CASE STUDY ON PROJECT

CLAIM

1) GENERAL INFORMATION:
Improvement and up gradation of Road, in the hilly terrain . The road passes through hilly terrains. The work generally involves earth work in formation and cutting for widening of road formation and extension / new construction of culverts, drainages, etc. 2) THE SCOPE OF WORK

2.1 Earthwork in Filling :


Activity includes filing of earth in layers not exceeding 200mm in depth. Top 500mm earth filling is known as Subgrade and the layers below are known as Embankment.

2.2 Granular Sub-base (GSB): Activity consists of laying and compacting of granular material in 200 mm depth single compacted layer. This is the first sub-base layer forming part of the road crust (structure) with material as per the required specifications.
2.3 Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) : Activity consists of laying and compacting of WMM material as per the required specifications in a layer of 150 mm compacted thickness.

Bituminous layers(BM) Activity consists of laying and compacting of bituminous layers (50 mm) in with sensor pavers as per lines and levels. The material used

in the layers should be of required specification and mixed properly in Hot Mix Plant (HMP). Tack coat is applied before laying of bituminous layer. 3) CIRCUMSTANCES AND CAUSE OF LOSS Date of Loss On various dates starting from June 2007 till September.07

From the metrological report it is apparent that there were heavy rain fall on various dates in and around the Aizawal city where the project work is going on. The excessive rains caused flooding of the roads under construction, at several places to varying degrees.

4) CAUSE OF BREAKDOWN

From June,07 onwards till September,07, there were heavy rainfalls, which lead to the filling up of the fully/semi- constructed portions. The water seeped into the finished/semi-finished stretches of the road leading to the damage to its surface at various stretches.

The news of flooding was widely publicized in local newspapers.

5) EXTENT OF DAMAGE The flood caused extensive damage to road under construction, as under Various compressed layers of the road( i.e. GSB, WMM,BM & MSS) at various places got washed away with water.

Development of wide and deep potholes on the road at several places were seen. Damage to the shoulders at both the edges of the road were observed. Damage to various sections of the road due to landslides (i.e. event which is occurring regularly during rainy seasons in the hills) were noticed.

6) INSUREDS CLAIM The Insured has estimated their loss on account rains causing inundations at total of Rs.4,40,54,000, as per breakup given below:
