EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A 10 day community work was undertaken with the following objectives in mind. To create an awareness of Social & Environmental issues of the day & thereby a deeper understanding of the human community & self To develop a sense of concern & commitment to the weak & under privileged in the community To understand wide variety of Community development initiatives To familiarize the new avenues & opportunities for Social entrepreneurship

The organization chosen for community work was Makkala Jagrithi. Makkala Jagrithi is an NGO that aims to reach out to children especially the less fortunate and empower them to pursue their goals and dreams. At Makkala Jagrithi, various creative activities and interactive sessions were conducted with children from 1st Grade till 8th Grade. Avant-garde methods of teaching were suggested by the staff at Makkala Jagrithi so that children would learn ordinary concepts in an extraordinary way. The entire experience was enriching and worthwhile. A small glimpse into the impediments faced by children that prevented them from pursuing higher education was understood during the 10 day stint at Makkala Jagrithi. As an individual, the various things that we could do to change this situation were also learned.

CHAPTER 1

PROFILE OF NGO
Definition of NGO Non-governmental organization (NGO) is basically a legally constituted organization which is operated by legal persons who act independently from any government. In those cases where the NGOs are funded partially or completely by governments, the NGO barred the government representatives from any membership in the organization in order to sustain its nongovernmental status. The term is used for those organizations which have wider social target with political aspects. However, any NGO cannot be blatantly political organizations. The term non-governmental organization has no agreed legal definition and these are termed as civil society organizations in many jurisdictions. Across the world, the number of internationally operating NGOs is around 40,000. The number of national NGO in countries is even higher with around 1-2 million NGOs in India and 277,000 NGOs in Russia. The remodelling processes of the welfare state have led to the rapid development of the non-governmental sector in western countries. With increasing globalization, the intensity of such processes has increased further. In the 20th century, the Globalization makes the people understand the importance of NGOs. There are many problems which could not be solved effectively within a country. The international bodies at a global level including international organizations like World Trade Organization were considered to be too centred to favour the interests of capitalist firms. The growth and rise of NGO is seen as an attempt to offset this trend, where NGO emphasize the core issue related to human cause like sustainable development, developmental aid and other humanitarian issues. One such remarkable example of organization for raising the cause of people is World Social Forum.

Makkala Jagrithi Vison

Makkala Jagrithi is a value based social movement to empower the child and its community towards a bright future. Mission Makkala Jagrithi will facilitate holistic development for the children and the diverse groups, in and around the community, to build a sustainable and equitable society. Makkala Jagrithis mission is to create a positive difference to the childs quality of learning and development Evolution of Vision & Mission statement Makkala Jagrithi consciously practices an inclusive approach. Therefore at all levels we attempt to bring diverse strengths to build the organization. Towards this belief, in the year 2006 Makkala Jagrithi invited different stakeholders to be part of Vision building. Close to 55+ people took part in this event titled - Makkala Jagritiya Sundara Dharshana" (meaning: Makkala Jagrithis beautiful vision, this name was given by children). For 2 days there were had interactive discussions with committed children, parents, NGO & corporate partners, educationists, consultants, volunteers and well wishers.
Philosophy

The experience with various marginalised communities mirrors the fact that children, especially those from dis-privileged backgrounds, have little or no awareness and opportunity to learn beyond the school curriculum. School drop-outs find even lesser forums to learn around them. Perhaps, this kind of situation compels them to limit their ability to explore, experiment and empower themselves toward critical development learning opportunities, which is out of their reach. Makkala Jagrithi realizes that holistic development for children is no more a luxury, but essential to build oneself!

It is therefore essential to create an environment, which is non-threatening to learn and grow from multiple platforms of opportunities. It believes such spaces will encourage the children and the youth to express their desire to learn without fear or inhibitions. Similar learning spaces for parents are essential, as they can recognise the importance of education and also learn about healthy parenting.

