Labours new Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven
Nancy led the successful campaign to prevent the closure of Brighton Fire Station and campaigned for the South Downs to be granted National Park Status by the last Labour Government. She has spent most of her working life campaigning in the voluntary sector on issues such as affordable childcare, health inequalities, low pay and child poverty. She led the campaign that delivered Sure Start centres for every community and a campaign to tackle extortionate energy prices for the least well off. Nancy knows just how tough life can be for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven residents. She says: When I was 18 my parents could not afford to send me to university so I gained a degree level qualification by studying in the evenings after my day job for the fire brigade. At the time I was fortunate to work for an employer that was willing to help with the cost of studying but most people are not in this position. What you achieve in life should not depend on your postcode or your parents bank balance. That is something I am very passionate about.

Cost of living leaves people worse off

I have met people whose pay or hours are being cut whilst their bills are rising. At a time when many of us are struggling to get by, this Government sees fit to grant a tax cut to millionaires. Labour will increase training and job opportunities; we will invest in the future and reduce the deficit by growing our economy in a sustainable way.

Happy birthday!
Labour celebrated the 65th birthday of the NHS by taking a giant birthday card out to the streets for people to sign. Anne Pissaridou, councillor for Wish ward in Hove, said So many people wanted to sign in support of the NHS that we ran out of space on the card! Labour founded the NHS and has always been committed to a national health service of the best possible quality.

What did the Labour government do for the environment?

While the coalition government backs away from its climate change promises, many people are still benefitting today from Labours policies which have promoted green jobs, more energy-efficient homes, a cleaner environment, access to the countryside and conservation. In 2001 the Countryside and rights of Way Act established the right to roam across thousands of acres of land. In 2008 the Marine and Coastal Access Act enshrined in law public access to the coastline. New national parks included the South Downs. EU-funded countryside stewardship schemes were set up for farmers, resulting in a reversal in the decline of many species under threat. Animal protection was improved by the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Air, river and beach pollution was dramatically reduced following EU legislation, which also saw recycling rates increase from 15% to 37%. Labour set a target of 75% of new housing to be built on brownfield sites. Planning and building laws improved the efficiency of new buildings. In 2006 the government set an ambitious plan that all new homes built after 2016 would be zero carbon.

The Climate Change Act of 2008 set in law the commitment to reduce emissions by 80% from 1990 to 2050. This was the worlds first legally binding climate change act. A third of economic growth since 2011 has been in green sectors. Labour set targets for 30% of electricity to be renewable by 2050, and committed energy companies to put a smart meter in every home by 2050.

Co-operation in Bevendean
Labour councillors, members and supporters have given their support to the Bevendean, which is being set up as a co-operative pub for the community. Its great to see the community come together to create something that will really answer a need, and a fantastic example of how a co-operative approach can give people more say, said Labour and Cooperative councillor for Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Leigh Farrow. In this difficult economic climate, many small businesses are struggling and pub closures have risen. Labour has campaigned for a statutory code regulating pubcos and making it easier for small landlords to operate.

Local hospital services are facing 30m of cuts and waiting lists are going up. Labour will protect the NHS so that it is always available for people in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven. Nancy says: Brighton Kemptown Conservative MP Simon Kirby needs to be held to account. He voted for this governments Health and Social Care Bill which has wasted a staggering 2billion on reorganising and privatising the NHS. How can this be justified when these cuts are being imposed? The royal Sussex County Hospital has already cut hearing services, it is proposed to transfer kidney services out of Brighton and sexual health services are also under threat. What this government has planned for the NHS is chilling. We only have to look at the cuts locally to see what a Tory government means for our NHS. Nancy Platts, supporting the community

Nancy went to the Woodingdean Carnival in June. She said: The carnival is a fabulous coming together of the local community and it raises vital funds for local groups and organisations. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and watching all the wonderful displays. Nancy spends a lot of time out on the doorstep meeting people to find out more about their issues and concerns. The rising cost of childcare came up time and time again on the doorstep in Queens Park. I will be campaigning for quality, affordable childcare for all, she said.

Nancy marched with thousands of others at Brighton Pride, commenting: For me, Pride is a celebration of our progress towards equality but also a reminder that more still needs to be done, both in the UK and around the world.

The Government have just announced a 4.1% rise in rail fares from 1st January 2014. This makes the cost of travelling by rail even more expensive when so many Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven people are already feeling a real squeeze in their incomes. Nancy wants to see affordable rail fares within a network which is publicly owned and run solely for the benefit of passengers instead of competing companies.
