Introduction

Tribal Portraits is a celebration of African culture and its peoples captured by western and African photographers. Most of the photographs in the exhibition are very rare: some have not been on the open market for decades, while others are possibly unique. This is also, as far as we are aware, the first selling show devoted to the history of photography in Africa by western and African photographers covering the last one-hundred and fifty years. Examples of iconic images by renowned

photographers include

Irving Penns Dahomey

Girls (Item 103), George Rodgers Dinkas (Item 15), Leni Riefenstahls Nuba series (Item 18) and Casimir Zagourskis Congo (Item 5). These vintage photographic portraits are juxtaposed with contemporary African photographers Malick Sidib and Seydou Keita. In addition to these famous names are the works of Hugo Bernatzik and Pierre Verger both of whom took some of the most important and beautiful photographs of Africa during the midtwentieth century. Exhibiting vintage and contemporary prints by western and African photographers is an ambitious concept. Tribal Portraits is about showing this body of photographic portraiture as art. Photographs taken in 1856 by Felix Moulin and others from the early nineteenth century were intended as historical and documentary images. They have survived decades and shown in this new and exciting context, next to twentieth century and contemporary imagery from the African Continent, they survive as works of art.

5. ZAGOURSKI, Casimir. LAfrique qui Disparait. [c.1930]. Twenty-two silver gelatin prints, postcard size. Very good tonal range and in good condition. This collection consists of postcards made from photographs taken by Casimir Zagourski in Africa between 1924 and 1941, which formed a part of his overal project, LAfrique Qui Disparait (Disappearing Africa). The photos are set in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly known as the Belgian Congo), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Chad, Kenya, Central African Republic, Cameroon, and Congo-Brazzaville. The postcards depict a variety of aspects of everyday life in these different settings. Casimir Zagourski, of Polish parentage, was born in the Ukraine in 1880. After a military career in the Russian air force and the Polish army, he left Eastern Europe and moved to Africa in 1924, settling in Leopoldville, now Kinshasa, Congo, where he began his career as a photographer. During the next seventeen years, until his death in 1941, Zagourski traveled around Central Africa photographing its people, places, and local traditions. At the same time, he established and maintained a store in Leopoldville to sell these images as postcards and large prints. He also exhibited his work at the Paris Worlds Fair in 1937.

(5.5 by 7.5 inches). At the funeral of a king or other royalty, the boat was filled with flowers and gifts to their ancestors and floated out to sea. Such boats were banned by the Portuguese to stop the local people from escaping. Hugo Adolf Bernatzik (1897 1953) was well known as an ethnographer and photographer. During his travels he became fascinated with the people he encountered. This fascination materialized into

powerful and compelling photographic images which both document the environment of these people and capture the beauty of a traditional Africa. Throughout his life Bernatzik also undertook research in a variety of African countries, such as Guinea-Bissau, at the time known as Portuguese Guinea, and countries beyond Africa, including Southeast Asia. His photographs convey his extraordinary talent for capturing the traditions and customs of the Africans. He caught a tropical disease on his last trip to Morocco and died in1953 at the age of fifty-six. During the Second World War most of his work and equipment was destroyed in a fire in Austria and only one almost complete set has survived.

102. KEITA, Seydou. Untitled (Young Couple). [c.1956, printed 1998]. Gelatin silver print. Very good condition, signed and dated in ink in the margin. Dimensions: 520 by 375mm. (20.5 by 15 inches). When Keita was first shown in New York at the Gagosian Gallery in 1997 the show created quite a stir. Margarett Loke, writing in The New York Times, described Seydou Keta as the man who brought renewed vitality to the art of photographic portraiture. The photos on the wall of the Gagosian were very large later prints (48 by 60 inches) from the negatives taken in Africa during the 1950s. Since he was introduced to the contemporary photography market his name has become synonymous with modern African photography, making its way into collections all over the world. His portraits are captivating and very

modern. Before the Gagosian show he was shown in Paris at the Cartier Foundation and the Scalo Gallery in Zurich in 1997 both of which showed images reproduced to 20 by 24 inches (original size being 5 by 7 inches). In 1948 he set up a commercial studio in downtown Bamako. He was poor, so he made prints using a 5-by-7inch view camera, by placing the negative directly against the photographic paper, used his bed sheet as a backdrop, and photographed outdoors using available light. Despite these basic technical obstacles, he revealed his subjects as they had not been seen before: wearing Western suits and bow ties, sitting on motorbikes or holding radios. Furthermore, it was a mixture of Western dress and African poses, African dress and Western poses which gave these portraits such an edge of originality.