The above experience & understanding has enabled Makkala Jagrithi to build a sustainable social system, which has opened up new possibilities of learning through holistic development approach. We realized, to bring about change in the social system, it needs support of all stakeholders. Therefore, Makkala Jagrithi has been consciously involving parents, adults and other people in the community to help children to unleash their potential to Discover The Light Within. . Makkala Jagrithi works in such a way that an environment is stimulated where children can learn and grow by being themselves and not pseudo-adults. Makkala Jagrithi aims to educate the child in unconventional but promising ways such as interactive sessions, creative activities, games and much more. Makkala Jagrithi has a set of dedicated staff and volunteers that give the best of their abilities to ensure the children learn. The support of parents, teachers and the community is also sought by Makkala Jagrithi so that the whole learning experience on part of the child can be much more worthwhile and enriching. Makkala Jagrithi believes that a behavioral paradigm shift is essential in order for a child to live betters physically, emotionally and mentally. Hence the teaching in community centers is based on behavioral sciences. Makkala Jagrithi teaches its children in an environment that encourages exploration, experimentation and freedom. Most of the students that come to learn at Makkala Jagrithi are deprived of such an environment due to various reasons, a major one being poverty. Makkala Jagrithi aims to provide an all round and holistic development. It encourages students to pursue their interests in life and settle for nothing less. It provides necessary support to children so that they pursue their interested career paths. There are inspiring instances where students of Makkala Jagrithi have gone on to become professional Taekwondo and karate trainers. Some of them have even voluntarily become staff of Makkala Jagrithi and uplift other children.

Core Values At Makkala Jagrithi, the world is seen from a child's point of view. Its child-centric approach allows them to respect the child's physical, professional and learning boundaries. They unconditionally accept all the children, irrespective of their background, gender and ability level. They also trust the children and believe that they have the freedom to make their own choices. Meaning Makkala Jagrithi is a Kannada word which when translated to English literally means Awakening of Children. Makkala Jagrithi was founded in the year 2003 by Mrs. Joy who gave up her promising corporate career so that she could serve society more. Makkala Jagrithi aims to create a holistic learning environment for economically and emotionally deprived children. Activities Makkala Jagrithi reaches out to the children in the following ways. Learning Centers Educational Scholarship Workshops, Training and Mentoring Youth Intervention and Community Development

Learning Centers Learning Centers are set up in Government schools and in Communities with the intention of proving holistic development to children. The development is achieved in a non-formal and creative way. This includes activities such as reading, sports activities, special coaching for academic activities, computer education, life skills, and theme based projects, civic and health awareness. School-dropouts are helped by building their self-confidence and by exposing them to various activities around them. They are also being send to schools where they can have formal educaIf not, they are sent to the community centers of Makkala Jagrithi where they receive informal education.

Educational Scholarships

Makkala Jagrithi believes that e very child has a right to education. However, there are many children whose parents are unable to provide for the basic expenses to educate them. Makkala Jagrithi supports such children by sponsoring their educational needs. Our sponsorships cover the childs expenses towards school fees, books and uniforms. Our support has resulted in a very positive influence on both the children and their families. Some of the benefits of such support are:

Children are not compelled to drop out of school for financial reasons. Children are liberated from the pressure, punishments and harassment by school officials for non-payment of fees.

Children feel free of stress and anxieties and can concentrate better on their studies. Their parents feel relieved of a huge burden, as their children are able to continue education.

To ensure that parents remain responsible and accountable for their childrens education, Makkala Jagrithi makes sure that they contribute anywhere between 10-20% of the total expenses.

Workshops, Training and Mentoring Periodic training is conducted for parents, youth, teachers and staff towards personality development based on experiential methodology To ensure that there is an ongoing positive development in the childs life, Makkala Jagriti works very closely with parents, teachers and the community through various workshops.

Makkala Jagrithi believes that Parents and Educators are partners, who facilitate the development of children on the road to becoming productive adults. At Makkala Jagriti, this partnership is

encouraged. To be effective in this role, it is essential for the parents to go through periods of reflection where they can examine their own attitudes and social conditioning in relation to their children. To assist this process of self-awareness, Makkala Jagriti conducts periodic workshops on parenting for parents from different communities. The focus of parenting workshops is to promote self-awareness leading to an enhanced understanding of themselves, those around them and their role as parents. The workshops also help them develop a better understanding of their children and the disparities that exist between the home environment and the outside world. Monthly parent meetings at the learning centers consistently strengthen the learning and awareness gained through our programs. Makkala Jagrithi believes that there must be a paradigm shift from a teacher centered classroom to a learner centered classroom, where the teachers role changes from a sage on a stage to a guide by the side. Significant improvement in the quality of education can be achieved by bringing about this change in the teachers.

