1. Get a USB DVD drive - if you don't have one, read the end of this post on ways around it.
2. Download Ubuntu (linux) and burn an image to DVD or copy to a thumb drive (1GB will do) -

see end of post for thumb drive info.
Joined: Thu Jan 01, 2009 8:01 3. Buy a copy of Leopard. You won’t use it, but it’s the right thing to do.
pm 4. You’ll need a special Leopard build titled “MSI WINDos x86”, of which the Hackint0sh
Posts: 10
Location: Maple Valley, WA community should be credited for assembling. It's a slipstreamed "Kalyway" build which includes
Netbooks: MSI Wind U-100 all the proper Kexts, drivers, Kernel modifications, and other files necessary to achieve a fully
432US
working installation on the MSI wind. It's in all the typical shady places on the net.
5. Burn the “MSI WINDos x86 Disk Image” to a DVD (or a 4GB thumb drive - see below)
6. Boot computer using Ubuntu disk or Ubuntu thumb drive (press F11 on startup and choose
appropriate startup disk).
7. When Ubuntu starts, choose English, then choose “try Ubuntu without any change to your
computer”
8. After it boots, click on “System” on the top menu bar, then “Administration”, then “Partition
Editor”
9. Use the Partition Editor utility (GParted) to free up 15-32GB at end of hard drive.
10. Create a primary partition in the freed up area and format to FAT32 (or whatever). Be aware, I
believe FAT32 has a limitation of 32GB.
11. Shutdown
12. Now reboot with the MSI WINDos x86 Disk
13. When the main installer page appears, click on Utilities on the top menu bar and choose
Disk Utility
14. Highlight the new partition. Choose a name for the drive, such as Mac OS, and choose the
Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Then click on erase.
15. When the formatting is done, click on “Quit Disk Utility” from the menu.
16. It will take you back to the main installer “Welcome” page. Click on “Continue”.
17. Click to accept the licensing agreement.
18. Select your destination drive (one you just partitioned).
19. Very Important to STOP on the next screen titled “Install Summary”. In the lower left hand
corner there is a “Customize” button. Click it.
20. Go into Patches, then Kernel, and Uncheck it.
21. Click on done, and you will be taken back to the “Install Summary” page and click on
“Install”.
22. Sit back and go watch some television while the machine goes through the whole install
process.
23. Once it is finished and reboots, unplug the dvd usb cable.
24. Your Windows partition probably isn't currently active (first-boot) and the initial boot here
will return an error. Here are two solutions:
A. boot off your OS X Installation Disc in single user mode to use fdisk. The fdisk method can be
done by pressing F8 at the disc's Darwin Prompt and typing -s. You’ll have to wait a little before
the user prompt pops up.
At the user prompt, type these commands exactly:

fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0

This specifies the disc that you have XP installed to

The specified location rdisk0 may of course be different if XP was installed on a different drive,
e.g. rdisk1, rdisk2 (rdisk1 is the Windows drive on the MSI Wind)

flag 1

Marks XP as the active partition (assuming it was installed on the first partition of that particular
disk)

quit

This will quit fdisk and take you back to the normal single user prompt

Reboot

Your machine should restart and boot into Windows XP as normal. If it doesn’t boot or if it boots
to windows recovery (typically on rdisk0), try again (maybe even change drive choice). If it still
doesn’t work, go to the method described below.

B. boot off your Ubuntu Disc. After it boots, click on “System” on the top menu bar, then
“Administration”, then “Partition Editor”. This will open the Partition Editor utility (GParted).
Highlight the Windows partition and choose “Partition” from the top menu bar. In the dropdown
menu, choose “Manage Flags”. Check “boot”, close and shutdown Ubuntu.

(I Gave you 2 solutions here. The first time I loaded OS X, the first method worked without a
hitch. After reinstalling - due to a failed 10.5.6 update – the first method would only boot me to
the Windows recovery partition)

25. When you have finally booted into XP, copy chain0 (get the chain0.zip file here -
http://joyboner.com/wp-content/uploads2/2008/05/chain0.zip ) into the root of C:\
26. Open the Control Panel and click System (or right click “My Computer” from the desktop and
go to Properties), click on the “Advanced” tab, click the “Settings” button under “Startup and
Recovery”, and finally click “Edit”.
27. Edit your boot.ini to include this line of text at the bottom:

c:\chain0="Apple Mac OS X x86" (you can name it anything, just so you know it means boot OS
X)

28. When you next restart, you should be able to select Apple Mac OS X x86.
It will then either boot straight into your Mac install or show you the Darwin prompt – just
choose your Mac OS drive.
29. Mac OSX drivers are now available for the Realtek wireless module. You can find a link in
this post - mac/great-news-regarding-rtl8187se-wifi-module-t3986-160.html (around
December 9th or so). The Ralink wireless module and the driver can be found at
http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/STA_RT2860%20D-1.1.1.0%20UI-
1.6.8.0_2008_12_04.dmg (If you don’t know which one you have, It's an easy check ... look at
the sticker below the keyboard on the left. If it shows 802.11b/g/n, most likey the Ralink. You
can also check the driver in Win XP - if its tagged rt2860, you have the Ralink). If wireless
doesn't work, don’t forget to activate it with the Fn-F11 keys. If it still doesn't work, maybe
uninstall the wireless drivers and try the other drivers.
30. After wireless is up and running, update OS X (Quicktime, iTunes, etc.), but DO NOT update
to 10.5.6 (others here can help you with that). The Update to Quicktime should fix web cam
issues with Photo Booth (unless your camera in ver .3). If you want a Photo Booth version that is
native to 1024x600, download at
http://rapidshare.com/files/178704936/Photo_Booth_rev_2.zip . You’ll need a USB microphone
to use Skype.
31. Download Firefox, Skype, and whatever other favorite programs you want

Finally: If you don't have a DVD drive, here's a utility that will allow you to install from your
harddrive mac/how-install-osx-with-and-without-usb-stick-usb-dvd-t4701.html . I haven't
used it so I don't know anything about it. I imagine you could copy the ISO image to a 4GB
thumbdrive as well and install from there. I've installed both Ubuntu and OS X to thumb drives
and SD cards. You can format the thumb drives and SD cards in Ubuntu to FAT32 and they
should be bootable (at least they are for me).

It won't show up on Windows XP, but it should be available on OS X and it will show up on
Ubuntu. Did you install OS X on the drive or did it not show up as a choice to install to? You

Location: Maple Valley, WA I have redone item 14 and 15 to hopefully be a bit more clear (if that might have been the
Netbooks: MSI Wind U-100 problem). Point out anything that might be confusing and I'll adjust it in my description. I want to

make this easy for everyone.

I went to about 5-6 different sources and pieced this together. The installs worked smoothly for
me with few pitfalls and I thought it was a pretty straightforward approach.

At the top right of GParted you can choose a physical drive in a navigation bar and it will show
the drive's partitions. If you aren't seeing your hard drive, click the down arrow on the right of
the navigation bar. Mine defaulted to the hard drive, but that may not be the case for everyone.
If that doesn't work, I don't have anything else to offer. Maybe have to bite the bullet and
purchase partition magic. The Ubuntu method was the easiest/cheapest way I found to
repartition the drive without impacting the existing data.

Netbooks: MSI Wind afterwards? It is used with the following card:

I guess that once all is configured, it is better to quit it than to just "hide" it after each Mac
booting.

Thanks.
