Moreover, institutions do not bring us warmth and intimacy. An example is the military. Once we enter the military, we are required to follow its rules and the orders of our commanding officers. We will be punished if we do not do so, and it does not matter whether the commanding officers know us personally or not. Also, there is division of labor in the military; the military is divided horizontally and vertically. The military is usually divided vertically into three branches: the air force, the army, and the navy. And in each of these branches, it is divided horizontally. Each branch has its set of generals, lieutenants, privates, et cetera. Although division of labor can make the military more efficient since each branch and level has its own specialized tasks to do, division of labor also separates us from others in the military. We, who are of different ranks, will not form intimate and close relations with others within the military because we have our own duties and responsibilities to fulfill. We are required to focus on doing these duties and responsibilities, and to act professionally and objectively. However, when we are off duty, we may mingle with each other as friends and be intimate and close with each other since we are outside of the military institution and its rules. Another example is the teacher-student relationship. Teachers are professionals, and they are bounded by their job to do what they ought to do. They teach students different subjects, give them assignments and exams, and give them grades. Students, on the other hand, listen to their teachers, do what their teachers ask them to do, and pass the subject. Teachers and students should be strictly teachers and students, respectively, when inside the classroom. Teachers should not be biased just because their students are their friends outside of the classroom. There is no such thing as friendship between the student and the teacher when in class. The socius is divided and abstract, and because of this, we must look outside our work responsibilities and social duties to experience personal exchanges and real encounters. Military officials make friends inside, and outside their job but they are strictly professionals when at work. Teachers can become their students friends outside the classroom, too. This going outside the institution is when we find the warmth and intimacy that the socius fails to bring us. 2. A public order is needed to protect private life because each of us cannot protect our own private life if there is nothing or no institution that would stop others from violating it. An example of this is the court system and the right to property. Our Constitution states that people in the Philippines shall not be deprived of their right to property without due process of the law (Art. III, Sec. 1) and their property shall not be taken for public use without just compensation (Art. III, Sec. 9). People can use their property as they see fit without interference from the government. However, the government may take away their property only if it paid the people just compensation and if there is due process of the law. Furthermore, Congress shall pass laws regarding the interactions between persons with respect to property rights. For example, trespassing is a criminal

offense. An effective, powerful and impartial court system is needed so that these constitutional provisions and laws can effectively protect the rights of people. Without this court system, there would be no one or no institution that would impartially judge cases regarding property rights. If there would be no institution that would judge these types of cases, then other people or the government may decide to trespass on the peoples property or deprive them of their property. The people, whose property was trespassed or deprived, may then resort to vigilante justice just to protect it. The people and their families, therefore, cannot live a comfortable life because society would be filled with violence and disorder if a court system, which is responsible for protecting the people from the arbitrary actions of the government and other people, does not exist. Therefore, there is no private life unless protected by public order.