Makkala Jagriti designs & conducts workshops for teachers, in the areas of:

Philosophy/approaches to learning Sociology of education Communication Skills development Designing curriculum Creating teachers learning aids

Teachers are constantly challenged to review their perception of children and to re-assess their values, attitudes and behaviors in order to break free from certain myths, biases, judgments and stereotypes.

Youth Leadership Programs Youth Leadership programmes focus on the areas of self-work towards building confidence, motivation, communication, leadership, teamwork and other basic life skills. We conduct them for the age group of 14 to 19 years in order to:

Develop a positive attitude Facilitate learning from peers Nurture personality development Evolve a personal vision, mission & values Enable the participants to impact and influence friends, acquaintances, family, community & society.

Makkala Jagrithi works with young adults, in the age group of 12 to 20 years, many of whom are from troubled family backgrounds, and has encouraged Makkala Jagrithi to explore different methodologies. As many of the children we work with are emotionally vulnerable, it has found that a steady mentoring relationship is the positive energy needed to help these young adults along in their journey of transformation. Among NGO partners, Dream A Dream plays a significant role in building this initiative.

Youth Intervention and Community Development Makkala Jagrithi ties up with different partners so that there is an influx of livelihood programs to youth and adults in the community. Career counseling and guidance is provided to children wishing to continue their higher studies. Other highlights include internships for young adults at leaning centers to prepare them for employment and also guide youth for employment opportunities. An empowered community serves as a foundation for sustainable development and Makkala Jagrithi strives to build people within the community who will, eventually, take ownership of the learning centres and further their development.

While work with children, parents and nearby schools is its priority, Makkala Jagrithi feels it is extremely important to engage in other areas of development, as well, to make efforts holistic. Therefore, there is a need to focus on the advancement of the community as a whole, thus bringing a positive change in every aspect of peoples lives by:

Networking with partners to bring livelihood programmes to youth and adults in the community.

Doing career counselling and helping older children wishing to pursue higher studies or vocational courses.

Offering internships for young adults at learning centers to prepare them for employment and guiding youth with employment issues.

Facilitating adult literacy. Create awareness (through our partners) about hygiene, civic amenities and conduct sessions on health & sex education.

Future Plans For Community Development The essence of the Makkala Jagrithi model is to provide a platform for all the stakeholders to function synergistically and thereby create a quality-learning environment for the economically disadvantaged child. Makkala Jagrithi believes in consistently building capability within the community to empower them to lead all facets of the Learning Centre.

Partnerships Makkala Jagrithi has also partnered with various other NGOs in order to maximize the benefits that can be given to the children. Few of the NGOS that have partnered up with Makkala Jagrithi are: CMCA CMCA is an innovative programme designed to foster and nurture active citizenship in children, founded on the belief that children are powerful messengers of change. The CMCA had launched civic clubs in schools in Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Dharwad and Mumbai with the aim of making children aware of their civic responsibilities. The clubs reached out to more than 50,000 children and their families. Through CMCA, children at Makkala Jagrithi are made aware of their civic responsibilities. Bala Janagraha Bala Janagraha is a uniquely designed citizenship education programme that is aimed at empowering children with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to develop a deep sense of ownership and responsibility towards their society. Bala Janagrahas curriculum the Me and My City module is civics in practice. Through interactive classroom sessions and project work, the programme helps schoolchildren discover the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Bala Janagraha programme demystifies local government, introduces the political relevance of the ward and stresses the need for citizen participation in local governance.

CMCA Bala Janagraha Hippocampus DreamaDream Enfold India Ivolunteer.

Bala Janagraha provides civic education for children at Makkala Jagrithi and helps them understand their responsibilities towards society. Hippocampus Hippocampus provides books, puzzles and other games to NGOs like Makkala Jagrithi free of cost so that children can have access to lots of books and enhance their reading skills and vocabulary. DreamaDream Dreama Dream empowers young people from vulnerable backgrounds by developing life skills and at the same time sensitizing the community through active volunteering leading to a nondiscriminatory society where unique differences are appreciated. In NGOs like Makkala Jagrithi, Football Training is provided to kids in schools. Enfold India Enfold India has partnered along with Makkala Jagrithi to educate children in the area of sex education. Ivolunteer Ivolunteer and Makkala Jagrithi have partnered up so that willing volunteers can contribute with their skills towards teaching the children at Makkala Jagrithi. Makkala Jagrithi can save the time it spends searching for volunteers.

