Local strike bites

The countrywide NUMSA strike also affected local filling stations this week. Some filling stations saw pump attendants in normal clothes, reports of minor intimidation were received and overall everybody who had to fill up a vehicle had experienced some form of difficulty. In the photograph (supplied by Magaba Filling Station), Mrs Alida Lourens is striking a smile while filling up a car with the NUMSA group in the background. Magaba Filling Station is one of the filling stations where non NUMSA members tried their hands in filling up vehicles with petrol and diesel. More photographs on page 2.

Communities march

Anglo American Platinum and African Rainbow Minerals joint venture at Modikwa Platinum Mine at Maandagshoek near Burgersfort endured the wrath of the community this week when a group of villagers marched upon the mine. The march, headed by representatives of three sections of a Maandagshoek village were armed with memoranda to present to mine and company representatives. The usual gripes between communities and mines surfaced again, such as local employment by the mine, the awarding of tenders to entrepreneurs and companies within the villages and in this case, representation in the Section 21 company that handles the affairs of the community. Villagers were also not happy with the community liaison representatives who must interact between them and the company. Several demands in this regard are contained in the three memoranda. Police were also present and the march dispersed peacefully.

Modikwas comment
Modikwa Platinum Mine acknowledges that unemployment is a challenge in the neighbouring communities. The Mine is committed to local employment, with more emphasis placed on the seven host communities and currently has 55% of its workforce coming from Sekhukhune District Municipality. Furthermore the mine is running skills development programmes that assist in preparing locals for the mining job market, we currently have 81 millwrights learners, and are in the process of engaging 30 Multi-Tasking Cadets. Modikwa has recently signed off a local procurement policy which aims to improve access to procurement opportunities. As at end of August 2013, the Mine has done business with 25 100% black owned companies from Greater Tubatse Municipality to the value of R43 Million and R25 Million with black empowered companies ( above 25% black shareholding) bringing our local spend to R68 Million year to date. The mine is committed to continuous engagement with communities and would like to encourage all community members to raise issues through the elected community representatives.
