MAD DASH ... Wauseons Ty Suntken sprints toward the goal line during third quarter action Friday night against Swanton. By Bill Bray THE VILLAGE REPORTER Wauseon's high power offense showed up for the third week in a row to pull away from the Swanton Bulldogs in the Tribe's first NWOAL game of the season 62-19. Their third win of the season has already matched the win column for the 2012 season. Swanton, showing some improvements in their offensive abilities, were able to take the opening kickoff and march 67 yards in 10 plays to take the early 7-0 lead with 7:11 showing on the clock. It took Wauseon just six plays to go the 62 needed yards on their first drive to tie the game at 7-7. A 23-yard reverse to Kris Boysel was the back-breaker as the senior speedster ran away from the Swanton defense for paydirt with 4:46 remaining in the opening quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Swanton's Antonio Cervantes fumbled and the Indians recovered with great field position at the Swanton 45 yard line. Again, the offense, who has been firing on all cylinders the last three games, covered the distance in six plays with the final seven yards being erased by Ty Sunken as the senior signal caller crossed the goal line with 1:23 remaining to put the Indians up for good at 14-7. After a three and out for Swanton by an stingy Indians defense, the 'O' ready to strike again. Suntken, on the second play from scrimmage, found Noah Castle right down the middle of the field for a 34 yard touchdown strike with 11:10 left in the second quarter. Josh Whitcomb's kick gave the Indians a 21-7 advantage. But again the offense of Swanton was able to move the ball behind the running of Jordan Nyler and the passing of Bryce McComb. After Matt Rainey carried for three yards to the Indians 20, the drive stalled with two incomplete passes and Taylor Prentice booted a 37 yard field goal with 9:34 left to make the score 21-10. Swanton kicked off as the ball landed in the hands of Boysel, he was off to the races, he broke free and sprinted 84 yards down the eastern sideline and suddenly the Tribe were back up 28-10. An Axel Bueter touchdown and a Swanton field goal finished the first half scoring and the Indians held a 35-13 advantage at the break. It took the Indians offense three plays on their first possession of the third quarter to put six more point on the board.
By: Kent Hutchison THE VILLAGE REPORTER HICKSVILLE- Friday the 13th, a date considered to be bad luck by many ended up that way for the Edon Blue Bombers in their contest with the host Hicksville Aces. Early in the game it appeared the day was going to be one of good fortune for the Bombers. Edon found paydirt their first two possession and built a 13-0 lead with 5:34 remaining in the first quarter. However, from that point on Hicksville scored 26 unanswered points and found the end zone in 8 of their next 10 possessions en route to a 53-33 win over the Bombers. Edon received the opening kickoff and in nine plays and 2:50 covered the 62 yards needed for a touchdown. The Bombers used a combination of running and passing plays to move the ball. It appeared the opportunity was slipping away from Edon when Kaden Sapps pass attempt to Landon Bloir was just out of reach. However, a personal foul on the Aces gave the Bombers a first down at the Hicksville 16 yard line. Sapp hit Conner Hug for an 11 yard gain. The drive was capped off by a 5 yard scamper through the heart of the Aces defense by Sapp. Mike Peeples added the point after touchdown putting Edon on top 7-0. Hicksville appeared poised to counter the Bomber score with one of their own as they picked up a quick first down. However, that premise changed quickly when a pitch fell to the turf and was pounced upon by Tyler Seaman. The Bombers went back to work just short of midfield. Sapp targeted Hug again on first down, but the pass missed the target. Trevor Green picked up 8 yards on the ground, then Sapp called his own number to pick up the first down. Two successive running plays resulted in a loss and then a holding penalty. Faced with second and 33, Sapp found Hug again for an 11 yard gain. He then tossed the pigskin up for in grabs. Brock Thiel showed off his vertical climbing up over a Hicksville defender for a 32 yard pick up. The Bombers covered the final 20 yards for another score when Sapp hit Bloir. Peeples kick was unsuccessful, however Edon now held a 13-0 advantage with over five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. On the next two possessions the two teams exchanged punts. From that point on the Aces played their trump
