THE CANONIZATION OF SAINT CLARE Steps toward the canonization of Saint Clare were begun by Innocent IV on October 18,

1253, with the Bull "Gloriosus Deus." There is an original manuscript at the Proto-Monastery of Santa Chiara. Other texts of this Bull available are the following:

The process of canonization began in the cloister of San Damiano on November 24, 1253, extending to the city on November 29th. Studies of the reports of miracles followed until her canonization on August 15, 1255. The earliest known text of the Process is an Umbrian version from the late 14th or early 15th century. This was discovered by Lazzeri at the Chiara Novella Monastery in 1920 and published for the first time in the following:

Bull of Canonization The Bull of Canonization is the Papal document declaring Clare's canonization by Alexander IV. Copies in the Papal Chancery bear dates which vary between August and October of 1255, but the contents have little variation. This text is found in the work of the above mentioned :

Clare's devotion to the Five Wounds of Jesus. While Clare lay dying, she encouraged her sisters to pray. Sister Agnes, witness 10 in the Process, mentioned that she prayed a Prayer in honor of the Five Wounds of Jesus aloud, while Clare moved her lips softly. This appears to be the occasion which prompted the belief that Clare composed a prayer to the Five Wounds.

The attack by Saracens and liberation of the City. June 22nd has been set aside by the people of Assisi to commemorate what is called "The Vow of St. Clare" -- her victory over the Saracens. On the Christmas vision. Both the Process and Legend recount the Christmas night when Clare was too ill to join the sisters for the Matins.

Clare, Patroness of television One of the three witnesses who spoke of Clare hearing the Christmas celebrations at the Cathedral of St. Francis, added that she had also seen the Christ Child in the crib. This was the reasoning for which Pius XII proclaimed her Patroness of television.
