Chemistry Beyond Laboratory Have you ever wondered what is the significance & importance of chemistry outside our

classroom & laboratories? Why do we study chemistry? Probably not; because all we study in the books seems very boring & not relate to day to day life. Then lets take a dig & find out how we are touched by chemistry every breath we take, every inch we move & every glimpse we take. We find chemistry in daily life in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, our soap, 0ur emotions and literally every object we can see or touch. Everything is made of chemicals. We are made of chemicals. So are the animals. So is our desk. So is the sun. Drugs are chemicals. Food is made from chemicals. Many of the changes we observe in the world around us are caused by chemical reactions. Examples include changing colors of leaves, cooking food and getting clean. Our entire universe is made up of matter which is constantly changing forms and evolving into other forms of energy Why do onions make us cry? Can you imagine answer to this question lies in chemistry. Take a look here. When we cut an onion, we break cells, releasing their contents. Amino acid sulfoxides form sulfenic acids. Enzymes that were kept separate now are free to mix with the sulfenic acids to produce propanethiol S-oxide, a volatile sulfur compound that wafts upward toward our eyes. This gas reacts with the water in our tears to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid burns, stimulating our eyes to release more tears to wash the irritant away. Now we know the reason for crying how to avoid it? the answer again lies in chemistry. Aside from wearing safety goggles or running a fan, we can keep from crying by refrigerating our onion before cutting it (slows reactions and changes the chemistry inside the onion) or by cutting the onion under water. Other examples of chemistry we see in everyday life are: 1. Water, which is one of the most important part of our live and occupies 70% of the earth's surface is made by two chemical elements, hydrogen and oxygen 2.

Soap is an emulsifier which allows oil and water to mix and so the oily mixtures on body and clothes can be removed after application of soap and water. 19. Chemistry is the reason why vegetables are colored. Colored vegetables consist of chemical compounds called carotenoids which have an area known as the chromophore. It absorbs certain wavelengths of light and thus there are colored vegetables. 20. Food is cooked because of the steam that's present either in the water added or that which is present inside the food items 21. We feel hungry because of the satiety center in your brain falls short of particular hormones to function and then sends the signal of hunger. 22. 23. We fall in love, get attracted and have a feeling of belonging because of certain monoamines present in our brain which get stimulated through nerve sensors Likewise there are virtually unlimited examples of chemistry around us giving answers to many of trivial questions: o Why does ice float o How does soap clean o Why do leaves change colour o Is it possible to turn lead into gold o Why do people put salt on icy roads & so on It also tells us not to play with certain harmful chemicals found in our homes like air freshner, ammonia, antifreeze, bleach, laundry detergent, mothballs, motor oil, rat poison etc Therefore, knowing some chemistry can help us make day to day decisions that affect our life.

Chemistry can be a good and bad thing. Chemistry is good when you make love with it. Chemistry is bad when you make crack with it.
