VI Sem I & C Engineering Examinations 2012 Process Instrumentation and Control (ICE 312)
Time 3 Hrs ] (26-05-2012) Answer any Five full questions. 1(A) Define a loop and explain the block diagram of a control loop defines all basic elements. (2+8=10) (B) A control valve has a linear variation of opening as the input voltage varies from 0 to (08) 10V. A microcomputer outputs an 8bit word to control the valve opening using 8 bit DAC to generate the valve voltage. a. Find the reference voltage to obtain a full open valve (10V). b. Find the percentage of valve opening for a 1bit change in the input word. (C) Write a dissipation constant equation for RTD. (02) 2(A) Prove that three types of control valves open differently as a function of wall stem position. (B) Explain a two position controller with neutral zone made from op amps and a comparator. A magnetic amplifier requires a 5 to 10 V input signal from a 4 to 20 mA control signal. 3(A) Design a signal conversion system to provide this relationship. (B) Alcohol is pumped through a pipe of 10cm diameter at 2m/s flow velocity. Find the volume flow rate. (C) Define the proportional band and explain the proportional band of a proportional controller depends on the inverse of the gain. 4(A) Design an error detector using a ground based current and a differential amplifier. (10) (10) [Max. Marks: 100

(B) Explain the split range control of a pressure in a steam header with N number of boiler. (10) (C) Define a quality of the control system. (02) 5(A) A liquid level control system linearly converts a displacement of 2 to3 m into a 4-to (08) 20mA control signal. A relay serves as the two position to open or close an inlet valve. The relay closes at 12 mA and opens at 10 mA. Find (a) the relation between displacement level and current and (b) the neutral zone or displacement gap in meters. (B) Explain the implementation of pneumatic proportional mode controller with the help of a (8+4=12) diagram and write the output pressure equation also. 6(A) Describe the reverse acting pneumatic actuator. (04) (B) Explain in detail about non-interacting and interacting tanks in series. (09) (C) An integral controller is used for speed control with a set point of 12rpm within a range (07) of 10 to15rpm. The controller output is 22% initially. The constant KI = -0.15% controller output per second per percentage error. If the speed jumps to 13.5 rpm, calculate the controller output after 2s for a constant ep
