The Task Critical Editions are excellent supplements for literature and are often used by students to aid in both a deeper understanding of a literary work and to locate foundational scholarship for their own research projects. Your group project this semester will entail creating a Critical Edition of a major literary work specifically for Lamar students who will take British Literature in the next years. The Lamar Critical Edition you create will include six components: a preface to the overall project, 6 pivotal scholarly articles, a literature review and abstracts for the scholarly articles, a student component that includes your major research essays for the semester, an introduction to the student component, and a study guide for the text. Details on these components is in the section Understanding the Components below. The Audience Your audience is the future students taking British Literature. As you prepare your critical edition, keep in mind your own experiences in the course and with the text specifically. Lamar Critical Editions should benefit the audience as they use your Critical Edition to accompany their own reading and research. Understanding the Components The Lamar Critical Edition is comprised of six components, each with specific requirements. Pay close attention to the requirements below and the requirements and recommendations for dividing the project equally. During the semester, we will discuss, in class, each of these components in detail. Project Preface The preface introduces your reader to the project as a whole. This preface introduces the reader to your Lamar Critical Edition and the components contained within your group project. The preface includes summaries of each section as well as an introduction to the literary work. Length: 2-3 single-spaced pages. Literature Review and Abstracts for Scholarly Articles The literature review introduces your reader to the scholarly discussions about your literary work and introduces the scholarly articles presented in the next section. The literature review presents a synthesized discussion of the major scholars and their arguments so that the reader has a larger context for the student works. The literature review also frames the selected scholarly articles detailing a chosen theme (if your group elects to work with one) and/or a rationale for including these scholarly pieces. Length: 2-3 single-spaced pages.

The abstracts present a summary of an individual articles argument and main points. The abstract provides enough information for a reader to determine if the article will further their understanding of the work, but does not contain copious amounts of information. Length: 1/2 single-spaced page per abstract. Six Scholarly Articles The six scholarly articles included are those framed in the literature review and for which abstracts are included. These articles should be available to your audience either as open access articles or through the library databases. The articles should be included in the order discussed in the literature review. Introduction to Student Essays The introduction provides an overview of the student papers that follow. This introduction should include overviews of the articles presented and should frame these essays in terms of the course, the literature, the assignment, and the scholarship presented in the previous section. Length: 2-3 single-spaced pages. Collection of Student Essays This portion of the collection contains the major papers written by each group member for the course paper assignment. These essays should be included in the order in which they are discussed in the introduction. Study Guide The specific purpose of the study guide is to aid students in preparing for an exam. This material should supplement the reading of the text, not serve as a substitute for reading. As such, prepare the study guide to cover the main points and important information that a student should know to succeed on an exam. Do not provide answers to the study guide; rather, think of this as a series of questions the reader can answer as they work through the Norton introduction to the author and literary work and the work itself. Length: 20-30 questions. Please leave adequate space for a student to write the answer after each question. A Note on Groups This project was designed for a group, but with the unpredictability of the group in mind. A perfect group works together from beginning to end, meets group-set deadlines, and takes on the responsibility for the entire project. However, not all groups are perfect groups. I am well aware of potential problems that may arise in the completion of this project, and I have planned accordingly. Your grade for this project will come as both individual and group grades. What follows is a breakdown of these grades. Individual Grades (based on the quality and completion of your individual portions of the group project). These grades are based specifically on the materials you submit for the group project. Selected Component [one of the following: project preface, literature review, OR introduction to student papers] 30% of project grade

2 abstracts with submission of 2 scholarly articles 20% project grade Collaboration and timeliness 20% project grade Submission of your essay [note this grade is separate from the group grade, but not submitting this to the group project will result in a letter grade deduction from your essay grade] Group Grades (based on the quality and completion of your individual portions of the group project). These grades are based on the group materials presented for the project. Study guide 20% project grade Professionalism and completion of the final product 10% project grade We will discuss grading and assessment more as you progress through the group projects. However, you have the responsibility to notify me if a member of a group is not pulling his weight in the group. This can be a matter such as not assisting with the study guide or not submitting materials according to the group timeline. Do not wait until the last minute to notify me; if you notify me when the problem occurs, I have a better chance of helping the group resolve this problem. If you wait too late, the group professionalism grade will be affected. Final Product You will submit to me a professionally bound hard copy The hard copy will include a cover, title page, and table of contents to accompany the materials submitted. I encourage you to take this work seriously not only because it comprises your professionalism grade, but also because groups scoring an overall A on the project will be invited to submit a digital version of the complete work to be used as a course supplement in future courses. The documents should all be single-spaced, in 12-point, Times New Roman font. The first page of each document should have the title of the piece centered, and be followed by the authors name centered on the next line. Then, place one blank line and begin the text. Your document will be numbered as a single document with the first page following the table of contents as Page 1. The preface should be numbered using lower case Roman numerals.
