Uses and Gratification Theory This theory is basically an approach on how to recognise mass communication, and also how

media affects the target audience. It proposes that media takes a dynamic role in an everyday persons life as they put media into their daily activities and also integrating it into their own lives. This allows the media to guide them on how to live. Different people are presented through the different mediums of media; for example films, Music Videos etc. however, do not give you material, or help you to understand your individual character. Instead they deliver entertainment to the audience, and offer visual satisfaction. In other words it is used as a device for assisting time to pass by. For example when youve just finished a long day of work you might just want to sit down and watch TV to entertain yourself. Media also enables you to interact with your family and friends more. Comedy dramas helps the audience release stress because they will be laughing at other peoples misfortune, this could help them forget about their troubles and lets the enjoy themselves. The media has certain influences over people such as what they should be scared of, e.g. being afraid of the dark or bugs and even people sometimes these fears are normally generated from what the media shows us e.g. in a thriller film, if somebody is portrayed to be a stalker, you are more likely to be scared of every person who you may undertake to be dangerous or threatening. Horrors also play roles in creating some common phobias which are likely to affect the viewer for a short period of time or even forever. This proposes that media has an impact on everyones life because it could have a small effect, or even a large effect on peoples lives. Whether it is books, music, magazines, media can affect peoples lives for the better or for the worse. Watching Comedy dramas can also help provide social interaction. The protagonist in drama films is always there to set some kind of example to the audience about the good and bad consequences of certain decisions. It can affect how people view society, or animals, and encourage them into doing the right thing. Nonetheless, it can also have a negative impact on certain people who would gain ideas from watching drama causing them to do the wrong things. E.g. our film could encourage older men to go on chat websites to attract young females although that isnt our films intention.

How our short film will use the users and gratification theory. Emotional release: As the audience watches our film, they will be relieved of any emotional stress theyre going and will focus more on enjoying our film.

Pleasure: The audience will thoroughly enjoy our film and will be intrigued by our detailed storyline and plot twist, therefore will be more into the film. Escape and Diversion: While watching our film, the audience will be able to escape from their troubles and will be diverted into focusing more on the narrative and characters of our film. Family and friends: The audience will most probably be watching our film with either friends or family and will have plenty to talk about at the end of the film; this could bring them closer together. Overall, I think that our film will definitely be interesting enough to make our audience forget about their troubles; our film is funny enough to have the audience talking about it days after watching it.