Suntken found Boysel, who covered much of the distance on foot, with a 55-yard touchdown pass with just 54 ticks of the clock gone. Whitcomb's extra point attempt missed and the Indians grew their lead to 41-13. Swanton responded with a 13 play, 70 yard drive for their 19th point with a 16yard pass from McComb to Robbie Gilsdorf. The Bulldogs tried a two-point conversion but Nyler was stopped short of the endzone. With Wauseon taking possession at it's own 35-yard line. Axel Bueter ran through a huge whole behind his offensive line and raced 65 yards untouched to paydirt. Whitcomb split the uprights and the lead was 48-19 with 4:45 left. After running and passing for 75 yards on their next trip down the field, the Bulldogs drive stalled on a fourth and goal at the Wauseon four yard line. Defenders including Alec Vonier, Aaron Schuette, and Danny Hench helped thwart the drive. The ball went back to the potent Wauseon offense and they did not disappoint. Behind tremendous line blocking from Noah Castle, Ceasar Juarez, Josh Kauffman, Anthony Werder, Alec Vonier and Caleb Andrews the Indians collected the 96 needed yards on just five snaps to reach the Swanton endzone again. This time it was Ty Suntken running for 66 of the yards on two carries as the second run, a 23 yarder, gave the Indians a score with 10:05 remaining in the final quarter. The Indians final touchdown of the night came when the starters were replaced by second teamers who took over where their team mates left off covered 63 yards in eight plays with Jeremiah Kauffman scoring his first varsity touchdown on a 10 yard run. Unofficially, the Bulldogs ran 78 offensive plays to the Indians 37. Wauseon had 436 total yards. They accumulated 323 yards on the ground and 116 through the air. Suntken, unofficially had 127 yards on just six carries. Bueter was also over the century mark with 107 yards on nine carries. Suntken was six of seven passing and Boysel caught two passes for 55 yards while Castle caught two for 43 yards. The Indians are back in action Friday when they host the Delta Panthers in an NWOAL neighborhood rivalry. Game time in set for 7 p.m. Bill Bray may be reached at publisher@thevillagereporter.com
cards on the Bombers. Hicksville moved the ball 35 yards in nine plays, eight of them rushing attempts, to cut the deficit to 13-6. Following a 26 yard return by Hug, Edon was back to work at their 42 yard line. Green and Sapp gained one yard each on the ground, then Sapp hit Hug again for 13 yards. Sapp took to the ground for 15, then 6 yards. The junior signal caller then hit Green for four more yards and another first down at the Hicksville 20 yard line. Green pounded the line for three additional yards, but Sapp was sacked for a 2 yard loss. Hug was targeted again by Sapp for a gain of eight. Facing fourth and two from the Aces 12 yard line, the Bombers tried to hurry to the line to catch Hicksville off guard. That strategy failed miserably when the exchange from center fell to the ground ending the threat and turning the ball back over to the Aces on downs. Each team punted the ball again, then Hicksville took back over at their 41. The Aces used several aerials to move the ball. When Sapp intercepted a pass just short of the goal line it appeared the threat had be thwarted. However, a yellow hankie indicated holding against the Bombers. Shortly thereafter the Aces completed a pass for a touchdown and the score was knotted 13-13 at halftime. It was evident that the score at the end of the half caused a huge momentum swing. The Aces needed just two runs by Kaleb Johns to cover 73 yards and put Hicksville up 20-13. On the ensuing possession by the Bombers, a Sapp aerial was intercepted by the Aces Jonny Geisige. Hicksville scored six plays later for their 26th unanswered points of the night to go up 26-13 with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter. Following a squib kick, Edon started with the ball resting on their 42 yard line. Sapp gained six yards on the ground only to have the play negated by a holding call. The quarterback then completed two successive passes; first to Hug for 10 yards, then to Bloir for 19 more. Sapp ran for one yard before missing Hug on a pass attempt. The junior didnt miss his next toss hitting Peeples for a 34 yard score to narrow the margin to 26-19 as the kick by Peeples was blocked. Hicksville scored on their next two possessions to up the advantage to 40-19 as the fourth quarter began. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Hilltop Cadets Offensive & Defensive Salvos Shred The Holgate Tigers
