Hamilton board member questions staterequired assessments at kindergarten level
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR
A Hamilton School Board member last week questioned a new state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) assessment for students at the lower elementary grade levels. I think some of the problems we have in the schools is let kids be kids first and then let them grow up a little bit, board member Michael Hyland said during the Sept. 4 meeting. Hyland spoke during a discussion on an update to the district assessment program. According to a report to the board from Supervisor of Instructional Services Katherine R. Little, the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is requiring students from 4-year-old kindergarten to first grade to participate in the fall and spring PALS early literacy assessment. All second grade students will be required to participate in the PALS assessment in the 2014-15 school year. Teachers involved in the assessment are required to participate in two hours of online training which deal with administration and scoring and online score entry and reporting system training. Little said teachers who have undergone the training have reported the training takes more than two hours. Little said the district analyzed kindergarten benchmarks assessments to determine how much overlap there was with the PALS assessment. As a result of discussions with teaching staff, one benchmark was eliminated.

During board discussion, board member Michael Hyland said he was concerned with another mandate from the DPI requiring to assess K-4 students. Theyre 4-years-old, why cant kids learn to be kids first instead of testing them? Little said PALS is not a test, but an early literacy assessment that helps the district at the 4and 5-year-old kindergarten levels. The information identifies where students are doing well and where they are struggling. That information is then used by teachers to adjust the instruction. While its another mandate, it could have been a lot worse, Little said. This is probably okay. Hyland added that he doesnt have much faith in the DPI telling everybody how to do things. Hyland said his concern is that the district will be giving a report a few years from now where it will have to make changes because other school districts did well on such assessments. Board member Gerald Schmitz added the assessments catch potential problems early on, especially in reading. That will allow the district to response and address problems earlier.

ous technology upgrades for the Hamilton School District. The Hamilton School Board was updated on recent updates and upgrades. If you play a musical instrument, share your talent! Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years old, however families are welcome. Deliver Books and Form Friendships, Menomonee Falls The Menomonee Falls Public Library offers delivery service to homebound patrons in the community. This combined hazardous waste collection and mattress recycling collection event is a coordinated effort between Midwest Mattress Recovery, the City of Oconomowoc and the Waukesha County recycling program. We are excited to offer this first ever opportunity for our residents to properly dispose of both hazardous waste as well as recycle old mattresses and box springs, stated Rebecca Mattano, Solid Waste Supervisor for Waukesha County. When Bob Mudler, founder and owner of Midwest Mattress Recovery, first approached us about hosting a mattress recycling collection event, it only seemed logical to provide it as an added benefit to an already known special one-day hazardous waste collection event. Old, unusable chemicals, pesticides, wood preservatives, solvents, oil-based paints, and mercury-containing products will be accepted for proper hazardous waste disposal. Latex paint and non-hazardous cleaning materials will not be accepted. Waukesha County also has four yearround household hazardous waste collection sites located in Muskego, Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, and Franklin. For more information, including a detailed list of acceptable household hazardous waste materials visit www.waukeshacounty.gov/hazardouswaste or call 262-896-8300. Fast start lifts Falls past West Bend East

Menomonee Falls offense and defense got off to a fast start on the way to a 42-7 win over West Bend East Aug. 30. Adam Vechart got the Indians on the board at the 10:40 mark with a 1-yard run that finished off the Indians opening drive. While East recovered a fumble on Menomonee Falls next drive, the defense held and forced a punt. The Indians then took advantage of their third possession of the game to start a 10 -play drive on their 28 yard line, which ended with a 4-yard run by Bryce McMurtry at the 2:22 mark of the first quarter. On the Suns first possession of the second quarter, Ty Weber stepped in front of a East pass and returned it 40 yards to give Menomonee Falls a 21-0 lead. East responded with an eight play drive that started at its 41-yard line and got as close as the Menomonee Falls 5 yard line. The drive was stopped by a Jason Precia interception in the end zone, with Precia returning the ball to the Indians 19 yard line. Menomonee Falls then responded with a four play drive that was finished by a 25yard run by Bryce McMurtry with 6 minutes left in the quarter. "Our defense made some big plays, they actually got on the field quite a bit in the first half," Menomonee Falls Coach John Baker said, noting how the defense was back on the field after the interception return. "Our defense did a great job all game." Baker added that his offense was better this week as the execution of plays was improved and put together several successful drives. In addition, the pass protection was good and Baker was able to rotate linemen throughout the game. "They just jelled tonight and played really well," he said. Menomonee Falls other scores came on a 10-yard run by McMurtry with 1:17 left in the second quarter and a 1-yard run by Dontrell Handy at the 3:26 mark of the third quarter. East's lone score came with 5:43 left in the game as Seth Schrank connected with Ian Loveland on a 19 yard pass play. Sussex Hamilton 49, Milwaukee Morse/Marshall Co-op 0: Hamilton opened the scoring as Ian Webb returned a pun 52 yards for a touchdown at the 9:44 mark. Drew Patterson scored on touchdown runs of 2, 3 and 50 yards, Travis Jarus scored on a 7-yard run while Dan Lunowa scored on a 1-yard run. Hamilton's other score came on a 38-yard pass play from Mike Barnes to Ryan Warzon. Greendale Martin Luther 14, Kettle Moraine Lutheran 13: The Chargers took a 13-8 lead at the 3:54 mark of the third quarter after Jared Henning and Brandon Shiley connected on an 11-yard pass play. However, a 2-point attempt after the touchdown failed. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Girls volleyball: Falls second at Joust

Menomonee Falls advanced to the title game of the Thomas More/Homestead Joust Aug. 31 before losing to East Troy, 23-25, 25-17, 11-15. Menomonee Falls opened the tournament Aug. 30 with wins over Germantown (25-20, 27-25), Watertown (25-17, 25-20) and Waukesha West (25-15, 25-17) on Aug. 30. In pool play at the start of Aug. 31, Menomonee Falls posted wins over Muskego (14-25, 29-27, 15-11) and Pius XI (25-18, 25-15). Menomonee Falls then beat West Bend East in the semifinal 25-12, 2519. The second place at the Joust is an improvement on last year's fifth place finish. Menomonee Falls enters the season with a few new players playing key roles in the center and on the right side, blending with returning starters. "We'll only keep getting better. We missed a lot of serves today. If we don't miss a lot of serves, we've even in a better place," Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said. Bruns then praised East Troy, a rising Division 2 program which knocked off several Division 1 programs to take the Joust title. "They played awesome and they deserve it," he said. Menomonee Falls started Greater Metro Conference play with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 win at Wauwatosa East Sept. 4. Germantown opened North Shore Conference play with a 25-16, 28-26, 2514 win over Whitefish Bay Sept. 3 The Warhawks lost the bronze title match at the Joust to Arrowhead, 25-20, 30-28. During the tournament Germantown lost to Menomonee Falls, Divine Savior Holy Angels and West Bend East while posting wins over Waukesha West, Pius XI and Watertown. Hamilton opened the Greater Metro Conference portion of the season with a 1225, 15-25, 20-25 loss to Brookfield Central Sept. 4.
