Bionolle Starcla is a bio-based environmentally friendly material which is completely biodegradable. Bionolle Starcla is a hybrid compound of Bionolle, starch and PLA. Bionolle Starcla becomes biodegradable in compost, wet soil, fresh water, seawater and activated sludge where microorganisms are present. It will decompose completely into water and carbon dioxide, and is therefore called Eco friendly material.

HISTORY
Showa Denko succeeded in the commercial production of Bionolle in 1993; the first commercially produced PBS polyester in the world. Since then, we have been supplying Bionolle to the market and improving its quality. It is applied in a variety of applications to provide solutions to environmental issues. To contribute to the building of a sustainable society, we have developed Bionolle / Starch compound in 2006 and Bionolle / Starch / PLA compound, known as Bionolle Starcla series, in 2011. We are now advancing the development of bio based Bionolle.

Bionolle Starcla can be used for various purposes instead of polyethylene products because the balance of mechanical properties is better than conventional polyethylene products. Bionolle Starcla enables production of an extremely thin film of 8m and has excellent printability. Due to its biodegradable nature, Bionolle Starcla is the ideal resin for use in mulching films and compost bags.

Grades

STARCLA 10S, 25S and 40S

Three different grades of Bionolle Starcla are commercially available. These grades show high biomass contents due to PLA and uniformly dispersed starch. They all have a MFR of less than 3 g/10 min. This makes these grades suitable for extrusion processes, especially for blown film extrusion. Starcla 10S is flexible and shows fast biodegradation and Starcla 40S is rigid and shows slow biodegradation. Starcla 25S shows intermediate properties between these two grades. With specific formulations, rigidity and speed of biodegradation can be easily controlled.

FIG 1 ACCELERATED BIODEGRADATION TEST Accelerated biodegradation measured by weight reduction with Starcla 10S, 25S, 40S and Bionolle 1001 MD. Samples (3 cm wide, 9 cm long and 20 m thick) are buried in compost at 40 C; keeping a 3 cm long edge of the sample on the surface of the compost. The container of the compost is kept in an oven and samples are taken out periodically and weighed.

RECOMMENDED PROCESSING CONDITIONS

Starcla convinces with its excellent mechanical properties. Without major modifications conventional film extrusion machines for LLDPE may be used to achieve best film results.

High take up tower

Low compression ratio screw

Air ring designed for LLDPE Large air volume Low temperature Temperature < 160 C

Starcla shows excellent processability in blown film extrusion. In our trial, 8 m thick and 1250 mm wide film was successfully produced using Starcla 25S by a commercial machine. The trial was held over the course of three hours during which the bubble did not collapse.

CAUTION (1) Bionolle Starcla has not been approved for use in medical, cosmetics or food contact applications. Please be sure to contact our sales person in advance in case of using Bionolle for those applications. (2) Rates of biodegradation vary largely by the surrounding environment and Bionolle may undergo hydrolysis by moisture in the air. Consequently, the mechanical properties will be deteriorated. Customers and users are requested to make their own independent determination that the products are suitable for the intended use.