on the ball while a sea of running red was in hot pursuit. Hilltop recovered the ball at the Holgate 42. The Cadet drive died at the 36, where Holgate again took over. Towers busted up a pass play on first down. Blaisdell and Brooker broke free on second down, forcing a scramble that Dave Smith ended in a five-yard loss. On third down, the quarterback was again trapped behind the line, where he fumbled the ball away and Hilltop took over at the 27. Abner went over right guard for nine, and Quinn Smith carried to the 13. The drive died there, and Ashenfelters field goal attempt from the left hash mark was wide right. The Tigers dodged a bullet, but would soon shoot themselves in the foot. Taking over at their 20, the Tigers picked up a pair of first downs to move the ball to their 42. Once there though, a pass over the middle was picked off by Champion, who returned the ball to the Holgate 31. A pitch right to Abner netted nothing on first down, and Batt was driven back on second down for a loss of a yard. On third and 11 a pass to the right fell incomplete. Facing a fourth and 11 from the 32, the Cadets called for a time out to discuss strategy. That time out was time well spent as Hilltop opted to go for broke on the fourth down play. Quinn Smith dropped straight back and hit Champion with a short pass to the left. With blockers sealing off the line, Champion turned the corner and hit the gas down the left sideline for a 32-yard touchdown with 1:53 left in the half. Ashenfelters PAT boot was good, and the half ended with the Cadets still pitching a shutout at 10-0. The second half would see the game go from close to blowout status. Hilltop Head Coach Paul Kyser said prior to the start of the third period, Hopefully we can get some kind of running game established... that would help a lot. Weve had a couple high moments and a couple good plays, but overall we are not moving the ball very well offensively. That running game would make an appearance, and Holgate struggled to stop it when they needed to. The Tigers went four and out to start the half, and the Cadets began to drive the ball downfield. A third and 15 pass from the 20 bounced off the hands of Brooker and right into the awaiting arms of a Holgate defender at the Tigers seven. The Hilltop drive was short-circuited, but only temporarily. On first down, the quarterback dropped back to pass, but had Champion all over him before he could scramble. Champion buried him in the endzone for a safety that gave Hilltop a 12-0 lead with 8:50 left in the third. The Tigers tried a squib on the free kick, but Hilltop recovered on the Holgate 44 with 8:41 left in the period. On the first play, Quinn Smith turned and handed the ball to Abner. Going behind Towers at center, Abner hit the line, carried a pair of Tigers, and then shook both off on a 44-yard run to the endzone. The Ashenfelter kick made it 18-0, and the animation in the Cadet ranks was both visible and audible. Both teams then went three and out, but thanks to a pass interference call, Holgate was able to get out of the shadows of their own goal posts on their ensuing possession. The Tigers picked up another first down, but the drive ended when Champion blew up an inside handoff, forcing and then recovering a fumble. Quinn Smith hit Champion for a five yard gain to start the drive, then Abner moved the chains with a run to the 24. On the next play, it was the big diesel again as Abner took the handoff and ran it up the middle for a 24-yard score with 1:20 left in the third. The PAT kick was blocked, but the Cadets took a 25-0 lead into the fourth. The Cadets were already moving the ball at the start of the fourth period when Champion took the handoff and busted off a 40-yard touchdown run. The Ashenfelter kick made it a 32-0 game. Holgate was able to get a pair of scores later against the Cadet second stringers, but only enough to blunt the blowout. Quinn Smith was 6 of 21 through the air for 75 yards, a score and a pick, and ran the ball 10 times for 13 yards. Abner ran the ball 11 times for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns. Champion ran 4 times for 37 yards and a score, catching a pair for 37 yards and another score. Westfall ran once for 2 yards, and Batt had a yard on 3 tries. Burlew hauled in 2 passes for 30 yards, and Zack VanDyke grabbed a pass for 22 yards. The defense played undoubtedly their finest game of the year, and the numbers bore out the fact. Champion had a pick, a fumble recovery, 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss, including the third period safety. The sack and tackles for loss numbers were strong across the board, with David Smith going 2 and 3, Blaisdell 2 and 2, and Brooker going half and half. That defense will be sorely tested on September 20, when TAAC football begins with the arrival of the always dangerous Toledo Christian at Daft Field. WAS THIS TRIP REALLY NECESSARY? ... The Holgate quarterback is greeted by Hilltop defenders Chad Champion, Logan Brooker, Joe Shilling and Jalen Towers. By: Timothy Kays THE VILLAGE REPORTER HOLGATE - Week one, it was a lack of offense. Week two, the offense was coming to life, but the defense was going on life support. Week three on September 13 saw the Hilltop Cadets searching for win #1 on the season, and with it the ability to bring defensive and offensive pressure to bear in the same game. Unfortunately for