THE CANONIZATION OF SAINT CLARE Steps toward the canonization of Saint Clare were begun by Innocent IV on October 18,

1253, with the Bull "Gloriosus Deus." There is an original manuscript at the Proto-Monastery of Santa Chiara. Other texts of this Bull available are the following:

The process of canonization began in the cloister of San Damiano on November 24, 1253, extending to the city on November 29th. Studies of the reports of miracles followed until her canonization on August 15, 1255. The earliest known text of the Process is an Umbrian version from the late 14th or early 15th century. This was discovered by Lazzeri at the Chiara Novella Monastery in 1920 and published for the first time in the following:

Lazzeri's concordance is available in Latin and Spanish in the following work:

The first English translation of the Canonization Process was made available in the following:

De Robeck, Nesta. The Cause of Canonization. St. Clare of Assisi. Milwaukee: Bruce Publishing Co., 1951; Chicago: Franciscan Herald Press, 1986: 179-230.
However, this version omitted a section from the account on Clare's dream of Francis. Brady noted this in the book he edited.

Bull of Canonization The Bull of Canonization is the Papal document declaring Clare's canonization by Alexander IV. Copies in the Papal Chancery bear dates which vary between August and October of 1255, but the contents have little variation. This text is found in the work of the above mentioned :

Armstrong 176 - 83. Brady 105 - 10. Fiege 178 - 85. Locatelli 270 - 9. Locatelli Paolucci 230-6. Omaechevarria 115 - 27. Vorreux 229 - 37.
The following article is a study of the literary qualities of the Bull of Canonization:

Scaramuzzi, Diomede. Il pi autorevole panegirico di Santa Chiara d'Assisi." L'Osservatore Romano 19 mar. 1953.
The approbation of Clare's canonization was unanimous. We have the text of one prelate, Frederick Visconti (+1277) Archbishop of Pisa:

Lazzeri, Zephrynus, O.F.M. "Consilium Frederici Vicecomitis Archiepiscopi Pisani ut ad canonizationem S. Clarae deveniatur, et eiusdem canonizationis die." Archivum Franciscanum Historicum 11 (1918): 275-9. Vorreux 256 - 57.

Other aspects of the canonization, such as indulgences granted in her honor, are noted in the following:

Casolini, Fausta. "In agosto MCCLV: Chiara d'Assisi glorificata in Anagni dal pontefice Alessandro IV." Chiara d'Assisi 3 (1955): 7-24. Pratesi, Riccardo, O.F.M. "Come Alessandro IV onor Santa Chiara."Chiara d'Assisi 3 (1955): 25-8.
There are sections of the Process that have been particularly studied, like the following: On Clare's dream of Francis:

Clare's devotion to the Five Wounds of Jesus. While Clare lay dying, she encouraged her sisters to pray. Sister Agnes, witness 10 in the Process, mentioned that she prayed a Prayer in honor of the Five Wounds of Jesus aloud, while Clare moved her lips softly. This appears to be the occasion which prompted the belief that Clare composed a prayer to the Five Wounds.

The attack by Saracens and liberation of the City. June 22nd has been set aside by the people of Assisi to commemorate what is called "The Vow of St. Clare" -- her victory over the Saracens. The Process gives details of those attacks on the convent and city. The following articles describe these events and celebrations:
