MATHEMATICS 6

Name: _____________ Gr. 6- _______________

Directions: Print and answer the following worksheet and submit it to your Math
Teacher on July 6.

I. Topic: ALGEBRA- Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Objective: Evaluate algebraic expressions through substitution

1. John is now x years old. Write an expression in terms of x for each of the following
and fine the value when x=18.

Ex. The age of his grandmother, who is 50 years older.

x + 50

18 + 50= 68

The grandmother is 68 years old.

a. The age of his brother, who is 5 years older.

b. The age of his sister, who is 3 years older.

c. The age of his aunt, who is twice as old.

d. The age of his cousin, who is half his age.

2. There are n pieces of chocolate in a box. Write an expression in terms of n for each of
the following and find the value when n=24.

a. The number of pieces of chocolate left after 6 pieces have been eaten.

b. The number of pieces of chocolate each child gets when the box of chocolate is
shared equally among four children.

c. The total number of pieces of chocolate in ten similar boxes.

3. Find the value of the expressions when x=10

Ex. + 12 = + 12 = + 12 = 12 + 12 = 24

a.

b.

c.

4. Give the expression for each of the following then evaluate the expression if b=4
Ex. Multiply 5 by b

5 . b = 5 . 4 = 20

a. Add b to 9 b. Subtract 4 from b

c. Subtract b from 10 d. Multiply b by 3

e. Multiply 7 by b f. Divide b by 5

g. Half of b h. Add 10 to b

i. Subtract b from 11 j. Multiply b by 6

II. Topic: ALGEBRA- Introduction to Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Objective: Simplify algebraic expressions in one variable

1. A rod of length a cm is joined to another rod also a cm long. What is the total length
of the two rods?

a cm a cm

Total length of the two rods= (a + a) cm

(a + a) is also (2 x a)

We can simplify (a + a) by writing:

a + a = 2a

2. The figure below is made up of 3 rods, each b cm long. Find the total length of the 3
rods.

b cm b cm b cm

Total length= b + b + b

= (3 x b) cm

We can simplify (b + b + b) by writing:

b + b + b= 3b

3. Simplify these expressions.

1. x + x 2. y + y + y

3. a + a + a + a + a 4. b + b + b + b + b + b

5. c + c + c + c + c + c + c 6. a + 3a

7. 2z + 5z 8. 4x + x

9. 3y + 6y 10. b + 2b + 3b

11. 4c + 2c + 5c 12. x – x

13. 2y – 2y 14. 2a + 3a

III. MCOW # 1 to be submitted on July 6. Write your answers and/or solutions on a pad paper.

MCOW # 1 : A ruler costs m cents and a pen costs 70 cents more than a ruler.

A. What is the cost of one pen and two rulers in cents? Express your answer in terms of m in
its simplest form.

B. Tico wants to buy 1 pen and 2 rulers but is short of 15 cents. If the ruler costs 80 cents,
how much money does Tico have?