the Holgate Tigers, the Cadets found the combination, rattling off 32 unanswered points en route to a 32-12 win that was a bigger blowout than the 20-point margin indicated. In the early going however, it looked like the Tigers were going to have a field day. On their first possession, Holgate began moving the ball downfield. Facing a fourth and six, the Tiger quarterback dropped back to pass and was immediately pressured. Switching to Plan-B, he scrambled to his left only to find Cayden Blaisdell and Chad Champion closing rapidly. Turning to Plan-C, he slammed on the brakes and scrambled to his right with Blaisdell and Champion in pursuit. In desperation, he heaved the ball down the right sidelines and found a receiver that was shadowing his scramble. Having left his defender in the dust, the pass was completed for a big gain inside the Hilltop 25. On the next play the tight end was left uncovered for another huge gain down to the three. It was there that the Cadet defense regained consciousness. A first down run gained nothing. A second down pass to the right of the endzone was caught, but hauled in out of bounds. The third down play saw Jalen Towers busting through the line to force an errant pass, and a quarterback draw on fourth down was stuffed at the line of scrimmage...the Cadet defense held. They did not have much time to celebrate the achievement, though. Taking over at their own three, the first down play by Austin Batt brought the ball out to the five. Quarterback Quinn Smith then tried the right side, only to be buried by six Tigers for little gain. On third and six, Smith handed the ball off to Miklo Abner, and the Tigers were waiting, In the midst of the scrum, the ball came loose and Holgate recovered at the five. The recently tested Cadet defense would have to prove that their first stand was no fluke. On first down, the Tigers went for a pass to the left of the endzone. The ball was caught, but like the previous drive, the receiver was out of bounds. A second down pass play was blown up when Joe Shilling came on a blitz and forced a scramble. This time there was no Plan-B as Champion joined Shilling in burying the quarterback for a sack and a loss of ten. Third down saw the Tigers misfire on a pass over the middle, and a fourth and goal short pass was blown up by Blaisdell at the twelve...the defense held, again. Two trips inside the Hilltop ten, and Holgate had bupkes. The Cadet Cadre however had the ball, as well as something that they had gone without up to this point in the season...confidence. That confidence grew over the next three quarters to a point that it was so real, it should have been charged admission. On first down, Smith found Mikel Burlew on the left side for a gain of 19. The same combination connected on the following play, taking the ball out to the Hilltop 43. The drive died there though, and Hilltop punted the ball away. Holgate was unable to connect on first down, and a contingent of Blaisdell, Dave Smith and others to the quarterback for a six-yard sack on second down. On third down, Dave Smith came on a corner blitz, and with Logan Brooker and Jesse Westfall closing in for support, tacked on another big loss via the sack. Facing a fourth and forever on their own 29, Holgate elected to punt the ball, but a horrendous snap resulted in a loose ball that the Tigers were able to recover at their two. The Cadets took over with a first and goal as the first period came to a close. The successes of the defense had yet to translate to the offense for Hilltop, and prior to the snap, their first and goal from the two became a first and goal from the seven following a false start call. A first down pass to Batt in the endzone was well defended, and both Batt and Quinn Smith remained on the turf following the play. With key contributors like Will McKinney, Luke Wagner and Justin Grapengeter already in civvies on the sideline, injuries to key players like Batt and Smith would be devastating. Both were helped off the field, and Burlew was under center when a second down end around handoff to Champion was blown up in the backfield for a loss back to the 14. Smith came back on for the third and goal pass play that was broken up just outside the goal line. Facing fourth down, the call was made from the sideline, Field goal. On came the field goal unit, along with Justin Ashenfelter who was seeing his first action of the year after suffering a broken neck during the preseason. When his kick went through the uprights at the 10:58 mark, the Cadets had two things...the first points of the night, and their first lead of the 2013 season, 3-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Abner punched a squibber to the right side. The Tigers appeared stunned, and barely made a play
ENDZONE BOUND ... Chad Champion of Hilltop clears the right corner and heads for six points.