CHAPTER 2 ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

Makkala Jagrithi has an unconventional organizational structure. The organizational structure helps foster creativity for its employees and also reduces red tapism. Following are the Different echelons of the Hierarchy at Makkala Jagrithi. Board of Directors Makkala Jagrithi is headed by The Board of Directors who takes all important decisions pertaining to opening of new centers, appointment of new staff etc.There are currently four members on the Board of Directors. Three of the people on the board work part time as they have jobs with corporate also. One of them works full time. The people on the Board of Directors are 1. Mrs. Joy Srinivasan(Founder of Makkala Jagrithi) 2. Mr. Vishwanathan G. 3. Mr. Rangha 4. Mr. Shaheen Ali Managing Trustee A managing trustee who is part of the board of directors implements the decisions taken at the board meeting. The current Managing trustee is Mrs. Joy Srinivasan who is also in the board of Directors.

Project Manager Under the Managing Trustee, there is a Project Manager who implements a program each. He designs the different projects based on the different goals of the firm and also sees to it implements it so that. He has a team of project co-coordinators to assist him in implementing his goals. The current Project Makkala Jagrithi is lying vacant. Project Co-coordinators The Project Coordinators comes under the purview of the Project Managers and they help the Project Manager in implementing the projects designed and activities designed Makkala Jagrithi in schools and communities. They can also modify the projects based on the needs of each Community or School. There are in total 3 project co-coordinator, one each to overlook the activities in Government school, Community Centers and Balamandira. The names of the Project coordinators are given below. 1. Government Schools- Mr. Chetan 2. Balamandira-Ms. Bharati 3. Community Centre- Nil(Vacant) Team Leaders Each Project coordinator is provided with a project leader who goes into managing the details of the activities in schools or communities. It is the responsibility of the team leader to ensure that the details of each project are implemented. Following are the names of the team leaders. 1. Siddapura Community centre- Mr. Sharath 2. CHAPTER 3 DAY WISE REPORTS

Community Work Report (Day 1) Date:-25th February 2013 Objectives To get acquainted with the activities of MAKKALA JAGRITHI. To develop a better rapport with the administrative and functional staff at MAKKALA JAGRITHI.

Observations Makkala Jagrithi is a charity organization that caters to the need of impoverished or unprivileged children. Unlike many other organization of its kind, MAKKALA JAGRITHI is into empowering children. They encourage children to pursue a dream of their choice and help them pursue it. Makkala Jagrithi has a community centre and 5 centres where they conduct activities in conjunction with schools. The community centre at Audugodi helps children learn ordinary things in an extraordinary way. Children are taught using creative techniques such as ART, MUSIC, INTERACTION etc. Emphasis is laid on the holistic development of the child. The Makkala Jagrithi branch at the government school in Dairy Circle is different. Children in the school go this place during library hours and spent time with the volunteers. They are empowered and motivated to achieve their goals in life. They are also taught using creative ways. Emphasis is laid on extracurricular activities. Inference (Introspection) Makkala Jagrithi is creating a very huge impact in life of kids its supports as it enables them to be self-reliant. It is also setting a benchmark for other organizations in the same field.

Volunteers and staff at Makkala Jagrithi are an exemplary and are also part time volunteers to understand more about community work.

