Another Dual Boot Solution

I had real trouble getting other dual boot instructions to work for me, but this worked:

Install OSX (setting up two partitions in the process)
Joined: Mon Aug 04, 2008 6:35 Install XP
pm Boot (which will go into XP)
Posts: 21
Open up a Command window (Run:CMD)

Type LIST DISK

Type SELECT DISK n (where n is the number of the drive -- in this case 0)
Type LIST PARTITION
Type SELECT PARTITION n (where n is the number of the OSX partition)
Type ACTIVE
Type EXIT to exit DISKPART
Type EXIT again to exit the command prompt
Reboot

It will reboot into the Darwin bootloader, defaulting to OSX but allowing you to boot into XP.

Short answer: I don't think it matters, as the XP install will let you reformat as NTFS anyway.

Long answer: This is actually the simplified version of the many steps I went through. I actually
Joined: Mon Aug 04, 2008 installed Windows first, formatting the XP partition as NTFS and the other as FAT32. Then I
6:35 pm installed OSX (reformatting the second partition to Mac Journaled) and tried to use the the XP

disc to do the "fixmbr" method outlined in another thread, but with no luck. It was then that I
did a full reinstall of XP on the NTFS partition (which gave me Windows, but no OSX option). It
was then that I decided that perhaps the trouble was in the OSX partition not being marked
ACTIVE, so I googled how to do that and...voila.

For the record, I had previously tried the Chain0 method of dual booting, and while it gave me a
listing of Leopard at boot, selecting it didn't do anything. Much like how in the Darwin
Bootloader, after Installing XP and THEN OSX, I had the option to select XP, but it wouldn't
actually load.

As for Vista, I don't know. I have Home Premium on my desktop (and I actually like it quite a lot)
but after five days of screwing with this, now that I've got it working, I'm hesitant to try anything
new.

fair enough, i have home premium installed on my dekstop, and ultimate on my wind (odd but

tem to work properly, first time i tried i got some error about "blah+ not partitioned correctly

Can't get any of the ways to get it to work, tried this one twice as it was the simplest and easiest
to understand but couldnt get it to work, so im just gonna use paralells if ever i have to use

Usually it should work like this:

Wind Master
You installed OS X and AFTER you install XP: Either use DISKPART to activate the Darwin Boot

Netbooks: MSI Wind Loader comes up automatically.

That is of course the IDEAL setup, that not always works, since various OS X DvD install different
things and XP does sometimes strange things too.

So your mileage may vary, but describe your problems as precise as possible and we might be
able to help .

So my Wind, gig of RAM and Dell 1490 card will all will be arriving on Friday and I'll be spending
Saturday getting everything updated and OSX installed. I've never done anything like this before,

My Wind will come pre-loaded with XP and I don't want to delete that (I don't have another copy
of it that I can install later, as it sounds like many here have suggested we do). I have the
MSIWINDOWSosx86.iso ver. 10.5.4 and will be using that for the install. On the video that I
watched of the install, he totally reformatted his drive, and deleted everything that was on it.
How do I NOT do this? Can I just go into XP before the install and create a partition and install
OSX on that? If not, what do I do?

Also, does the file that I have include a bootloader so when I boot up my machine I'll be given
the option of what to boot into? Or do I have to go find a bootloader elsewhere? What is this
Darwin loader that I keep reading about? Is that something that I need to find and download and
install? (none of the videos I watched mentioned anything about dual booting) I don't care so
much about which is the default or any of that, I'm mostly just concerned that I'll have the
option.

Any and all help you can give me will be very appreciated. Thanks!

Location: Bucharest, Romania so if we talk about the Darwin Boot Loader, that is the console boot loader from unix that
Netbooks: MSI Wind actually starts the operating system whichever that is. The Darwin Boot Loader can actually start
many operating systems and looks a little bit like the Windows XP Loader.

Anyway, all this will be installed when installing OS X. In order NOT to delete your windows xp
partition (and the rescue partition), you will have to RESIZE the Windows XP partition in order to
make room for the OS X Partition. The only USABLE way to do this is with GParted (a linux tool
somewhat like Partition Magic, Partition Magic itself WILL NOT WORK, so dont bother)

You can get a live-cd which boots right into GParted here :
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php. You WILL need an external USB DVD Drive for this,
otherwise its not possible. (There are reports of people having done this with an USB stick, good
luck with this then). But since you need the external DVD drive anyway for installing OS X...

If you put the Dell 1490 in BEFORE installing OS X, you have wireless right away, since OS X
natively supports this card.

I wil be receiving my Wind tomorrow and have another question re: dual booting and not erasing
the existing XP install. I have purchased a 120GB HD to replace the stock 80GB drive. If I clone

the original disk and install on the new one, can I leave the original XP install as is and simply
create a new partition on the drive for OS X?

Also, is it possible to install MSIWindosx86 from an external USB non-flash drive?

If you clone 1:1, you should be fine having 40GB left for OS X install.

By "non-flash" drive, I meant an external hard drive as opposed to a memory stick. Sorry for the

I tried this and it failed to boot... so will need to go find a recovery disk

OSX works fine, was booting from CD. XP worked find.

Now I have a foobarred boot partition

It depends on which type of partition u choosed.MBR or GUID with osx?

But , for a fast recovery u can download chameleon bootloader (less than 1 MB ..) , connect your
wind to and external usb hdd and launch the chamelon for installing it on yours partition
drive.keep in mind , chameleon can boot vista not xp.

for using windows as bootloader it's a different situation.

talk to handle....

Dont get me wrong they are all relevant but the OSX86 Wind thread is plagued with repeat
threads on similar topics..I know there is X,Y,Z differences to dual boots and that they have
issues but to be frank I wish they had their own subsection.
