How to Install Mac OSX on Eee 1000H

(shout out goes to maceee.com for a lot of the material here)

Ingredients

1. Eee 1000H, with power brick

2. iDeneb 10.5.4 DVD
2a. (optional) Shinrai's SupportDVD
3. External USB DVD Drive
4. A couple of free hours

Bios Mod

This mod is required in order to boot into OSX, otherwise you get kernel panics or
the screen getting stuck in the gray Apple logo. Unless this was performed by me,
do at your own risk. Though, I've reflashed a unit several times and had no
problem. Just make sure the BIOS you are using is a complete download.

1. Plug in your DVD Drive into your Eee. I am assuming you have an XP version
here, so boot into Windows now. Linux users, please consult your manual
2. Copy the BIOS Rom under the OSXonEEE folder in the SupportDVD to your desktop.
Filename is 1000HBIOS.ROM.
2a. You can also download it here: http://osrom.net/biosmod/ Make sure to
choose the 1000H link and unzip it to your desktop
3. Run Programs > Asus > Asus Update for EeePC > AsusUpdate.
3a. If you want, choose Save BIOS to File if you want a copy of the original
BIOS. I recommend saving it to an external drive like a flash USB
4. Choose Update Bios from File and pick the ROM file from 2. If you downloaded
the file, the extension should be .ROM
5. Restart and wait until it completes loading.

Pre-Install Config

Take note that this install will wipe our your entire HDD. You can use the Asus
Recovery Disk if you want to go back to using XP.

1. Insert the iDeneb DVD into the DVD Drive and reboot.
2. Rapidly hit F2 on boot to enter the BIOS
3. Go to Advanced > Onboard Devices Configuration and Enable everything.
4. Hit F10 to save the changes and reboot.
5. Rapidly hit Esc on boot and choose the DVD drive when prompted
6. When you see the menu bar on the initial install screen, go to Utilities > Disk
Utility.
7. Click on your disk and and under Partition, click on the Volume Scheme drop
down and choose 1 Partition. This guide assumes one partition on the entire drive.
8. Click Options and pick GUID Partition Table. Make sure that the drive is
formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You may also rename your drive here if
you want.
9. Click Apply and wait for a minute or so to finish the format. Click the red
button to close the utility.
10. Back to the main install screen, follow the screens. On the last screen, click
Customize and check on the following:
10a. Expand by clicking the triangle for Patches then Chipsets and check
ICHx Fixed.
10b. Expand the triangle for Kernel and check Kernel 9.4.0 Vanilla.
10c. Expand the triangle for Network then Wireless and check Broadcom.
10d. Expand the triangle for Fix and check both FireWire Remove and
ApplePS2Controller
10e. Expand the triangle for Video, then the triangle for Intel. Finally,
check the box for GMA950.
11. Click Continue and you can Skip DVD verification in the next screen if you
want to install faster. Install takes around 30 minutes. Afterwards, reboot into
Mac OSX.
12. On reboot, finish the initial setup for your Mac.
12a. When you get to the screen asking for your network connection, choose
the one that says you have none.
12b. Skip the registration screen by hitting Alt + Q on the necessary
screen.
12c. When creating your account, make sure you include a password.

Troubleshooting:
Q: My install screen and progress bar disappeared after clicking Continue on the
last screen. What do I do?
A: Just start again, but you don't need to reformat the drive again. Haven't found
a fix for this yet so the best bet is to go back to step 1.

Q: I can't seem to get past the screen for Migration Assistant. It loops back to
the start. Help!
A: Enable webcam on the Bios. Plugging in an external camera might work as well
but I'm not sure since I don't have one for testing right now.

Drivers and Fixes

1. Insert the SupportDVD and copy the entire OSXonEEE folder onto your desktop.
1a. If you don't have it, you can get the files at the links below. Extract as
needed:
http://www.maceee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/maceeedotcompatches.zip
http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/Ralink_CardBusPCI_D2860-
1.0.1.0_D61-1.0.4.0_D2560-1.0.9.0%20UI-1.5.1.0_2008_03_13.dmg
http://rapidshare.com/files/143996649/Wifi_On.zip.html
2. Run the AboutThisMac package found in the folder.
3. Copy the Kext Helper to your Applications folder and launch it.
4. Drag the drivers (all the .kext files) in the OSXonEEE folder and drop it into
the Kext Helper app window. Enter your password on the blank to run the tool and
reboot.
5. Open the WifiUtility.dmg in the folder (or the Ralink dmg file for those that
downloaded it) and go to CardbusPCIWireless-10.5 folder and run
CardbusPCIWireless-Leopard.
6. Reboot after and launch System Preferences to check if the wifi is detected. It
will show as an Ethernet connection. You can rename it to Wifi if you wish.
6a. To use wifi, you need to launch the program named
WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI which is a big R+ in your Applications folder
6b. Toggle the device on and off under the Advanced tab and make sure you've
turned on the wifi in the Bios
6c. Click on the Site Survey tab and click on your Wifi SSID. Click Refresh if
it does not show up. You can also enter the password if you have one in the next
screen.
6d. You can also create a profile so you don't need to choose your SSID each
time. Click on the SSID and then Add Profile. Enter the necessary details and in
Profile, Activate it.
7. If you have a SupportDVD, drag the Wifi On app to your Applications folder or
your Dock. This will automate the wifi toggle for you.
Alternatively, you can set it as a Login item so you don't need to launch it
everytime you boot.
Btw, make sure you go to System Preferences > Universal Access and check Enable
Assistive Devices to make this app work.
8. Install CHUD and restart. You can get it from the Apple Developer site or just
download it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/158600679/CHUDswitch.zip
NOTE: Discard the switch file, we don't need it.
9. Install AppleAzalia and restart. Get it here,
http://www.mediafire.com/?enez1guzz1g
10. Copy Audieee (from http://www.elroyonline.com/misc/eeepc/Audieee_1.0.1.zip)
and save it to your Applications folder.
Put it in your dock and make it Open at Login. You can disable and switch between
headphones and speakers with this app.

Other Fixes

1. If you want to display folders before files like in Windows, go here for a
tutorial:
http://blog.lipsiasoft.com/articles/2007/11/05/en-finder-order-directory-before-
files
2. From Finder, drag the Applications folder (not from the sidebar, from the main
window) to the right part of your dock for easy access to your apps. You can do
the same for other folders.
3. You may want to swap your Win and Alt keys at the left side of the space bar in
your keyboard. Using a firm flat object, pop up the key but take care not to
damage it. Should pop off easily. Then snap the key onto the right location. You
can do the same for the right Alt and Context Menu (Right Click) key
4. Turn off Software Update in System Preferences.
5. To install programs, either drag the app to the Applications folder or run the
installer script. Most are easy to install and are helpful enough for easy use
6. Consider upgrading RAM for better performance (swapping ram not covered in this
guide)
7. Download On Wake which you can get here
http://www.mhtc.net/~bunnz/onwake/onwake.html and follow the instructions how to
place
an app to run on wake. I recommend adding the Wifi On app to On Wake.