Community Work Report (Day 2) Date:-26th February 2013 Objectives To understand the nature of activities at MAKKALA JAGRITHI community centre located at Audugodi To note the differences in nature of activities conducted at the Government Schools and Community Centers Observations The activities in the Community centre are done with so that children learn maximum things in a creative manner. The Community centre at Audugodi has also tied up with Little Angels School to provide training for their children. Here, there are activities conducted for children as well for youth. The activities for children are conducted in the afternoon where the activities for the youth are conducted in the evening. For children, on all weekdays learning activities are conducted. Saturdays are meant to fun-days where only games are played so that relieved from learning once in a week. Before the activities start, there is a concept called as CIRCLE TIME, where in all the children and volunteers sit in a circle. Each child and the volunteer are required to tell their names and also tell their feeling and expectations from the activities. This is followed by ANNOUNCEMENT TIME where the volunteers announce the activities for the day based on the feelings and expectations of the children. Various interactive activities are conducted based on what the children require. Inference (Introspection) The community centres ensure that a balance between learning and leisure are maintained through their concept of FUN DAYS on Saturdays Community centres unlike schools centers provide activities for the youth as well as children. Community centres have children from different schools whereas in school centres, training is provided only for the children from the specific children. 23

Timings in the Community Centers are more flexible when compared to the school.

Community Work Report (Day 3) Date:-27th February 2013 Objectives To know about the organizational structure about MAKKALA JAGRITHI.

Observations Makkala Jagrithi has an unconventional organizational structure. Inference (Introspection) Makkala Jagrithi has a very flexible organizational structure The organizational structure of Makkala Jagrithi ensures de-centralization of power. The organizational structures helps maintain create communication between employees both vertically as well as horizontally.

Community Work Report (Day 4) Date:-28th February 2013 Objectives To observe and know about the activities MAKKALA JAGRITHI uses to train children in schools.

Observations Makkala Jagrithi aims at creating an environment where children can be themselves. They aim at teaching theoretical subjects in an innovative way such that children wouldnt find it monotonous. The observations at the school were that children are engaged in games which they find it interesting. The games aim at providing a holistic development. Physical training in the form of games is given so that the children develop physically. Games which involve teamwork are played more. Art and craft, Dance and Singing are some of the other few activities that are employed by the Volunteers of Makkala Jagrithi to enhance creativity .The aim is to develop the use of both parts of the brain by the children Inference (Introspection) Creativity of the children is enhanced by the activities conducted. Monotony is avoided through activities THE CONCEPTS TAUGHT THROUGH CREATIVE ACTIVITIES ARE RECOLLECTED FASTER AND BETTER BY CHILDREN.

Community Work Report (Day 5) Date:-1st March 2013 Objectives To organize an interactive session with the children. Observations An interactive session on creativity was created for the students of Makkala Jagrithi. A musical instrument known as Jal TARANG was taught to them. Jal Tarang is an instrument that uses the difference levels in water to produce sound. The students were trying ways to create different sounds by altering levels. They were engrossed in creating the activity for a lot of time Inference (Introspection) Enthusiasm is enhanced by using creative activities such as Music, Art and Craft

Community Work Report (Day 6) Date:-2nd March 2013 Objectives To organize an interactive session through kids through a story session. Observations Before the story session was announced all children were less interested in the class. Once they got to know the story session would happen, they were intrigued and interested in the session. Everyone was quiet during the narration. It was noticed that the interest increased whenever there were facial gestures and voice modulations corresponding to that of the characters in the story. The students were still more captivated when they were asked to recapitulate the story. Inference (Introspection) Listening skills of the students are increased when activities such as story telling is conducted. The attention levels of the children can be increased by enacting appropriate hand of facial gestures and modulating the voice whenever required. Students tend to imbibe values through stories that are moral based.

Community Work Report (Day 7) Date: - 6th March 2013 Objectives To organize an activity session through games such as jigsaw puzzles and Lego Bricks. Observations Children were given different games such as puzzles and Lego Bricks. The Children were engrossed in their activities throughout the whole session. It was observed that initially children who were doing the puzzles individually were finding it difficult to finish it. However with their classmates joining them in helping them finish the puzzles, they were able to finish the activities faster. Lego bricks helped the students in developing their analytical skills. The Lego Bricks worked better with the kids of Kindergarten when compared to the Middle School. Inference (Introspection) Students displayed teamwork and co-ordination when it came to solving puzzles. They were also able to built better shapes using Lego Bricks when they worked as a team. Students were silent and completely engrossed in their activities. Such silence was difficult to be observed when other activities were conducted. Such activities can be used to build teamwork...