Edon continued to battle. Beginning at their 43 yard line, Sapp kept the ball for 16 yards on the ground, then tossed one up down the north sideline that Hug snatched from two Hicksville defenders for a 35 yard gain. With the ball resting at the Hicksville six, Sapp found Bloir for their second scoring connection. After Peeples nailed the kick Edon trailed 40-26. Another onside kick attempt by the Bomber resulted in excellent field possession for the Aces. Starting at the Edon 49 yard line, Hicksville needed just three plays and 1:30 to score once again. This time Geisige hit Zack Yoder for a 48 yard score making the score 47-26 in favor of the home team. There was still plenty of fight left in the Bomber offense. Starting at their 43 yard line, Sapp tossed a screen in the left flat and Green darted 22 yards. Sapp hit his favorite target Hug for a 13 yard gain leaving Edon with a first and 10 at the Aces 22 yard line. A short completion to Peeples resulted in no gain, and then the next attempt in Hugs direction was tipped and almost intercepted. Facing 3rd and 10, Sapp called his own number for just enough for a first down. The duo of Sapp to Hug gained the final 12 yards to trim the lead down to 47-33 with 7:46

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER? ... A huge hole in the line leaves Keegan Hitzeman of Montpelier staring down a sea of unchecked Patriot defenders.
By: Storm Humbert THE VILLAGE REPORTER The Montpelier Locomotives took the field on September 13 looking to bounce back on their home turf after a devastating loss the week prior at Liberty Center. Their opponents, the Patrick Henry Patriots, were no pushovers however and the night didnt go quite as planned for the home team Locos. The night didnt start out great for the home team as the Locomotives first offensive possession ended with an interception and Patrick Henry taking over on their side of the field. However, in what wound up being one of the few Patriot mistakes of the night, the visitors gave the ball right back to the Locos with a fumble on their first play from scrimmage. After this quick back and fort of possessions however, it quickly shaped up to be a long night for the home team Locomotives. After regaining possession, Montpelier went for a quick three and out culminating in a punt. The visiting Patriots then took over and moved quickly down the field for the first score of the evening. It got worse fast for the Locos. They went another three and out on their next possession and this was quickly capitalized upon by Patrick Henry as the Patriots scored on their first play from scrimmage on the ensuing possession. The next Montpelier possession was a three and out of a different variety in that the first two plays went for little or no gain and the third was picked off by the Patriots around midfield. Two plays later, the visiting team was in the end zone again. The Locos next possession was much the same except that this time the interception occurred on the first play from scrimmage and was accompanied by a charge of offensive pass interference. The Patriots quickly took the ball down for another score to make it 28-0 before the end of the first quarter. Montpeliers next possession got a little traction and the Locos moved the chains once, but the drive ended in another punt. The next Patrick Henry possession ended up moving more slowly than the previous ones, but just as effectively as the Patriots posted yet another score.
