Top TCS to replace BT at SIA Source: Tech Market View / 29 August 2013 Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has bagged itself what looks like a good fit for it in the UK public sector. An OJEU notice confirms TCS as the winner of 13 million, five-year, IT managed services contract for the Security Industry Authority, the organisation responsible for regulating the private security industry in the UK, reporting to the Home Secretary. 36% of the contract by value will be subcontracted to a hosting partner. The contract involves the provision of an integrated operational customer relationship and case managed solution to support delivery of the organisations end -to-end business processes. The system will need to interface with information partners such as the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) and HM Passport Office (HM PO). We understand that the incumbent at the SIA is Liverpool Direct Limited (LDL), the joint venture between BT and Liverpool County Council; LDL has held the contract since 2007. TCS will have to enable an effective transition from LDL and existing in-house operational solutions. Top The new digital mobile consumer is on the rise, but what does this mean for the telecoms industry? By Satya Ramaswamy, global head of digital enterprise at Tata Consultancy Services. Source: Computer Weekly/ 27 August 2013 This guest blog post comes from Satya Ramaswamy, who is global head of digital enterprise at Tata Consultancy Services. It looks at how the telecoms industry is being impacted by the fact that mobile activity is becoming the norm in the digital age. The new digital mobile consumer is on the rise, but what does this mean for the telecoms industry? "For many consumers around the world, mobile devices have become one of life's basic necessities, and this passion shows no signs of abating. Over the last decade, consumers have purchased smartphones and tablet computers at an astonishing rate. The iPhone took only eight quarters to ship more than 20 million units following its launch in 2007. In 2010, that adoption rate was eclipsed by the iPad. Two years after it began shipping, Apple's tablet passed the 65 million unit mark - an adoption rate three times that of the iPhone.

Digital disruption Consumers' love affair with mobile devices is not likely to fade away soon. As devices become ever more powerful and as wireless transmission grows in bandwidth and coverage, the adoption rate is likely to only climb further. The telecommunications industry recognises the importance of digital and mobile consumers, and is taking a leading stance across consumer-facing industries. In The New Digital Mobile Consumer report, commissioned by Tata Consultancy Services, telecoms companies have identified that 48% of consumer purchases are currently being made through mobile devices, and they predicted this will rise to 60% by 2015. Indicating the scale of this commitment, last year the telecommunications industry was the sector which most significantly adapted its products and services to meet the needs of digital mobile consumers. The sector is expected to maintain its mobile leadership through 2015. During the period 2012 to 2015, telecoms firms will be the second highest spending of all industries, with the $28.6 million spent per company in 2012 rising to $35 million in 2015. However, other industries expect to close the gap over the next three years. Top Unraveling Legacy Thinking: 5 New Ways To Think About Insurance Technology by Sam Medina, Vice President and Head of Strategy and Transformation for Insurance and Healthcare at Tata Consultancy Services Source: Insurance and Technology / 26 August 2013 For insurers, the marketplace is changing. Companies, striving to meet evolving customer demands, are launching competitive products and services that enhance the customer experience through additional touch points. As this evolution occurs, many CIOs see their legacy technology systems as dated assets hindering development and innovation. However, it's often legacy thinking -- not just legacy systems -- that prevents insurers from taking the necessary steps to shape their company's future. Legacy thinking, the thought process whereby new ideas are filtered out in favor of existing beliefs, accepted concepts, and widelyknown generalizations, prevents company progress. Legacy thinking can pervade a company culture and actively prevent innovation and new, creative solutions from improving the current models. While legacy systems primarily reside in data centers, legacy thinkers populate the workforce. To successfully transform your businesses, old ways of thinking need to be challenged. CIOs must strive to create an environment that will enable insurers to focus on creating the future of their business. At Tata Consultancy Services, we regularly see the same examples of traditional thinking crop up in our insurance industry clients. My hope is that my responses below to these misconceptions will help you take a little step forward in transforming your thinking and your business, and the insurance industry: Legacy Thought #1: Legacy systems have no value and having them is our biggest problem. Legacy systems are valuable. They contain business rules that have evolved over time, records of products and services, client information, and reflect what experts have learned over many

years. In most cases, legacy systems still run the day-to-day business, are 100% paid-for, and contain data that can be mined to develop new products and services.