Observations: A game known as tiger and the lamb was played with children. Students were required to form a large circle. Two people, one representing the tiger and the other the lamb were required to stand outside and inside the circle respectively. The tiger was required to catch the lamb. The students were enthusiastic about this game. Upon observation, this game had generated maximum enthusiasm among the children. It was also noticed that bonding between kids had increased after activities like this. Inference (Introspection) Activities associated with physical work or physical education generates more enthusiasm in kids when compared to other activities. Bonding is increased before and after such activities. Through the game of tiger and lamb, students learnt to meaning of the proverb UNITY IS STRENGTH. Together as a group, they could save the lamb.

Community Work Report (Day 9) Date: - 8th March 2013 Objectives To teach the children about the different types of fruits. Observations Preparation was done beforehand itself. Different shapes of fruits were cut out and were made in the form of masks. Children were asked to wear it. Different children were given different masks. A student was called forward and the fruit that the child wore as a mask was explained about. Once all the fruits were explained, students were asked to partner up and describe about the fruits their partner wore as a mask. The students were asked to address each other through the class as the names of the fruit and not their real names. Finally the students were asked to draw the fruits on a blank sheet. Inference (Introspection) It was observed that the students were able to retain the names of the fruits much faster after this activity was conducted. Students tend to remember names longer if creative activities are conducted.

Community Work Report (Day 10) Date: - 9th March 2013 Objectives To conduct fun and leisure related activities at Community Centre. Observations Every Saturday at Makkala Jagrithi Community Centers is a fun day. Students engage in leisure and fun activities. Before the activities start there is a concept of CIRCLE TIME. Here all the children address their feelings and developments over the whole weeks. It based on the information given in the circle time that activities are formulated. Introduction of students was also done in an innovative way wherein a student was required to throw a box at random student. The latter would introduce himself and further throw it at another random student. Who would introduce himself. Fun activities such as Musical chairs, Passing the Parcel, and Folding the paper were conducted. The class concluded with an announcement that an adventure trek would be conducted for students in the month of May.

Inference (Introspection) The concept of FUN DAY ensures that children dont feel stressed out or bored when the weekend nears. It is also proof that MAKKALA JAGRITHI ensures on the all round development of the child. Concept of CIRCLE TIME helps conduct activities based on the need of the children. Such a concept ensures that children have adequate amount of FUN needed to relieve them of stress accumulated over the past weeks.

CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION
The experience at Makkala Jagrithi was enriching and worthwhile. helped broaden my understanding of what an NGO is and how it functions. Many misconceptions regarding the functioning of NGOs and government schools were cleared after this NGO visit. It also helped understand the behavior of children to a certain extent and also taught how to interact with a kid in different scenarios. It was also learning ground on how to be more patient with children. Teaching kids using creative ways helped augment their understanding on various subjects and topics. Creative ways help children retain subjects for a longer period of time. A deep insight into the lives of underprivileged children was gained as a result of this visit which otherwise would have been difficult to gain. The challenges, the dreams and the hopes of children were understood through this visit. I could also learn that as an individual, how I could contribute to educate and uplift them. As an individual how we could contribute was also gained. Knowledge was gained on new ways to bond with children and also how to increase creativity among them. Different activities that were made in order to break the ice with children was learned during the visit to Makkala Jagrithi. The NGO concept is undergoing a radical shift. Earlier it was thought of as a voluntary activity. However after observing and interacting with the volunteers and staff and Makkala Jagrithi it was understood that the jobs at NGOs require highly qualified and trained individuals. Specific training is given to individuals based on the nature of activity of the NGO. At Makkala Jagrithi, the staff undergoes meeting and skills development program on a regular basis in order to enhance their skills. Goals and targets are also set on what needs to achieved. The goals are set based on previous achievements. Working at an NGO also requires complete commitment on part of the staff. The community work also taught how time could be utilized in a judicious and wise manner. Sparing a little time from ones side for NGO work could make a positive impact in another individuals who receives the help as well the person who helps. Moreover, it eventually helps in contributing towards the development of the society in the long run.

The work at Makkala Jagrithi also helped me know more ways to how I could expand my teaching activites at SOS Childrens Village. The teaching experience at Makkala Jagrithi helped me understand innovative ways to teach children. A few of them were the use of creative designs to retain the memory of students. On the whole it was a very new learning experience and a memory that I would certainly cherish.
