Three teens arrested for auto thefts

A 17-year-old West Bend male and two 16year-old West Bend males were arrested in relation to three vehicles stolen from the area of the 1300 block of Hans Street Aug. 26, 27 and 28. They were taken into custody the morning following the third theft after they were involved in a retail theft incident at Walmart, 1515 W. Paradise Drive, and fleeing police. According to the police report: West Bend officers responded to a shoplifting report at 11:30 a.m. and observed two of the suspects exit the parking lot in the most recent stolen vehicle. Police initiated a stop; however, the driver sped off and left the city southbound on Highway 45. The pursuit continued to Jackson where the stolen vehicle exited Highway 45 eastbound onto Highway 60. The pursuit ended on Highway 60 just east of Highway 41 in Slinger when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail. The Jackson and Slinger police departments, and the county Sheriffs Department, assisted West Bend police in taking the two males into custody. The third male, one of the 16-year-olds, was arrested for retail theft. All three were determined to be responsible for the three motor vehicle thefts. Police seek man who posed as WeEnergies employee The West Bend Police Department received a complaint Aug. 26 of a male who was posing as a We Energies employee and attempting to collect a utility payment by credit card at the We Energies customer's residence. Investigation revealed the man was not a We-Energies employee. Similar fraudulent representations or scams have occurred in other jurisdictions in southeastern Wisconsin. In each instance the fake employee attempted to obtain credit card numbers from customers. We-Energies advised that they never collect payment from customers at a residence or in the field. The West Bend Police Department and WeEnergies encourages anyone who encounters this type of activity to contact their local law enforcement agency and do not provide any credit card information.

Putting the garden to bed

By Sam Erickson As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, youll probably be spending less time outdoors, which means less time in the garden. While there wont be the joy of watching things grow from seed to flower to fruit, there is plenty of work to do. Some people even argue that fall preparation is the most important thing you can do for a happy, productive garden in the spring. While the work is not as glamorous, these simple steps can help ensure produce next year. Clear away all of the garden debris. Removing debris gets rid of places where pests might try to overwinter. It will also keep diseased materials out of your garden and compost. Fall is an excellent time to incorporate compost or other organic matter into your soil. It will have time to decompose in place, providing a boost directly to your soils. If you want to keep fertilizing through the year, switch to a winter fertilizer, which is high in potassium and low in nitrogen. This will promote root growth instead of above-ground development pushed by nitrogen. While youll want to wait for heavy pruning of your trees and shrubs until they have gone fully dormant, you can clear out dead and diseased material in the fall, preventing it from spreading. Dip you shears in a diluted bleach solution in order to prevent the disease from spreading and prune back at least six inches from any diseased area. Mark your perennials and bulbs. If youve got a large garden, it can be difficult to remember exactly where your plants will be coming up. This has led some gardeners to dig up perfectly good bulbs that they actually enjoy in pursuit of the next years plans. Gardening is often an act in patience, and you dont want to undermine your own work. In addition to taking care of your plants and your beds, youll want to take care of your garden tools. Remove caked mud from the blades of your tools with a little steel wool, and then prepare a mixture of lubricating oil and sand. You can keep your blades and other metal garden tools in good shape by plunging them into this mixture. It will keep your tools clean, sharp and devoid of rust as long as you keep the mix in a cool, dry place for the winter. If youve still got tools with wooden handles, you can use linseed oil to keep them from drying out in the winter. There are countless things to be done in the garden year-round. Dont let a little autumn wind keep you from the kind of fall garden improvement that will pay big dividends in the spring. Whether you are gardening for beauty and color or hardy vegetables, a few garden chores now will pay off later with healthier, happier plants and a more robust garden.

Get out the blanket for your house

By Sam Erickson With colder temperatures coming, you might be thinking about making some additions that will help your home and your pocketbook get through the winter unscathed. Many people automatically think of drafty places in the home like doorsills or older windows. Its a great idea to pay attention to these, but insulation actually has a much greater effect. Rather than a quick draft, poor insulation is like a slow sieve, leaking energy at every surface of your home. Fall is the perfect time to install more insulation in your home. . The first step is to find out how much insulation you actually have. Crawl up in to your attic and look at the depth of the insulation there. That can offer you a clue about the quality of the rest of the insulation in your home. There are also numerous organizations that will come out and do a home energy audit for you. Having an energy audit is a good idea for a number of reasons, including the fact that it will reveal the quality of insulation in hard-to-check places like inside your walls. These days, youve got several options for home insulation. Most people think of giant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts are still readily available. Made of fiberglass or rock wool, they are easy to install and relatively cheap. They are also cut to standard widths to fit between wall studs or floor joists in the ceiling. You might also look into professional installation of loose-fill, rigid foam or foam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insulation can be blown into place, making it useful for odd-shaped places like roofs or ducting where it can be difficult to install other kinds of insulation. Rigid foam can be applied to exterior walls and has a higher Rrating based on thickness. Each type of insulation is given an R-rating, essentially a measure of how much resistance to heat flow the product has. As

Prep football: Falls defense stymies East

Key defensive plays in the second quarter gave Menomonee Falls a lead it would never relinquish Aug. 30 as the Indians defeated West Bend East 42-7. Menomonee Falls had a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. On the Suns first possession of the second quarter, Ty Weber stepped in front of a East pass and returned it 40 yards to give Menomonee Falls a 210 lead. East responded with an eight play drive that started at its 41-yard line and got as close as the Menomonee Falls 5 yard line. The drive was stopped by a Jason Precia interception in the end zone, with Precia returning the ball to the Indians 19 yard line. Menomonee Falls then responded with a four play drive that was finished by a 25-yard run by Bryce McMurtry. East's lone score came with 5:43 left in the game as Seth Schrank connected with Ian Loveland on a 19 yard pass play. Germantown 24, Hartford 7 (Aug. 29): Hartford took advantage of an interception to begin a 4-play drive at their own 36-yard line early in the second quarter. A long pass play from Tommy Noenning to Ethan Willer put the Orioles at the Germantown 1-yard line, and Noenning ran the ball at the 9:33 mark. Whitefish Bay 17, Slinger 0: Thomas Lofy ran for 146 yards on 26 carries for the Owls. Greendale Martin Luther 14, Kettle Moraine Lutheran 13: The Chargers took a 13-8 lead at the 3:54 mark of the third quarter after Jared Henning and Brandon Shiley connected on an 11-yard pass play. However, a 2-point attempt after the touchdown failed. Michael Shaw then scored for the Spartans with 9:16 left in the game to give Martin Luther a 14-13. Luther's 2-point attempt also failed. Ithaca 48, Living Word Lutheran 40: The Timberwolves rallied late in the game, as Cam Werner scored on a 31-yard run with 1 minute remaining. But Living Word could not get any closer.

...Different types of insulation

From page 7
you do your research, youll quickly learn the R-values of different types of insulation. Remember that these are based on depth as well, and the resistance to heat will change based on how much material you put into your house. Each region of the country has different recommendations for the amount of insulation you should have, so check with your contractor before proceeding to maximize your investment. Insulation is one of the most effective ways you can reduce your energy expenditures, offering a much faster return on your investment than other options. In addition to keeping your home warm in the winter, insulation can keep the heat out in the summer, doubling your investment. Once youve completed your renovation, you can cozy up for the winter under the new blanket for your house.
