technical Implemented algorithms to reduce noise from audio files in different noisy environments such as airport, train, babble. Evaluated the performance using ITU_T P.835 methodology and got a significantly high score of 3.5 on a scale of 5.

Real Time Hand Gesture Recognition :: Guide: Prof. R.M.K. Sinha, IIT Kanpur

(Aug10-Dec10)

Technical Designed a program to recognize 20 different hand gestures from a real time video and implemented Sign Language. Used HSV domain and Motion Detection algorithms for light intensity free and better extraction of hand from images. Radial Histogram features, Template matching, PCA together is used to recognize different hand gestures with an accuracy over 96% in real time. Introduced new concept for artificial generation of large and diverse hand datasets (generating 1000 different gestures from only 10 gestures) for better training of system. Proposed a new idea of Multiple View Point concept which increased the feature space and resulted in more robust and better classification of hand gestures. Non Technical Designed a program to recognize 20 different hand gestures from a real time video and implemented Sign Language. Introduced two new concepts artificial generation of datasets and Multiple viewpoint resulting in accuracy over 96%.

Number Plate Extraction of a Vehicle :: Guide: Prof. K.S.Venkatesh, IIT Kanpur

(May10-July10)

Technical Detected number plates of static vehicles taken from different angles under different illumination levels. Implemented an innovative method to extract regions with high density of edges based on morphological operations, convolution and Histogram equalization and independent of any colour based information.

Got an accuracy of more than 89% in detecting number plates from vehicles even in different environmental conditions. Planning with mentor Prof. K.S.Venkatesh to use this project for IIT Kanpur surveillance system. Non Technical Used a novel approach of convolution, morphological operations on vehicle image to extract number plate from it. Got an accuracy over 89% in different environmental conditions and planning to use it for IITK surveillance system.
