Arunachal flood situation grim, one die

From our Correspondent ITANAGAR, September 6: Incessant dow npour since the past one w eek has triggered flood in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh w ith States major rivers including the Siang are in high spate affecting several villages, w hile a BRO personnel died follow ing landslide. With the mighty Siang flow ing above the danger mark due to torrential rains, several pockets of Pasighat in East Siang district are battling w ith a floodlike situation w ith the low lying areas such as SibokorongSiang confluence point, Komlighat, Raneghat, cremation ground getting inundated. According to official sources, flood situation in Mebo subdivision under East Siang district remained to be grim. The log bridge at Kadang has been w ashed aw ay. Surface communication along NH52 has also been disrupted in betw een Pasighat and Mebo as the approach of Siku bridge has been damaged badly by the overflow ing river w ater. East Siang Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Srivastava convened an emergency meeting at Pasighat yesterday w hich w as attended by SP Pushpendra Kumar and other departmental heads and discussed about availability of relief materials and flood preparedness, sources said. As a precautionary measure, the DC asked the people residing in low lying areas adjacent to the river to be careful, and closely monitor on every development. She further cautioned all not to go for boating or fishing in the river. The DC, how ever, informed that the authority is fully prepared and arrangement for temporary shelter is being made. At the same time, she instructed the officers of disaster management department, Army of Rayang division, police, medical, food and civil supply, w ater and sanitation and also road and transport departments to be prepared for any eventuality. Arunachal flood ... A report from Tezu, the headquarters of Lohit district informed that surface communication betw een Tezu and Tinsukia in Assam and Tezu to Hayuliang and Haw ai w as disrupted due to road blockade caused by raintriggered massive mudslides at 5 km point from Tohangam along TezuParsuram Kund road. This particular point remains prone to mudslides and is basis of hurdle for our labourers to clear the road. This point is so risky that even our machineries find tough to w ork, informed PK Gupta, OC 1446 Border Construction Company, Demw e. Putting their lives at risk, our personnel have been pressed into roundtheclock w ork to make the road through. But regrettably, w e lost one ML Sharma, mechanic incharge, w ho w as slipped out yesterday and plunged into the deep gorge from the point and is still untraceable, the OC lamented. He said that a team has been assigned to trace out the body but unfortunately, inclement w eather is not favouring rescue operation. The point remained cut off most of the time and still the personnel deployed at the site made through for few hours only. The situation may become grimmer if rains continue. Moreover, in the Alubari Ghat, people are not w illing to ferrying vehicles due to high spate of Lohit river and the commuters are being ferried in country boats putting their lives at peril. Flood w ater of Noa Dehing river had entered Dumpani and four other villages under Diyun circle of Changlang district as the river has breached the w et rice cultivation and village protection bund.