103. PENN, Irving. Five Dahomey Girls, One Standing. [1967]. Printed before 1974. Gelatin silver print, signed, initialled, dated, numbered 4413 in ink, Penn/Conde Nast copyright credit reproduction limitation stamps on reverse of mount, silver prints of this negative not exceeding 23 on verso. Dimensions: paper size 350 by 350mm. (13 x 13 inches.). These particular girls belong to the Tofino and Aizo tribes of the Dahomey. Their ancestors, the Fon women, the Amazons of the Kingdom of Dahomey, carried arms and were the Kings guard. The way they wrap their turbans gives a clue to their status whether brides or girls in search of a husband.

Dahomey was the name of a country in west Africa now called the Republic of Benin. The Kingdom of Dahomey was a powerful west African state founded in the seventeenth century which survived until 1894. From 1894 until 1960 Dahomey was a part of French West Africa. The independent Republic of Dahomey existed from 1960-1975. In 1975, the country was re-named Benin after the Bight of Benin (not the unrelated historical Kingdom of Benin) since Benin, unlike Dahomey, was deemed politically neutral for all ethnic groups in the state.

Malick Sidibs photographs are comprised mainly of studio portraits and photo coverage of life in Mali. His work on the streets of Bamako signals an important moment in the evolution of photography in West Africa in the 1960s and 70s. Moving away from the ingrained, Western image of a devastated Africa, Sidib aimed to capture the verve and frenzy of Malian culture. His studio photography is quirky, yet glamorous using unusual backdrops and patterned fabrics which are emblematic of his studio compositions.

(16 by 11.5 inches). This photograph is one of a series of editioned portraits studies by Antoine Schneck. They have been printed in this smaller size of 400 by 300mm. and the larger 1060 by 800mm. While taking the picture, the model does not see the photographer or the camera and he or she is isolated from all environmental elements that could evoke an atmosphere. With both photographer and subject housed under a translucent tent, the model is sheathed in a black cowl with a simple black sheet for a background. The camera lens peeks through a hole in the sheet and light from the flashes is uniformly distributed on the model. In this way, only the face of the model is highlighted.

Twenty-seven albumen prints, all with very good tonal range and in good condition, eleven of the prints have been slightly cropped into the original photo, printed titles. Dimensions: 145 by 200mm. This group of photographs show interesting portraits of Chief Kama III with his wife

and surrounding area.To counter threats from neighboring Africans and from the Boers (Afrikaners) of S Africa, chief Khama and other chiefs arranged (1885) for Great Britain to make Bechuanaland a protectorate. Despite the opposition of many British imperialists wishing to undermine the chiefs authority, this status was confirmed when Khama III made a journey to England in 1895. Khama IIIs firm leadership eliminated much of the internal dissension that had divided his people. Other views show the fort of Matlaputla, and fort Victoria.

155. [Photographer unknown]. Somalia. [c.1930]. Oblong 4to. (370 by 220mm). One-hundred and twentyseven postcards, 85 by 140mm. Green silk cloth, striking metal art nouveau pattern. An interesting collection of photographs from an Italian missionary working in Somalia. Fascist Italy, under Benito Mussolini attacked Abyssinia (now Ethiopia), with an aim to colonize it, in 1935. Following the war the United Nations gave Somalia as a protectorate to Italy in 1949. The Ogaden province of Somalia was given to the re-established Ethiopian government by the British Empire, which kept British Somaliland under its protection/ rule. The French also kept Djibouti under colonial administration, until eventual independence in 1977. Italian Somaliland gained its independence from Italy on 1 July 1960.
