Assumption Takes Girls Race, Wildcats Top Area Finisher TIPTON The Davenport Assumption girls cross-country team won the Tipton Invitational last week at city park after scoring a team low 18 points at the meet. Mt. Vernon-Lisbon was second with 81 team points and Solon third with 103 points. The Durant Wildcats were the top area finisher with a 7th place finish with 210 team points. The Wildcats were led by Alyssa Williams with a 9th place finish in 16:34. Cheyanne Heinrich was next with a 24th place finish in 17:26. I think its always nice to have girls in the top-10 especially at a meet where you run against schools like Assumption and Solon. She (Alyssa) did a good job competiting at that level, said Durant coach Jim Weisrock. I think that with time, and more focus on speed work the two packs will form into one and that will make us a stronger team. The girls did a good job of getting out fast and that will help them in bigger meets, he said. Other Wildcat finishers were Janey Botkins 53rd in 18:57, Madison Howe 61st in 19:34, Sam Fusco 63rd in 19:54, Emily Mundt 73rd in 20:58 and Susan
Graves 77th in 21:38. Wilton placed 10th as a team with 257 team points. Caitlin Bisbey was the top Beaver finisher with a 19th place finish in 17:!6. Kaylee Ford was next with a 26th place finish in 17:32. North Cedar and Tipton were among five schools with partial, non-scoring teams at the meet. The Knights top finisher came from Cortlyn Kasik in 56th place in a time of 18:54. Kylie Marshall was 70th and Madison Marshall finished in 80th place. Tiptons lone varsity runner was Jennifer Shaffer. Shaffer finished 51st in a time of 18:34. Jennifers performances have increasingly gotten better the last three meets. My goal for her is to place in the top-10 at the district meet and qualify as an individual to the state meet, said Tipton coach Eric Walsh. After subtracting the large amount of 3A and 4A runners, she placed 18th among the 2A competition at the meet, he said. North Cedar coach Dain Jeppson said that his goal for the girls team is the same as the boys team. Our goal is pretty simple really, its to stay positive and keep improving, said North Cedar coach Dain Jeppson. We are working on pacing and race strategy in practice, he said.
