STRESS TESTING - CARIBBEAN ASSOCIATION OF BANKS

The global banking and financial crisis has heightened the need to test the resilience of banks and the financial system as a whole under unfavourable economic scenarios. Both bankers and regulators have a responsibility to ensure that plans and systems are in place to manage and mitigate risks. It is also imperative that financial institutions maintain adequate capital to withstand any adverse economic effects. One key risk management tool that has regained prominence among financial industry regulators and central banks is stress testing; a methodology that evaluates whether the capital held by banks is adequate to meet their obligations to customers and other creditors and continue their operations in the event of a crisis. Crown Agents, in association with the Caribbean Association of Banks, a community of banks in the Caribbean/CARICOM Region, delivered a Stress Testing training programme for the associations members to enable them to plan stress testing programmes to meet the needs of risk governance. This is a highly specialised area where Crown Agents expertise helped make contribution towards safeguarding the Caribbean region financial system. At the end of the course, participants gained the necessary skills to choose relevant stress testing methodologies and design appropriate scenarios.