The next Montpelier drive was another three and out and ended in yet another punt attempt. This one was just an attempt because the snap sailed over the punters head and he was swarmed by Patriots resulting in a large loss of yardage and a turnover on downs. At this point, however, the Montpelier defense rallied and made some big plays. They stuffed a couple of Patrick Henry runs and knocked down some passes. Then, the Patriots lost five yards on a false start call which brought up fourth down and six. The Locos made an impressive stand and didnt give up the first. This turnover on downs gave the ball back to the Locomotives with one last drive attempt before the half. And what an attempt it was. On the second play of the drive, Alex Zuver hauled in a long pass from Keegan Hitzeman and ran with it until being stopped by a Patrick Henry defensive back close to the Patriots red zone. In total, the play netted the home team 70 yards. The drive, however, was not to be as the Locomotives quickly found themselves facing a long fourth down after a few incomplete passes. The drive ended in a turnover on downs and the Patriots ran out the first half clock and went to the locker room with the score 35-0. The second half was much of the same for the Locomotives, though quarterback Keegan Hitzeman did find the end zone on a nine yard run in the third quarter. The game ended with the score 49-7 and the Locos looking again to next week and next season for retribution. On the night, quarterback Keegan Hitzeman was two of eight in the passing game for a total of 90 yards with three interceptions. Also, the Montpelier stable of running backs managed 46 rushing yards on 42 attempts with on touchdown coming from Hitzeman. The two receptions on the night went to Alex Zuver for 70 yards and Cody Caudill for 20. In terms of defense, Alex Zuver grabbed the highlight of the night on that side of the ball as well with Montpeliers only interception. The Locomotives will now focus their attention on the upcoming game against Swanton so head over next week and watch Montpelier face off against the Bulldogs, it promises to be a good game. By: Storm Humbert THE VILLAGE REPORTER With school starting up, summer baseball has all but drawn to a close. However, there are some who refuse to stop playing and there are plenty of organizations happy to help them keep playing provided they make the team, of course. One of these die-hards is Nic Schieber, a sophomore at West Unity. Nic has played baseball since he was four years old according to his mother. It is his favorite sport, and he loves to both watch and play. His favorite team is the Detroit Tigers and his favorite players are Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, and C.C. Sabathia. While Nic is currently getting his reps in with the Napoleon River Bandits in his Fall league, he has recently accepted a position in a far more exclusive program Coast to Coast Athletics. In order to make this team, Nic attended two tryouts, one in Bowling Green, and one in St. Louis. These tryouts were held in 35 states and the program usually sees between 1,700 and 2,000 participants. Of all of these players, only 15 make the team, thats less than one percent, and, this year, Nic found himself in
that one percent. This is especially impressive because Nic is one of the youngest in his age group (15-18), and he made it as a pitcher. Making the team presents Nic with two incredible opportunities. First, on December 27 through January 1, Nic will get to travel to Jupiter, Florida to attend camps and workshops as well as play a couple games. Then, next June, he will get to travel with the Coast to Coast team to play against some foreign competition in Puerto Rico. The best part is, aside from the travel opportunities, that the camps and the Puerto Rico games will be full of college and professional scouts which will allow Nic to drastically increase his visibility and chances of playing at the next level. Nic has definitely given some thought to playing at the college level. The schools he would love to go to are South Carolina, Michigan, and Notre Dame. You may be wondering, why these schools? Well, Nic has his reasons. He has family in South Carolina, so that would be comfortable for him (and who wouldnt love to spend a couple years in either of the Carolinas). He and his father have always been big Notre Dame fans, and Michigan made the list because he doesnt really like Ohio State, fair enough. As you can see, Nic has some big dreams when it comes to baseball and talent to go with them. He does, however, need some help to make his Puerto Rico dreams a reality. The trips to Florida and Puerto Rico will run about $6,700 total. Luckily, the Coast to Coast organization knows that many of its players will need to raise funds to afford these trips
and theyve set up a site to collect support dollars. If you would like to give Nic some support, just go to www.reachingourgoal.org, click on make a donation, and type in Nics last name (Schieber). You can also call (419) 386-7993. Remember that every little bit helps, and if everyone gives a little, it will help Nic do quite a lot.
